Someone suggested Maxwell render above. I have never used it so you may try their free version. What I was able to start rendering at least fairly acceptable results was Twilight Render (which actually uses Kerkythea's rendering engine built into SU and running inside SU). Its interface is simple and intuitive enough even for a beginner at rendering. It has a free trial version with limitations: no export to Kerkythea, size limited to 800 pixels and some watermarks in the corners. But they also offer academic licenses for both educators and students: http://www.twilightrender.com/buy-top/86 (full price would be $99). The fun part of Twilight is that it can render special SketchUp animations like SketchyPhysics. In any case, you can start with the trial version here and see if it fits your needs. Keep in mind however that any of the renderers will always benefit from more powerful computers. Twilight only uses CPU but of course, the faster your CPU is or the more cores/threads it can render with, the faster your images will be. Another option could be LightUp which also has some trial version although I am not sure what the limitations exactly are: http://www.light-up.co.uk/index.php?t=download They also have academic license: http://www.light-up.co.uk/index.php?t=student The cool thing in LughtUp is that once you render your scene in SketchUp, you can interactively walk about that scene and even export it into a standalone player (or publish the walkabout scene on the web). I am sure kids would love this (and to how off to their parents/friends, too). So there are many possibilities to get them acquainted with. Christmas is coming - maybe a license of some of these lesser expensive apps is affordable for some families. @adorno said: The recommended system requirements fo Lumion are very high though: OS: Windows 7 64-bit System memory: At least 6GB Graphics card: NVidia 460GTX / ATI 5850 or faster, with at least 1GB memory True that since it's a GPU based engine,it needs a stronger machine. I use it on a 3.5 year old, 32 bit XP though (i.e. max memory usage is less than 4Gb) with an 1 Gb nvidia 9600 GT which was not a top notch card even when I bought my PC. (I know, time to upgrade...)

Groups and components are ways to separate entities from the adjacent ones. Have you been at it for 10 hours? Take a break!

I managed to forget about Maxwell Render. There is a free version for Sketchup--it operates as a direct plugin which incorporates the renderer right into SU. The free version of Maxwell is limited to a render resolution of 800x800, and there are some other limitations as compared to the full, licensed Maxwell.

It's never been the point of SketchUp to be complicated by its own photo-realistic rendering tool. There's plenty of alternatives such as the plugins like Podium and LightUp as well as all the rendering programs out there such as Thea, Kerkythea and so on. You have plenty of choice without making SketchUp more complex.

Success! I recreated the material from scratch. For anyone having the same issue, I edited the texture image, changing it from 300x300 pixels to 512x512, and I saved it under a new name. I then rebuilt the material using the new name also. It has started rendering again. Now if I could just solve the issue of the model's geometry not caching. That was the reason I did the 'select all+copy+paste-in-new+save-as-new' trick last night. It has not helped. I may head over to the Podium official forum and see if I can get some ideas. Thank you again, Solo!!

Actually all you have to do is go into 3D warehouse and you will see the plugin for products. CLick on it and it will show you all the different manufactures that are part of this plugin. Also, most are DC.... thanks for your input.... eccowboy

Open the Materials Browser / Editor... Create a new material [click the '+' button]. Give it a logical name. This is to use one of your specific texture files. Tick the 'use texture' box and navigate to the texture-file [jpg, png etc]. Add that image-file as the material's 'texture'. Adjust the size of that texture as you desire [break the 'chain' symbol if you don't want 'proportional' resizing - aka 'distortion']. Adjust the material's 'color' [as used when no textures are being displayed]. Adjust its 'opacity' [aka transparency!]. If you want a texture to 'tile' nicely - that is, to repeat across a larger face without noticeable patterns showing up where one part ends and the next one starts - you must either get a 'tile-able' image in the first place, or make it into one - there are several tutorials around on how to do this with Photoshop/Gimp etc... If you have a material in the model that you would like to 'export' individually, select its icon in the model-pane of the Materials Browser, right-click context-menu and 'Save As' to put it [as a SKM file] into a folder within the Materials folder [either an existing folder or one you create] - then it'll become available in all other models - just like the standard materials shipped with Sketchup. When you have a collection of materials in the model that you would like to 'export' en mass then click the right-facing arrow on the side of the Browser and the pop-out menu includes 'Save collection as...' - this saves all materials in the model into a specified folder [you can make a new folder as you do this if desired]... Again the SKM materials in that folder become available to all models thereafter...
  • Easy way to apply a face to autocad import?

My favorite workflow for importing cad files is as follows. I export from cad in controlled chunks. Meaning I export the topo first, then the sitework like sidewalks, parking lots, etc. I import those separate portions into SketchUp and deal with them one by one. I first run Todd Burch's "Make Faces". This goes through and makes faces of all the linework that it can find. It often leaves lots of faces unclosed, typically because the linework does not import from cad cleanly enough. So, to clean up the linework, I like to use "Stray Lines". It might be a little tedious, but once you get the hang of it, it goes by quickly. This script label every line the does not connect to another line. Typically those are lines that connect in autocad, but lose their connection in SketchUp. It is then a matter of going around and either connecting each line that is labeled, or deleting the tiny line segment if it slightly longer than needed. Then I rerun makefaces. And then anything that still won't turn into a face, I being troubleshooting by drawing lines across the surface where the face should be. Eventually it will start closing in some places, some places will not close. Keep doing that until you can find exactly where the troubled line is that is keeping the face from closing. Then fix it. And then once I get that done, I begin to import the next portion of my cad work. Smustard does have some great tools that speed up that process. One is close opens, the other is delete short lines. Both of those can be very useful for automating the process I go through in the step where I label all stray lines. Those two scripts will delete all tiny edges that typically are not needed, or will auto-extend a line if it is a short distance from another edge and appears like it should just be a closed line. Anyhow, good luck! Chris

@pbacot said: You'll want to give those thickness with Joint Push-Pull ruby or Perhaps shell ruby. thanks pbacot, I tried joint/push pull but it left little wedges in between each surface. But I plan to layout each 1/4" cut for the laser cutter in Revit so it'll be fine for it's purpose then I'll be able to get each layer's shape. Thanks for the tips! Lorne

I tend to use http://www.last.fm You can search for an artist or genre etc and it will give you a bunch of similar stuff. Works well to keep you floating in a comfortably numb way but allows you to find new music that fits your mood. No real need for most users to log in.
