    • RE: Visibility and invisibilty from camera

thanks guys, works well to contain my lighting inside and keeps the light outside from coming in (which usually washes out the colors). But Since my camera is facing a high gloss back painted glass, it has to reflect the opposite side, which is now just plain white. What if there are columns, wall arts and accesories?

It can be 2 sided material in vray or just a face with 2 materials applied on front and back side, one being full transparent and one opaque.

Impressive indeed. Reminds me of the good old days, visuals are done by hand without help from computers...Those were really exciting times... It set the true artists apart from the rest.

    • Visibility and invisibilty from camera

Im just wondering how i can make objects invisible from my camera and have its reflection visible in the render. Do we have it in Vray for SU?

Here's what I have. In a small room,my camera is pushed out of the room to cover the whole scene I want to show. It is facing a very glossy surface. I need the wall to be hidden from camera so my view can penetrate it but this wall's reflection be visible in the glossy material.

If I hide the object from SU itself, then it will not be also be visible in the refection.

if not possible?, Any known workaround ?

    • RE: Does VRay V1.6 beta work with SketchUp 2013

so far working for me.. The new enhancements are quitr good ! I had a little glitch though rendering old models with materials done in vray 1.49. But If I start from scratch or, kind of redo the materials. It proves to be faster.

I think my trouble is more with sketchup 2013 than vray. the rendering part is smooth but I had bugsplat after bugsplat in the modeling part. which I think has nothing to do with vray.

It's a gamble for you to install Vray 1.6 on SU 2013. YOu may acquire a license for SU 2013, but keep the vRAY 1.6 beta on your more stable SU like v8.

Unfortunately, you cannot keep 2 copies of vray for 2 SU versions.

AND if you did have to give your SKP models to 3rd parties... and your were of a devious disposition... then you might use 'save_as' into a v8 [or even v7] SKP - taking it back when there was no restriction on 'commercial use' - and now the there is no objection or [probable] 'traceability' of the original SKP version in that copy...

Im thinking that Trimble might soon disable the ability to save in lower versions (free versions) especially if new functionalities are introduced in future updates. This will then give the Pro subscribers advantage over the SU free users. -another way of making free versions obsolete.

Not that I dont want to subscribe to pro for my own personal freelance work, but until I see a difference in functionality in the SUv8 and SU2013 (apart from the import export formats, and Layout which I dont use at all) I wouldnt mind going back to my SU v8 with the useful 3rd party plugins Ive always been using.

Then I will uninstall SU 2013 altogether if my conscience has to hunt me about the terms and condition I agreed with.

somebody said.. "If you use it for profit", then its commercial. Can somebody tell if anyone of us here use sketchhup strictly ,solely for play or hobby. Why pursue something if it cant be "of profit".

Even hobbies, when excellently done can fall into the hand of a businessman and trade it for profit.

I guess, its not much of what uses one has for it, but who uses it. I mean If I am a person whose career is related to industries like architecture , interiors design, engineering, 3d production and such, (even though I don't have registered company name at all), Then I should only be using "PRO version" Is that it?

    • VRAY is VRAY!!

Ive heard this several times.. Vray is vray! . Meaning, in whatever platform youre using it, Engine is the same and supposed to yield same results, or at least has the capacity to give same result as the best vray available in other packages. In many forums, the conclusion has always been. "depends on the artist". How true is that?

Can we say at this point VFSU 1.6 (with the addition of new features including materials enhancement, dome light and proxies)is "equally good" as Vray for Max , Maya, Rhino.
as far as capabilities is concerned...and that limitations will be dependent upon SU itself.

The reason for asking this is that 3DS max, being the industry standard (in my industry),I still envy the works of the finest Vray - max artists.

Does it really have to be native? What about DAle's plugin that let you use propeller UV mapping/unwrapping tools? Tools one use in other applications as well.

Thom, are you talking about SketchUV which you can import to Roadkill? Tried it but cant make roadkill to work.

I still believe, basic UV mapping tools should be native and If I am going to pay $500 +, I could probably demand for something like unwrapping tool. If Roadkill can be distributed free, why cant Trimble give away similar tool even just for Pro users?

    • What exactly does " FOR NON-COMMERCIAL USE ONLY" mean?

Just finished my first 8 hrs for SKP 2013. Had to agree with the terms.

But what exactly is the meaning of β€œ Non- commercial use only” . I am a freelance designer, I've been designing interiors using the free software since version 6.

If I make 3d models or renderings as a freelance for somebody who use it for their business- not necessarily for design , but for building it. – Am I breaking the terms.

If I continue to use version 8 free, then I wont be liable. Isnt it? Then why don't I use both for their intended use. Version 8 free for commercial, then version 2013 for non commercial?

What If I take models from the warehouse (which is supposed to be free) and use them for my freelance projects. Am I liable?

It is the output that will be evaluated here. What difference does, sketchup 2013 and sketchup 8 free has in terms of β€œoutput” .If it is rendered rasterized image, who could tell whether it is made in latest or earlier versions?

Still Im wishing there will be a native tool for unwrapping texture. This is where SKP is left behind by other 3d packages.

    • RE: Sketchup 2013 issues

I had bugsplat after bugsplat after bugsplat just using roundcorners plugin.

Copy- paste from skp 2013 to version 8 is not possible.

I feel that the icons in version 8 looks better than 2013

The right click for turning on and off plugins is really handy but icons don't stay in place after restart.

      Have you tried QuadFace Tools?
      http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39442

Yes, and it was oh so good to work with pseudo quads. But any subdivision applied to models could triangulate which becomes too complex to modify.

I guess until you release your much anticipated "bezier surface" which could subdivide πŸ˜‰ and maintain the quads (is that how it is precisely?) , then working with organic stuff is still not as smooth as other quad based platforms..

Guess, Im too excited, downloaded new Sketchup 2013, installed vray 1.6 beta (which was released just a few days ago to see if it will better perform here. So far running well, πŸ‘ but whether it will help vray to go faster or not, I still have to see after few more tests. I hope theres no crashing on the use of vray proxy.

We brought the V-Ray Material from 3D Studio Max over to VfS (no you can't use a .mat file, we just brought the functionality of the material over to VfS), and I've heard reports of improved performance when using it. I would really recommend posting about this on the Chaos Group forums, so that Fernando can give you some tips about how to optimize the scene for 1.6.

Yes I saw it... Its becoming more like Max. More buttons to tweak, check uncheck, roll down menus. But Is a standard Material not Vray Material?? (Until 1.49 I believe it was called standard vray material , isn't it?)

If a Vray material could render faster, Is there a one click command to convert my standard material to "Vray Material" with BRDF properties and all?
