Probably late but here is approach. Model from top down using the top's cruciform and follow me tool to establish staring roof profile, measure photos to get other lower dimensions. I could not get enough info from the pics to get a consistent set of dimensions and could not tell for them any thing about spouting and the lower edge over lap and the diagonal from the top of the " gambrel" comapred to photo. Thanks again, during the weekend I had a chance to work on my model and truly appreciated the Cleanup plugin which helped me more than once to save the day. The above video is great too - now I know that SU layers are not "real" layers at all Thank you for your time.

OK, I think I've figured out what was happening: I reset the workspace, and it returned to normal - briefly! It seems there must have been a space in the search box (which I didn't see, of course) which selected only the objects that had a space in the name. Still, what is the logic behind white on white text (if that's what it is) or disappearing the text of objects that are within the search criteria? This is extremely bizarre and unhelpful behaviour. If anyone understands the rationale behind this, I'd love to hear it.

thanks for chiming in. I was beginning to wonder if it was just off the beaten path enough that nobody had tried it or bought into it. it seemed like a worthwhile experiment to me. its also seems normal to stick with the basic set up if its working for you. but I"m glad some have tried it. I think I will. for me, I end being a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none. My SU time is intermittent, but when on board, I can be doing full time for a week so any help seemed to make sense. Thanks, GREG

@wo3dan said: You can import different file types (*.jpg *.png etc.) in various ways, i.e. as image, as texture on an existing face and as ‘New Matched Photo’. The latter to re-create 3D shapes (like buildings) from a flat photo with the right perspective information in it.........On the same page you will find the Weld.rb ruby script, also very useful Wow, this is really useful stuff! I thought I'd seen all of the tutorial videos, but I guess there are some I haven't. Or maybe one just has to learn some things with time and experience -- like anything else. This information is very useful to me, Gerrit, and I thank you very much for your knowledge, and for taking the time to explain it to me! Things are buzzing along smoothly now, and I hope I won't have any other issues. But if I do, I will be sure to come back to ask! Gigi

I dont know if you can batch import inside Vue, but you can replace all the lo-res image files in the export folder with hi-res images...just make sure the new textures are the same format (replace JPG with JPG, or PNG with PNG) and named exactly the same. Then when you open the Vue file or open using the Python script, the textures will be changed. Edit: Make sure you COPY, not Drag and Drop your hi-res files into the export folder, or you will lose your original hi-res textures

Also you can do fine line work in Adobe illustrator or PhotoShop and then import to sketchup.

Blender and SU are different animals. The loop select/create feature in Blender is definitely a great option but in SU it would create a lot of geometry. SU isn't something geared around topology and quads. If you trial the tgi plugin you'll see the impact these cross cut sections have when you adopt a Blender like workflow. Models file size grow rapidly as you increase the vertices. A small price to pay when you consider how intuitive SU is. Blender is truly an amazing app but it's got a big learning curve. There is a member here who absolutely rocks at Blender and his output has encouraged me to learn it. Currently dissecting the 'For Dummies' book and tutorials. But I wouldn't wish for SU to change anyway!

Also, by applying the materials in SU, you also assign UV mapping to them (how big the texture should be, what the orientation is should be etc.). This info is also needed for Kerky to work correctly if you are working with image based materials and not with pure colours.

Hi Doug and welcome! I would first draw the profile of the leg and lthe it with the follow me tool. Then draw two, vertical faces and intersect the whole model with them. Clean up unwanted geometry, orient remaining faces consistently and done. See a very quick solution (go through the scenes) attached. TableLeg.skp

like Tig said, do they really need pro features all day? if they do... like export and layout3 and such, then you'll need the network license. and three seats... but once you buy it... don't expect them to be in any hurry to e-mail you the codes... I still haven't gotten my SU8 Pro I ordered 4 days ago.

This is C&P from The Help files on Layers. Emphasis is mine. @unknownuser said: First things first: by default, a SketchUp model has one layer, Layer 0 (zero), which is the base layer. You can't delete or rename Layer 0, and you should always draw your individual entities on Layer 0 and leave them there. @unknownuser said: Important note: Groups and components are also entities, and, just like with individual entities, you control their layer properties in the Entity Info dialog box. To try to keep things clear, this article refers to individual entities (things like edges and faces) versus groups and components. To try to make things even clearer, since groups and components behave the same with respect to layers, only groups are mentioned from now on in this article. Finally, the idea of drawing individual entities on Layer 0 and leaving them there is so important that this article doesn't even address the option of associating other layers with individual entities. If you want to experiment with that, you'll need to take along your own search and rescue team! @unknownuser said: Be happy! Always draw your entities on Layer 0 and leave them there. (Did we say that already?)
