      Hi πŸ˜„

I'm just starting to learn SketchUp, but have some problems. When I use the Select tool to drag a selection box, I can't see a box. I can select things this way, but it's hard to see exactly where I'm selecting without a box. I have a new Student Pro version - I don't remember this being a problem with the free downloadable programme. Do you think there is a problem with the software?

Also - I can't Orbit using my mouse. I hold down the central scroll button and move the mouse but nothing happens. I can zoon with my scroll button. Again, perhaps a software/hardware issue or am I missing something?

ALSO (sorry) - if I try to make my SketchUp window small (using the top right middle button on my window), my window doesn't minimise, my toolbars remain, but my drawing completely disappears. Is this a SketchUp issue?

Sorry to arrive with so many questions and such a long post but I've been tearing my hair out trying to fix them for weeks. I've re-installed my software numerous times from my HD, but am wondering whether I should go back to my software supplier.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bex

        Hi Bex and welcome.

I don't know if this is caused by some hardware (could you describe your configuration, BTW?) but it MAY be some vide driver issue.

If you go to Window > Preferences > OpenGL settings and try turning things on/off there and experience any changes in the behaviour of SU, it may be an indication of it. In this case make sure you have the most recent video driver installed.

Also, if this doesn't help, your SU installer file may be corrupt - download it again and try to install that (did you buy it from a reseller?).

Hi Gaieus - thanks for such a speedy response and......

I tried changing the GL settings and deselected the 'use hardware acceleration' option and it FIXED both the selection box problem and the minimising problem!

Thanks you SOOOOO much!!! You're a star!

Didn't sort my mouse orbiting thing, but hey, thats a minor inconvenience. My cursor now seems to line up with thing so much better when selecting and erasing. Beforehand it was very hard to get in the right place.

BTW - I'm not quite sure what my configuration is or what a vide driver issue is. Sorry - I'm not the most computer savvy person around. I've got a Toshiba Satellite P205 Laptop 1.73GHz 1014 MB with a 32 bit operating system. Is that even close to what you were asking?! Sorry to be to dense.

Well, if turning off hardware acceleration seems to solve the problem, it is only a sign that there is some problem with your video card / driver. Thatshould be fixed (you didn't specify that). Some laptops have integrated video cards and that is far not an ideal configuration for SU.

With acceleration off, your SU will be slower especially with larger / more complex models. And on the other hand, I think I would be stumped without the middle mouse orbit tool! 😲

              Bex,

I looked your machine type up, and most likely it has an Intel integrated video chip, so it is unlikely you can run it with hardware acceleration. An Nvidia card is an expensive option, but you might remember ordering it.

Your mouse might have the scroll wheel button set up to do something else than act as a middle (or third)button. You should be able to change it in your Mouse control panel. If you have a Logitech mouse, and have the Logitech software installed, you can also try uninstalling that and running your mouse with the standard autodetected Windows mouse driver.

Hi Anssi, thanks so much for you input πŸ˜„

I really appreciate the info on my laptop Intel video chip - I had no idea. I'll struggle along for now without the hardware acceleration and see how I go - I'm still only learning the programme so am not into the realms of complicated models at the moment. Eventually maybe I'll look into the Nvidia card option. Thank you for that.

As for the mouse, it's a Nikkai Plug and Play little mouse. I've tried playing with the settings in the control panel, but haven't managed to make any difference so far. I'll have another go though because the mouse orbit would be very useful - as Gaieus noted.

GAIEUS - thanks again for your help. Shame it was quite as simple as I first thought. It's so frustrating trying to deal with these issues when I don't really understand the computer! 😳 Thanks for your patience.

Thank you both you very helpful people πŸ˜„ Bex

Hey Bex, why do you think we set up this "Newbie Forum"? It says: "Welcome! Ask and get answered..." πŸ˜‰
