They don't have to be in C:\Users\Bob\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2018\SketchUp but assets should be stored locally. Did you add the component folders you have to your Favorites in the Components window?

Evermotion models usually come in the following formats: MAX C4D OBJ FBX, with several flavors of Max files, not just for Vray (scanline, mental ray, etc) and you only download the ones you want when you want. I would go ahead and buy the Evermotion set, then download a demos of the Simlab importer plugins for sketchup - obj importer, fbx, etc. and see which ones works best for your workflow. The $100 or so for the Simlab plugins are definitely worth it if you plan to use often and want to build a library of skp objects from high quality Max models. They are fast and do a good job if you use them correctly. Again, install demos of various Simlab importers for Sketchup, then try importing different file formats to Sketchup to see which works best for you. (if you don't want to purchase Evermotion set yet, then you can try downloading free assets of various formats.) Also, the general work-around for doing 'real' 3D work without having a 3DS Max license is using Blender. There will be a slight learning curve, but you can open files, layout UVs and export to different formats.

Pro users should be receiving update emails in the next day or so. But, if you want to upgrade now, you can check your license status here: https://www.sketchup.com/license/renew Then you can download the new version of 2018 on the website and plug in your license info: https://www.sketchup.com/download/all

Blue is everything in your context, white with blue highlights shows the parent groups back up to world, red is everything matching the search term in the "filter" box [image: I89u_outliner.PNG]

By logic, if everything is a component or group ("shape" doesn't describe anything) and you have only one edge left, it doesn't belong to anything else. What is 2 and 3? One problem you might have is if your friend drew anything on other layers. All edges, arcs, cicles etc. should be drawn on Layer0 in fact Layer0 should always be the active layer. You can check this by editing the components and select different edges to see what layer they are on. There's a plugin (should be built-in) called "default layer geometry" which moves all selected geometry (edges faces etc) to Layer0. It's very useful. It leaves components on the layer they are currently on and it operates on geometry both outside and within components (you don't have to edit or "open" the components to make it work). I would usually run it on files I get from others. you have a line in the Outliner?

Hate to bring this back up but I'm at wits end trying to get SU18 to work with my SM. I've tried copying the files as suggested and upgraded the driver today to 10.5, which 3DC claims to support SU18. I'm now getting following error msg when starting SU18. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I originally wrote this around the release of SU2017. It's still the method I use. 1. Custom shortcuts: Those get picked up by the new version of SU so that's automatic. 2. Custom materials, styles, components: Those folders from the beginning get put in a place I can quickly access with Open or Create a local collection and Add to favorites. (I never add my own custom materials, styles, or components to SketchUp's own supplied asset folders. They always go in folders I create.) 3. Custom templates: I just save out a blank SketchUp file from the previous version to somewhere I can access quickly. Open that in the new version and use File>Save as template. 4. Extensions/Plugins: I always install fresh copies from their source. This helps to eliminate potential problems due to changes in Ruby or other things that might cause old extensions to fail or throw errors. For me it isn't worth the trouble dealing with the errors if I know I can head them off in the first place. It also gives me an opportunity to do some house cleaning and skip plugins./extensions I don't use anyway. With the Sketchucation Plugin Store tool, it's easy to batch install bundles at least for files available there. The EW also makes it easy to automatically install files. 5. Toolbars: I make a screen shot of the current version showing the toolbars I have active and where they are along with the custom toolbars for the native tools. I import that image into the new SketchUp version as an image and use Zoom Extents to make it fill the drawing space. Then I don't need to look back and forth between SU versions to make sure I have things where I need them.

If you get them directly in SketchUp, they will open with the version you are using as long as it is 2014 or higher. If you are downloading them directly through your browser, you'll have to choose the version you want. [image: 6Bpt_Screenshot-1_8_20184_26_18AM.png]

I recall an inconsistency based on the cameras relationship to the axis... not sure if this is the same as it was many years ago... my 'memory' tells me I avoided this by moving geometry and camera so you never crossed the axis... it seemed that if any camera position included a negative, SU makes a decision whether to move clock or anti clockwise... and it's not always the same decision... does that make any sense? john

It's odd that the model axes are different in each scene.I wonder what you are doing that makes that happen.I'd love to see your workflow in more detail.

What sort of trouble are you encountering? One or both objects would disappear, or there would be lots of imperfections (missing faces) in the resulting structure.

Well, I bought Sonder's book and had the Brightman one. Got to say, from a personal preference Sonder does work to a more design freedom approach. Brighton's is great, don't get me wrong, but the processes laid down I just felt difficult to maintain in those first creative stages where you are bursting with ideas and just want to get something done quickly. I think Nick Sonder has that at the core of his approach, that ultimately the more freedom you have, the better you'll design, which is why he avoids plugins that add complexity or lots of layers – he is striving to keep the workflow simple so that you design better. Glad I got both, I feel I am well on my way with my SU journey, even though I am making plenty of mistakes, I am starting to be able to produce some nice work already.
