you can create a material from any jpeg using the create material button found on the materials pallet (looks like a little striped box with a plus sign) images can be found all over the net just search for textures (most of these are for rendering software but the tiling and such are the same)

could anyone tell me why, in the image below, some edges have assumed the material's color, some remained black and some turned white (without any interference from me)?[image: HkB5_samematerial.png] EDIT: one thing that i noticed is that if you set the edge colors to by material before you do anything in a model then it is easy to control them. all of them come in black as you model but when you change a line's color the others remain black.

hi, in Sketchup import --> click the 'Options' button; this allows you to set the units for import. If an ACAD drawing is drawn in 'inches', Sketchup will import to correct scale even if you've set your import units to 'Meter'. However, if your ACAD drawing is drawn in 'unitless', then Sketchup will take 1 unit in ACAD drawing as whatever unit you've selected. Hope this helps.

Hi Rob, I see your point exactly. Sometimes there are things that would make a model (or anything for that matter) really perfect - it's just not worth the effort (time, money) investing into. And your contribution is certainly most welcome!

I am not too sure about Mac's but if you share the SU folder and all it's sub folders in XP the guest account can access it without any problems.

Hi daigoro, There are several applications which allow you to do this (in different ways). RPS 3D PDF which is not free but the most cross platform tool. It will - as it says create 3D PDF files which you can then orbit etc. Hypercosm - which has a free and a commercial version as well. Not available for Macintosh at the moment - and needs a (downloadable) plugin to see the models. eDrawings - but it only works on IE (and I'm not sure if it is embeddable in a website) See some discussions in the respective subforums about them here.

Thanks for that. I noticed some of the textures that do display on my PC do have embedded Exif properties. Curiouser and curiouser. Incidentally, I have noticed writing the file from PhotoShop using "File> save for web" stripes out most of the embedded data including exif data. The file size has dopped from 3.7 meg to 400 k which is worth having. Smiley

It might also be worth experimenting with the sandbox tools, especially the 'create mesh form contours' tool as it can do quite a good job of getting a good starting mesh which you can then elaborate on.

Toggling "display section plane" off and hiding it are different but they actually give you the same "result" in a short run. The combined use of hiding / selecting active planes (cuts) can create nice effects ("moving" section planes etc.)

Yes, you should add dimensions manually. You can, however, print to scale - when dimensions are not needed that much (since you can get the dimensions by measuring things on the printout). At least maybe not all dimensions are needed that much.

Remember that when you use PushPull to pull or push the wall to the new required width, simply double clicking the PP tool on other surfaces after will give you the same wall width again. It will speed things up a lot for something like this.

Oh and by the way, thanks for the work on my Star. My intent is to carve that into a piece of furniture, but I wanted to see how it looked first. Thanks a lot from Houston, Tx. Dad Kel

I think that the empty PNG has to be bigger than 10 x 10 pixels for it to work. I once noticed that a 2 x 2 PNG made by myself didn't work, but a bigger one from the forum (by Alan Fraser, if I remember right) worked perfectly. I cannot say where the limit is. The 99% trick is a good workaround Anssi

Thank you everyone for helping me. The problem is now solved. The model I exported had a lot of Dimensions visible. When i removed the visibility of this layer an exported, all measures in AutoCad was equal with the model from skethup. All the answers you have given me has been a learning process for me. So thank you again everyone. This Forum is perfect for me as a beginner of using SketcUp.

@jean lemire said: I took the liberty of using your model to start. Jean, I'm honored. And that it a very clever trick! I never would have thought of using the move tool. Thanks.
