Yeah I had lots of lego as a kid still a huge crate of it in the loft. It as hard work to put it together but I thought the end result (the exploded view) was fantastic! It came out much better than I had pictured in my head. This small go kart project was only a prelude to the larger one I am currently attempting. Sort of a trial run to see how it could be achieved. The presentation style was the trick I use for illustrating my SU models, http://liam887.wordpress.com/tutorials/ however there is also a podium render blended it to give the reflections of the pieces on the semi reflective surface.

You have issue with emitter material? It uses surface normal for the direction, so make sure you have no back faces (or you can enable emitter to cast light to back side too (KT Material Editor>Self Luminance). Need a example scene for further analysis. btw It maybe slower in KT forum, but I never seen such quality in render like now. There many active users and I dare to say, you will get help faster there. Only need to define you problem accurately and perhaps provide a example scene. Please, continue this at KT forums, if it's still a issue.

Yeah I noticed the xml file for kerk was 131MB where as the 3ds was 59MB, the original SU file was 32MB. Its obvious different formats and exporters triangulate the model differently.

@hellnbak said: Just found this thread (because of the previous post). Very nice work I love detailed models, and this certainly qualifies. Did you ever get around to adding the textures? I just got around to seeing the movie a couple of months ago, loved it. Unfortunately I watched it at home, no hi-def or 3D, so I undoubtedly missed a lot, but still it was a very good movie. Someday I'll move up to whatever century we are now in. Maybe. Probably not Well I went away from that design and went for a Navy version of the one from the movie, you can see it in this thread: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=333&t=18543&start=285 As I was making so many things that are on going I put everything in one thread rather than having multiple open ones, Sometimes I may work on 4-5 models at one time so no point cluttering up the forum. Wow thats a year old, just noticed!!

As a rul - I never change the current layer to other than layer0. That way I ensure that when I draw lines and faces they are all on layer0. And then I change the layer of groups/components on a per instance basis.

no, but look closely to that ''surface operations'' toolbar. It's not part of the row, it's acting like a dialog box. I can move it around. That's how mac treats it. go to view -> toolbars and choose the toolbar you want to see. I'm pretty sure that sketchup will open a toolbar that's a dialog box. Try that. edit: just read your post again, so ignore the post above. Then again, you can rearrange the toolbars so that it looks like the windows version, even though it doesn't stick. For that double-up thing, I'm sure mac has a large tool set. Go to view -> toolbars -> large tool set. I think the large toolset doubles up

As you can see here I wanted the ground to be reflective but when I have shadows turned on I get a big shadow on the ground below even when i uncheck the box to say I dont want shadows on the ground or faces, however when I light the scene using the sun there are no ground shadows? Wonder if its a glitch or im going around it the wrong way. Anyway another model another render. [image: x0g3_20090821223237_6m4s.jpg]
