I have attached a 2 scene model, the first has a complete sphere with 2 other objects poking into it. The second is the result of: Double clicking the sphere to edit it Going "Edit -> Intersect -> Intersect with model" Deleting the 2 boxes Deleteing the faces no longer needed Adding the lines that completed the internal faces sphere-tut.skp

@damathecat said: I can't believe you fell for my "line"...... you are correct! But it does feel gooooood when I can figure something out for myself. Sometimes I will try for a least 90 seconds.......... Hey, where can I look to find out what all the boxes/*/pencils mean next to the posts??? And if one of my posts are answered is there a way for me to mark it as answered?? You can edit the original post and change the title, add to the front (Solved), that way when someone does a search in the future they see your question and that fact that the thread contains the answer. I "fell for it" because I know and have seen that sort of attitude in the past. One guy at work, who has since "moved on", gave the attitude that he knew exactly what he was doing... we are still finding stuff he scr*wed.

Yup, Al Hart of Render Plus Systems has a great pdf exporter. It can downloaded here: http://wiki.renderplus.com/index.php?title=RPS_3D_PDF And here's a page with samples of their pdf exporter: http://wiki.renderplus.com/index.php?title=RPS_3D_PDF_Full_Version_Samples Chris Fullmer

@lilleskut said: I just started playing around with sketchup and made a house with a gabled roof like here: http://www.et.byu.edu/groups/cmfac/fenn/CM210/notes/Roof%20Systems/roof%20types.jpg. What I want to achieve now is the following: make the roof to extend beyond the walls on all sides (overhanging) add equally spaced columns at the end of the roof on all four sides of the house. The columns should extend from the ground to the roof and connect to it smoothly. How do I do this? Another, general question I have is: "How do you create a set of objects equally spaced?" Is there a tutorial explaining this? Check this out. Aidan Chopra has a complete set of tuts on YouTube... everything you asked and more! http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sketchup&search=Search

Yeah, I opened up the file and noticed right away that the green axis was pointing up. So you can either just keep the blue up and keep working on it, or select everything and rotate it all. Either way, glad its working now for you, Chris

it's also sometimes necessary to make hidden lines visible when applying textures to odd or curved surfaces. You'll be painting smaller segments but if SU gets confused when painting on curves sometimes this is necessary. -Brodie

I think all experienced users draw with the axes always on. As they don't render, I can't think of any reason to turn them off...apart from the very exceptionl case of showing a client a walkthrough of the model. As Chris says, you are much mre likely to spot elementary mistakes if they are visible. For instance, we quite often get questions relating to a mysterious grey shadow hovering above the ground. If the newbie had had the axes on, it would have been immediately obvious that the model was set below the origin; and that the shadow was actually on the ground, as specified in the Shadow dialog box....and that it was the model that was too low, not the shadows that were too high.

Hi GTP, The best would be to group all your aquarium (once you deleted the top face) so that later you can't incidentally recreate it on one hand and also, when you fill it with what-nots, they won't stick to it. Select all the geometry of the aquarium > right click > choose "Make group" And welcome to the forums!

Hi Kristoffer, You need no script or anything to be able to make entries into the VCB. One suspicion however; don't click into it - just type as you model (see the typed numbers appear) and hit Enter. Your other question; there are no "native" SU tools to curve or bend eisting geometry - you'd rather create everything to have the final shape.

This is the response I got in the TopMod forums. Share it with you. Thanks for everything. @unknownuser said: Juan, TopMod does not have the ability to import non-manifold meshes, and Sketchup does not have the ability to export manifold meshes, so I'm afraid this conversion process is only one way. You can really only export from TopMod and import into Sketchup, but not the other way around. All of the meshes that TopMod generates are manifold , aka watertight. This means that there are no holes in the mesh. Here is that definition put another way: @unknownuser said: Quote: A Manifold mesh is a closed polygonal mesh where each vertex is surrounded by a 'fan' of triangles. This means there are no 'OPEN faces' or stray elements like edges or verticies. So if you were to fill a mesh generated by TopMod with water, no water would be able to escape, because there are no holes, or open faces. However, sketchup is a much more free form design tool, and it allows any kind of geometry, including dangling edges, holes in faces, multiple objects, etc... The "g mesh" command in the obj file from Sketchup is part of the OBJ specification for the file format, which allows OBJ files to have more than one mesh in them. TopMod only supports obj files with one manifold object in them. So in short, to get a mesh from Sketchup into TopMod, you will have to go through another more advanced program such as maya, which has some really great tools to convert non-manifold meshes into manifold meshes (fill the holes, fix dangling edges/vertices, etc...), and also to combine separate meshes. So if you have a file with 2 cubes in it in Sketchup, it may seem very simple to just export it as an OBJ file, and import it into TopMod, but you would really need to import that OBJ from Sketchup into Maya, combine the 2 meshes into one object (they still don't have to be touching eachother, but they need to be "combined", in the Polygons -> Combine menu in Maya), and then fix the non-manifold issues with the mesh (there is actually a great tutorial about this concept here: http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=157746). Then you can easily export the mesh from Maya as an OBJ and import it into TopMod. If you don't have access to Maya, there are some open source tools that can do the trick, but they are not as robust as Maya, and it may be more difficult. I suggest trying out Wings3D, it's a wonderful open source 3d modeling tool: http://www.wings3d.com/ here's a tutorial on fixing manifold issues: http://www.virtualritz.com/tutorials/us ... -topology/ Let me know if that makes sense. I can try explaining some of this in Spanish for you, but so many of the technical terms don't translate, I've always found it difficult to talk "3d" in Spanish. Anyways, please let me know if you need more help getting something to work, or if you want a mesh converted, send it to my email at dvmorris@gmail.com and I'll convert it in Maya for you and send it back... @remus said: Im not sure if this will work on a mac, but in windows it remembers the last location you saved to, so if you go file->save as it should initially show the last place you saved to. remus that's true on the Mac as well. But Mac also has in the SU Menu: "File/Open recent" that displays several recent files. If punter is not finding it there, something bad is happening. And no, this isn't common. You also have Spotlight on the Mac for easy searches, so it looks like some thing's going wrong. Hope you find them.

The approach Anssi explained is how most of us deal with the linework. Its nice to have very thin black lines, but not the the massively thick ones. So exporting extra large and then downsizing in Photoshop is a great tip. It makes for a much crisper export image. Hope your're getting somewhere on this, the model looks good. Chris
