BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

@dsarchs said: You could also do a quick model in Blender [or similar] using the fluid simulator and import that into sketchup. Cheating, I suppose, but that's a specific thing that other programs are just much better at [and free, in the case of blender]. Use the right tool for the job. There's no such thing as cheating, only using the right tool for the right task.

"Add hideen layer" is an indispensible script for adding section cuts when multiple Scene/Page views exist. One of the most useful additions. Thanks Jim

Thanks for all the responses. Jakob's eraser and space key works perfectly! Thanks so much for the great tip! Even better if we can have bigger eraser for bigger area selection in future.

ahhh... i meant as a general approach, you do have to delete by hand, no matter how complex?

Thanks Jakob, I think you're right but I didn't realise I had to explode the 'parent' component... If this is the case, i think i would rather build the component to cut the external wall and just draw a rectangle at the intersection of the inner face of the wall and delete the face... that way if you need to remove the component, at least the out wall will re-build on deletion...

Well, at first I'm creating the city to be used in Google Earth. And it's all done using Sketchup. But at a later date, I'm eventually going to use the assets in a game engine. But that's pretty far ahead in time. During the work with Sketchup and Google Earth, some buildings will probably be repeated. But just a few since this is city that's evolved from scratch about a thousand years ago. Meaning that the buildings aren't even mathematical correct at all. So I thought I'd use a smart way of texturing to save memory and thus, increasing performance that way. That's why I'm tiling as many textures as possible. The models will be quite simplified and won't have a high polycount at all. At a later date, I'm going to take pictures of the buildings and use CrazyBump to create the bump-maps etc. I've already done some testing on this and the results is very nice indeed!

Updating what i found out, Versions 2, 3 and 4 runs ok after the evaluation in PC with Vista Premium Entering the serial_number only for there is no chance to enter the authorization code. 2 says it will work until...and then says nothing , but it works ¡ 3 and 4 says they will work for 335 minutes , but when done and got to 0 minutes, when re_opened they show again the same message and work ¡ So great. I am now running the three of them plus the 6 . Version 5 was not of my taste so i have not tested. I have found much more easier to deal with big topographical_cad plans in 4 than in 6. zooming, panning, drawing ,... it was not supposed to be like that but it is, and the power that 2 had is still missing .

set designer, You should note that SketchUp doesn't actually do curves. All circles, arcs, bezier curves, etc. are composed of straight-line entities. After import, you can select a curve and change the number of line segments, if you need a smoother 'curve.' (At least, that is usually reported as effective.) After selection, look in the 'Entity Info' dialog box, and therein change the number of segments. Taff

@jim said: As a work-around, you can create a rectangle anywhere - it does not need to be attached to your unfold geometry - and select it as the last unfold plane. Jim Yep, that what I do now and it does the job well and quite happy with the results. Thanks for the script Ken

Hi Billy, There are a couple of notes here (sorry but on this "craputer" at work in the office I cannot even get the current snapshot to be imported to SU so I cannot check every word now). Google used to "encourage" users to hide all edges in the model before uploading. Now AFAIK in the latest SU version it is automated so your imported CAD lineworkwill never show up. The snapshot and terrain images are never diplayed in GE so whatever you drape on them will not be displayed either (you can use Tom's workaround however). It seems to me that you are only working with the snapshot and not the (elevated) terrain. Notice that there are two extra layers in SU after importing the snapshot; the flat GE Snapshot which is the one you should start working on (and from your decription that is inded the case in your workflow) and which is turned on by default AND the GE Terrain which has the topography features (which you seem to be missing) and which is turned off by default. You should also adjust your model to the terrain (with different techniques since it is never 100% accurate). You can turn on this layer by clicking the checkbox right to it OR by using the "Toggle Terrain" button in the GE Toolbar.

Okay, Al, but it sounds like you do want all four section planes perpendicular to the ground plane. As far as our slight semantic mixup, you did say initially that you want to "add a section plane perpendicular to the current view." I think it's rather natural to think of the "current view" as whatever is on the screen; therefore, anything perpendicular to that would appear edge-on. ~Voder

I have to agree with Remus here. Adding too much drives up complexity and in the end costs. I just think there are some major "misses" from making Sketchup a real hit....UV tools and the shadow bug are the 2 biggest for me.

If you have multiple buildings, and want to move only one, couldn't you create a layer for each building. Using the "put in layer" plugin, put all the geometry for each building in its layer. Then, turn off all layers except the one for the building you want to move, select all the geometry in that layer and move it.

@sketch3d.de said: not "fast feedback" but the mentioned "hardware acceleration" (one above). I meant the I disabled the Hardware acceleration, which then ticks the Fast feedback and gave me a warning about it. No matter what I do I get a bugsplat. Personally I would prefer the black window problem with hardware acceleration on. I have an nVidia card but I just boot into Windows when doing SU, it doesn't bother me I was just saying what happened to me. I am not looking to fix it. I will just wait until SU7 and the release of the Linux version
