@martinph said: This afternoon I purchased and installed the new VRAY after having used the demo of the old version to great satisfaction, and without any problems. I have attempted to make several renders, using simple default settings. However, each and every time SU shuts down completely a few minutes after the start of the render process, and I get a bugsplat message. Have I just wasted $800...!!?? I noticed that after installing the new VRAY a number of pop-ups flash by very quickly when SU starts (way too fast to read them, you can just see the outline of the window before it disappears again). Are there known issues with this new edition of VRAY, or am I just having bas luck? I do hope there is a way to solve this! (P4, dual core, 2.133 Ghz, 4 GB ram, Nvidia Geforce LE videocard) I also had this experience with the new demo version. Su started slow and the GUI of the V-Ray responded very slow and caused SU's freezing! I uninstalled it completely to get my SU back in shape! Nice render, but the GUI is very crowded and too uncomfortable.

@tomot said: Why is there a Vray sub-forum at SketchUcation. There was a growing number of V-Ray questions appearing in the forum, so it was decided to make a sub-forum to group them.

Window->Preferences->Extensions->V-Ray for SketchUp, the version number should be listed along with other plugin info below the list of extensions.

@unknownuser said: Through this topic I wish to support those forum members who do their renderings in Artlantis. I think if you would start like that, and offered your help we would be a lot less jumpy. Better yet, search for posts were people ask advice related to sketchup and artlantis. I like Artlantis and used to do a lot of work in it, but still your posts were screaming "Look at me, I am a salesman".

The Dirt map is also nice. can i ask what the Dirt Map is and how i can use it? http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150SP1/vraydirt_params.htm http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150SP1/examples_vraydirt.htm

@frv said: I can't seem to make any light to work, for instance the rectangular light can be edited but the effect is none, no light. When you use Physical Camera the light usually needs to be bumped up. Exactly what value will depend on what light unit you are using. @frv said: were is the low priority setting for rendering as is mentioned in the manual I asked about this yesterday. It's missing from the new version. Hopefully they'll add it soon in a patch. But there has been no promise. @frv said: there is a difference, and sometimes big in the manual and the actual OSX plugin. I assume this is due to the newer version. Yes - things have changed and the old manual will not always be relevant. For reference to how V-Ray works you can use the V-Ray manual: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150SP1/ @frv said: Is there a quick guide to good architecturel glass. I think there should be bundled example material with VfSU. In general you got two ways around it, if you use glass with thickness you can add refraction, and effects such as glass colour and make it frosted. But it does need thick faces. Faster way, if the effects are not needed is to use a single face with to refraction, and only use reflection. In both cases the diffuse should be 100% transparent. Use a Fresnel reflection map, in the default values the parallel value is comletely black, I like to add a little to this so you always get a faint reflection. @frv said: is there a quick guide to speedyhigh quality archviz settings for exterior work under the phycical sky. Speed and Quality is hard. That needs to be tailored to each scene. No holy grale there I'm afraid. But my most common setup starts with Irradiance Map and Light Cache as IR is faster than DMC.

I would like to make a coment about the price of those renderings. Here where I live, in the most violent city in the planet, people working as a freelance make renderings at the price of $50 US dollars, and those renderings are posted on panoramic advetisings panles. The main reason is, the piracy, a lot of people never would buy or pay a dollar for a good model (trees, furnitures, sky), so they would never pay $1000 US dollars for a legal copy of a fine software. I meet someone in a forum of a NPR rendering software, and I knew some one who call him self freelance, and he uses a Illegal copy of the software, I don't understand how? after geting money from that software (because is a freelance) can't pay for a legal copy?. In most of the forums of rendering software, they allow every body to join, and there at the forums, people who uses ilegal copies, learn how to make good renderings, or found support from the other members at the forums. I don't understand why? Well these are my thoughts.

Upload the images to the forum directly. There is an "Upload Attachment" button right under the textbox when you post.

hetauma... its intersting that you mention that a copy paste operation seemed to sort out the problem... I have experienced a similar 'roughening effect' of a smoothed mesh with vray bitmap texture assigned to it using the copy paste (to a different sketchup file) function before. Would i be right in guessing that the surface which has tbe grass texture applied to it was in fact copied into the file from which you attempted to render the final image?... Are you still by any chance using vray 1.05.30?...If so, then this might point to a known bug in which texture info does not transfer across sketchup files too well... in my case for all intensive purposes the vray material properties and soften edge settigns were the same but one rendered smooth and the other rough... I hear this has been sorted out in the new version... let hope you are not using the new version when this is occuring... Dave

The latest public version is currently 1.48.89. While is has been a rebuild to make it OSX compatible it's never been refereed to as v2. @dverger said: http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?topic=2320.0 It works on 1.05 but not on 1.48 No - it's broken.

I am looking into this new technology at it has it's uses. I have read that it comes most useful in iternational competitions, where you have to render 20 to 40 versions of a big model in the same day. For a freelancer or a small firm, it comes handy when time is a problem: you upload, apply materials (and even scene props like trees cars and people) and launch the render. In little time you will have a very good looking render of the scene you uploaded. I read an inside interview on on of the creators of felix, and he said his clients are people like zaha hadid and norman foster

Set the smoothing angle you prefer (roughly the same as the soften smooth edges dialog in Sketchup) -- then hit recalculate. Best, Jason.

@martinph said: ..why didn't I see this before? Sigh... I'm seriously considering getting this anyway. Congratulation to you and your team Al! Thanks Martin. I just sent you a PM with a link to our Competitive Discounts page if that will help lower the pain you are suffering. We are adding some great features to the Beta test version this afternoon, such as lighting channels, which let you adjust the intensity of individual lights after the rendering is completed. Vue, is different as they do not call themselves a render solution, but rather 'Digital nature', which they do well. Only now are they looking into Archvis and creating aproduct for this industry.
