Keep in mind that SU arcs are imported into ACAD / Bricscad as a series of short straight lines & not arcs. Seasdes

@Brodie This is within the vray materials editor - things like reflection and emissive layers, etc. It would save time to be able to copy these layers from one material to another.

Hi Doug and welcome! I would first draw the profile of the leg and lthe it with the follow me tool. Then draw two, vertical faces and intersect the whole model with them. Clean up unwanted geometry, orient remaining faces consistently and done. See a very quick solution (go through the scenes) attached. TableLeg.skp

Hi folks. A possible workaround to keep the resolution at its maximum (not loose anything from the original picture) would be to use some image editor to cut the original image in chunks of 1024 x 1024 (or 2048 x 2048 if possible). After that, you can import all the chunk one by one in SketchUp and reassemble the picture. Just ideas.

Make that rectangle into a component which glues to "any" face (and cuts a hole, too, to avoid Z-fighting). Make sure to set the component axes so that the red and green axes are lying on the face. Now whenever you pull one from the component browser, it will try to self-align itself to any face you snap it to. You may still rotate the component on the face but that should not be an issue. See attached file. CompGlue.skp

thanks for chiming in. I was beginning to wonder if it was just off the beaten path enough that nobody had tried it or bought into it. it seemed like a worthwhile experiment to me. its also seems normal to stick with the basic set up if its working for you. but I"m glad some have tried it. I think I will. for me, I end being a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none. My SU time is intermittent, but when on board, I can be doing full time for a week so any help seemed to make sense. Thanks, GREG

Thanks again, during the weekend I had a chance to work on my model and truly appreciated the Cleanup plugin which helped me more than once to save the day. The above video is great too - now I know that SU layers are not "real" layers at all Thank you for your time.

like Tig said, do they really need pro features all day? if they do... like export and layout3 and such, then you'll need the network license. and three seats... but once you buy it... don't expect them to be in any hurry to e-mail you the codes... I still haven't gotten my SU8 Pro I ordered 4 days ago.

@unknownuser said: ........I hid the section plane to export a clear image as to not have the gray haze over everything. I saved the file with the section plane hidden. When I open it back up I am unable to unhide the section plane...... Whenever you get in a situation that you can't find something in your model, then turn ON: all geometry (SU's menu View > check 'Hidden Geometry') all layers (SU's menu Window > Layers > check all layers) all section planes (SU's menu View > check 'Section Planes') Now your entire model should is visible (guides not yet included!) As you can see, section planescan be hidden + on an invisible layer+ turned OFF. This may make them hard to find. To also display guides and guide points, see View > check 'Guides'.

Nick, This is a good place for that discussion....ive been part of many good SU to Max discussions on the SU forum...I didnt intend for my comments to make you feel like a noob or that they were out of place. I approached it more as a wholistic process in which you would need max as an essential part of your work flow and I can only relate that way because thats how it is with me....I use it so much that I was forced into learning about how it worked and that made working between the two programs a whole lot easier.

This is C&P from The Help files on Layers. Emphasis is mine. @unknownuser said: First things first: by default, a SketchUp model has one layer, Layer 0 (zero), which is the base layer. You can't delete or rename Layer 0, and you should always draw your individual entities on Layer 0 and leave them there. @unknownuser said: Important note: Groups and components are also entities, and, just like with individual entities, you control their layer properties in the Entity Info dialog box. To try to keep things clear, this article refers to individual entities (things like edges and faces) versus groups and components. To try to make things even clearer, since groups and components behave the same with respect to layers, only groups are mentioned from now on in this article. Finally, the idea of drawing individual entities on Layer 0 and leaving them there is so important that this article doesn't even address the option of associating other layers with individual entities. If you want to experiment with that, you'll need to take along your own search and rescue team! @unknownuser said: Be happy! Always draw your entities on Layer 0 and leave them there. (Did we say that already?)

Othoap, As a woodworker who drew by hand for more than 20 years, I can testify that what Chris Fuller say's is abosolutely dead on. "Stop thinking about shapes as primitives that must be manipulated through dialog windows and think about shapes as objects made up of lines, as if you were drawing them with a pencil. Its a bit of a mindset shift coming into SU from most other modelers." Sketchup was the first program I tried that drew the way is most natural to me. Is it perfect? No. But it's a super program that after using for 18 months I'm still learning new things every day. And I could not have done it without the help of the good folks on this forum. Always get quick and in my case patient walking through of whatever problem I've had. If you're using it professionally, become proficient at the basics before you run into a deadline, or you'll surly become dishearted at the program. The # of tutorials out there coupled with plugins make Sketchup a winner in my book.

got two more e-mails today... both identical, with my key info... @unknownuser said: "Hi Kristoff, Thanks for contacting Google SketchUp. We regret to hear you never received your license information via email. Our records show that your license was sent out automatically following your purchase. Please note that the license information template we send out contains executable links to our product download and may be getting flagged as spam by your internet service provider. Below is the license information again without the links. We recommend adding our email address domain of @sketchup.com to your white list to ensure you receive future emails from the SketchUp team." yeah I knew that it may be flagged as spam, but I actively and daily check my spam folders because lots of things I want go in there... and it never came. what irks me is they had a specific box to declare an e-mail addy that I wanted the license info sent to along with whatever addy they had on file... and I filled it in. I expect more from Google, they're too big to make these little mistakes. thanks for listening to me vent. so anyway... all is well in my world and I'm now SketchUp 8 Pro... now I'll be hitting a couple of Plugin Developer's donation boxes to complete my Christmas support of the modeling world.
