i think the better way to go with sketchup would be sub-d modeling, instead of nurbs... maybe a combination of both like t-splines. But i think a clean polygonal model would be better for most of the sketchup users. But you're right, this is a thing that should definitely be improved in Sketchup and i really hope to see sub-d in sketchup's future...

ok, if we are talking about create and animate organic characters and so on, i totally agree with you.. blender is blender.. but if we are just talking of a coffee cup i think sketchup is good enough, you are right, maybe you need a couple of plugins of course, but at least you don't need to import/export/convert/learn blender..

http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=33448 But triangulation remains. Obj supports ngons, actually. Same ridiculous problem with newer blender builds. Though blender supports ngons (bmesh builds). Still the obj exporter converts them to tris. Zbrush is an app that does not support ngons. However, the importer will ask for the method to triangulate them, it even has a converter to quads as possible.

I was wondering when they'd starting using this type of maps. There's several other providers already out there. Even in Norway, a local provider has had it for a few years now: http://kart.finn.no/ It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for Google to produce data for my area - it's always taken quite a while before their product news reached this region.

@stefanq: thanks for the tip on nomers composition tutorial. I've learned a few things. I've noticed that there are a lot of tutorials for SU and other 3d modeling software that cover the basics like basic modeling, texturing light setup and rendering, but not a lot of good tutorials for more advanced things like compositing, material creation(accurate)and environment modeling. I just happened to notice that the reflection of a window on the curve of the piano suggests to me that the surface is curved in a spherical way? But of course, I have photographed plenty of visual anomalies and this could be one of those instances where the condition does not follow the expectation.

Hi Greetz, I would suggest Vue, which is the reference in term of software for landscape modelisation. There is an architectural bundle that might actually be interesting for you: You can check the following address: http://www.e-onsoftware.com/products/vue/vue_archi/complete/ However, if the render quality is not so important for you and you want instant results, lumion is a solution. Hope this helps.

Try the vray two-sided material. There's a tutorial about it too (floating around somewhere) Simple steps: 1.make your curtain material - (it should be opaque, but if you want it sheer, you can use translucency and maybe a texture map) 2. create a vray two-sided material (from the vray materials window - and make sure it's NOT the SKP two sided), set both front and back materials to your curtain material, check the box for force one-sided, and set your color to a light gray) 3. apply your material to your curtain. (I also apply the original material to an edge to make sure my material doesn't get purged.)

hi.. i know this is an old thread, but maybe i can get some help first of all, great renders.. my question is: i like Cinema 4D cause all of the reasons you mentioned, and i export models from sketchup in 3DS format, by material, as well All works great, but only 7 out of 10 materials get exported...... some materials export as a solid color and its not a C4D open file problem, its a sketchup export problem, because when i open the folder i exported the file to, some textures are not there... does this happen to you? can you export to 3DS with all textures? if so, how do you do it?

Hi Chriss, Thanx for the comment. No clipmap/bilboards. I only used 3d models for planting. I used the new proxy2 feature in vrayforC4D. It works ery well with cinema cloner objects and surface spread. Greetz Twan

marlinstudios.com has some samples for each of its collections. There are also a few on this site by an artist called fusebulb who has some for pay collections on TurboSquid http://www.sharecg.com/v/7521/Texture/High-resolution-bush-map-with-alpha-in-TGA-format I haven't tried these in 3D but I did use them to do a quick test image in Photoshop.
