Why don't you post the pictures on this forum so people can see what you may need, and answer accordingly. Many people are curious, and willing to help.

Indeed it's not perfectly rectangular and often one or more sides do not want to skin. You can alway intersect with some faces and then get it skin easier.

Yes, unfortunately all of the UV tools available for SU tend to do this, because when push comes to shove SU doesn't really have any real UV system. Gai's suggestion is good if you want to stick with SU...but it may reult in some fairly large maps. Alternateively, you could wait until it's in Max to map it...or if that's too tricky try something like Ultimate Unwrap 3D, which is much easier to use, pretty cheap and has the added bonus of being able to export the resulting mesh in a dizzying number of formats.

It is actually possible to colour lines themselves...assuming you were happy to just use a single line for each string. You can do this in the Styles Browser. Dig your way through the tabs through In Model and Edit, then choose the Edges tab and change the setting from the default 'All same' (ie black) to 'By Material'. You can then colour them with the paint bucket, just like a surface. My preference would be (especially if you want to vary the thickness) to use either a 2D very long rectangle for each string, or use a triangle rather than a circle for the cross-section. In other words, make each string a very long prism. Paint each string the appropriate colour then smooth and hide its edges...so that the colour doesn't get drowned out by the black outline as you zoom away. You'll never notice that the string isn't round...and you'll save a heck of a lot of faces if you want to do anything fancy with them at the windings.

Another way... [considering you are making a physical model and 1mm is optimistic!] Is to use Slicer to make some formers across the 'horn' at say 25mm c/c. Cut these from ply and build a 'former' around a central spine. Add a roughly cut over-sized sheet to one face, temporarily tacked in place and then trimmed to match the 'former' on both of its edges. Repeat on an adjoining side scribing the abutting edge. Trim the other edge of this second side to the 'former'. Repeat for all four sides gluing the sides together - avoiding attaching it to the 'former' pieces. Remove the temporary tacking and take out the former - if the shape is very convoluted make the central spine removable [wedges?] and remove the 'slices' individually...

I have no idea about these things - I am just the guy who says hello here at the door. Best is to go down on the forum index and post in the developers forum. All the witchcraft is going on there.

Found a solution. Uninstall of sketchup needs to be more detailed than just dragging the app to the trash. Here's the link that explains the procedure in detail: http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=40937

@trogluddite said: ... I don't want to disable SU's internet access completely, as the warehouse is indeed very useful (brilliant examples to learn from), I just want to be able to search only my local HDD collections, or at least have them appear first in the search results. Anyone know if this is possible? I think you will find or have found that people here are more interested in making models for presentations rather than facilitating their use in work involving getting and assembling components and related data. I am one of the few interested in the latter. It seems you can alter the component browsers content by changing file preferences [image: YyKE_SUprefs.png], but it also seems you need to also use this [image: p8EZ_collection.png] from the browser itself. Saved as a template all new skps will access this set of components first ... I think. What I want to do is collect components from specialist sources like yours if it made commercial sense via the Web. If you or anyone else has ideas for that I'm all ears! Keep on trogging! PS just tried with a file link in localhost (website on local machine). With Chrome set to always open this type of file, it will automatically launch Sketchup and open the component - well it's a start!

Thanks guy's for the help much appreciate it!! Tig, I tried your suggestion first, I blew it up huge, tried that and that solved my problem. Thanks a lot, I didn't know about drawing things already to there size could cause problems like I had, being that it was such a small item. Now I just gotta figure how to get my tubbing in there and get that drop off/slope on each side of that tubing and I'm done. Thanks again! Mike

Bob, as I wrote in my previous post, the plugin appears in the context menu. It'll only be there if you right click on a component.

Sure, why not. Certainly the "render" is not native SU output though...
