Well that explains the sensation I felt when SU shut down... or was that my vibrating chair? Either that or I pushed the surface into infinity. And we all know how SU reacts to large numbers

Hi Nick, Note that you can exploit the inference engine to do the job for you. After grabbing the right grip of the scale tool, you can snap to any corner of your ground floor group. See attached images. [image: 7XXl_step1.jpg] [image: ly3l_step2.jpg] Note however that unless your second floor is not just a hollow box (i.e. no wall thickness, no windows, furniture etc) it will scale everything proportionally and everything will be "distorted" in this way of scaling.

Hi Mark, As I wrote in my previous post, there are so many repetitive elements (vaults, wall sections etc) in your model that the use of components would really enhance your modeling workflow. Then you could put them on different layers and only work with the parts shown while keeping the rest of the model hidden. Another thing is that you have quite a lot of back (blue) faces in the model - these should be reversed (select a bunch of them, then right click any of them and select "reverse faces" from the context menu). I think that to work "inside" the building, you could use section planes successfully.

You may also want to make a group out of the property box. This way you can move things around that you place on it, without affecting the property itself.

I think it is an accepted practice among renderers to adjust the shadows so they help present the design. That was the same for hand-constructed perspectives as it is today with computer-generated. The goal typically is to make the design look as perfect as possible. Your typical rendering isn't considered, at least by those making them, as a "shadow study". I think most people making renderings do not consider such idealizations to be unethical. (They would likely agree it is unethical to labelled the rendering "July 4th" if the shadows are based on March 2nd). Other rendering 'enhancements' relate to the reflectivity of the glass, not illustrating power poles, wires, garbage dumpsters, the reality of the huge parking lot, etc. Presenting a real shadow study at a public meeting can be the curse of death to almost any project. People live much of their lives in shadow without even realizing it or having any concern. Yet when they see an animated shadow study, of the kind you can do with a SketchUp model, they get very concerned. Overly concerned in my opinion. The shadow study is presenting information they aren't used to seeing and are unable to evaluate objectively. Neighbours arrive at the public meeting thinking they have to protect themselves from being affected by the proposed project. Seeing that a shadow may fall on the sidewalk in front of the building can be enough to trigger the "you see? It will impact on me - I walk there everyday" even though their own property development is doing exactly the same thing. Once they perceive "it affects me negatively" there is little hope that you can convince them to support the project as self-interest and resistance to change are powerful forces. Unfortunately, in the real world, protecting self-interest trumps fairness. Regards, Ross

Just did a quick test comparing the file size of 100 individually grouped cubes and 100 copied component cubes, and surprisingly the component cube file was slightly bigger. I imagine this is only really true for quite simple geometry, and that when you strat getting more complex components the advantage (file size wise) will become apparent.

I've had this happen sometimes, I think it's something to do with pasting groups or comps from another file with a different axis. But if you explode the group or comp then regroup it fixes itself. baz. here an example: [image: YMT9_Clipboard01.png]

first guess: try to switch "transparency quality" in the style window (edit tab > face settings) from "faster" to "nicer". second quess: if you have grouped your fence and outside of it is another face in the same position, SketchUp may get confused which face to display. if that is the case, just delete the additional face. could you post your model? would be interesting to have a look at it...
