RE: Rayscaper, My trip down the road to adjumacation.
Hey @Mike-Amos ,
Nice Renders!
Settings are lost betwwen sessions with Rayscaper which is a nuisance
Do you mean between opening and closing the Rayscaper window, or between opening and closing SketchUp? If it's the first, I can reproduce it and will provide a fix for the next release (which I plan to land this week).
Sometimes 20 minutes and others, like here, over two hours for the same settings and GPU render.
Those render times are too high, even for CPU rendering. From your images, I gather that for an 1891 x 1091 resolution, you are seeing:
- Picture 1: 2h10m10s
- Picture 2: 1h41m37s
Can you provide a screenshot of your render settings?

RE: RayScaper tryout
Hey @nlipovac
Rayscaper developer here. Thanks for trying out Rayscaper. Your post just made my day! I'm happy to hear you are enjoying it.
It does take some time to get going, especially if you used VRay, but it has a great web page with enough information to make it a painless tryout.
If you don't mind, can you elaborate on the biggest hurdles in getting you started? I want to make Rayscaper as painless as possible for new users.
What I miss is the stop/start button for rendering, and I did not like that the rendering settings are not saved, so every time I start Rayscaper it needs to be repeated.
Yes, I had a couple of requests for the start/stop button. I guess I should prioritize that as soon as possible.
I'm misunderstanding the part about saving settings. Everything you configure for your scene is saved when you save the SketchUp file. Are those settings not loaded again?
it will only get better with time.
It is still early days, so I'm working hard on improving it
.
That's a beautiful render. Please keep them coming! Do you mind if I use this one to showcase Rayscaper on social media? Marketing is not my strong point, so I take everything I can getCheers,

RE: RAYSCAPER NOT LOADING
Thanks for trying Rayscaper! Unfortunately, Rayscaper doesn’t work yet on Mac, only on Windows.
But seems like I should get going on that Mac version because there are a bunch of users interested in rendering on Mac.
Regards,

RE: Rayscaper New Releases
@sashapepperspray It's Great to hear you like it. This was not a deliberate change but a side effect of how the new GUI framework used in Rayscaper handles splash screens.
Cheers,

RE: Rayscaper - Keep window always on top
@ntxdave said in Rayscaper - Keep window always on top:
@pixelcruncher OK, somehow, I had not noticed the Reload button. However, there are times when I would like to pause and/or restart the render process. You might want to consider adding something like that.
Pause/resume is definitely on the roadmap.

@Mike-Amos said in Rayscaper New Releases:
Not so sure I agree with the concept of having a purpose built forum. There is a captive audience here of Sketchup users.
Investing in a sole purpose forum will distrract energy and as a one man band, leading to additional fatigue you do not need right now and possibly not ever..
I do think a forum will benefit Rayscaper users in the long term and the product's growth, but that's only once it reaches a critical mass of users. Right now, I'm not doing anything actively to grow the user base; I'm focused on improving the software.
@Mike-Amos, I am very aware that a forum can be a distraction. When I would have my own forum. On top of helping users (which is always my priority), I'm also maintaining forum software and dealing with moderation. Rayscaper is my side gig, and although I have an awesome employer who supports my side project, I still have to be cognizant of where I spend my time and energy. I want to get Rayscaper out of the beta stage and make it rock solid so that it can be showcased to more users.
Cheers,
Thomas -
RE: Rayscaper New Releases
@Mike-Amos I don't know what happened, but it should be fixed now. I uploaded version 0.9.27 beta to the extension store:
Can you check if you can upgrade to 0.9.27 beta?
Cheers,
Thomas -
RE: Rayscaper New Releases
Hey, Rayscaper friends!
Rayscaper 0.9.27 Beta is available in the SketchUcation store. Some fixes and improvements. As always, I recommend upgrading to the latest version.
What Changed?
Bug Fixes
- Fix the sheen tint control in the Disney material user interface.
- Fix a bug where Rayscaper fails to load material and light settings stored in *.skp files.
Help me build the community
I'm on Twitter (X) now: https://twitter.com/Rayscaper3d/ - Please follow the @Rayscaper3d that will help me grow the community and spread the word about Rayscaper!
If you like Rayscaper, please share your renders! This will help me showcase its capabilities to other potential users.
Happy Rendering!

@Mike-Amos it should be available, I will have a look in the morning it’s likely a mistake on my end.

RE: Rayscaper New Releases
I have shared several renders on the Rayscaper Learning-Practice thread. If you think any of them are worth posting somewhere, feel free. The ones I have shared so far are inspired by @majid and his book.
Thanks @ntxdave - which book by @majid are you referring to?
Again, I think it would be good (better IMO) if you started your own forum. Another idea might be to get Rich to set up a category on SketchUcation for Rendering and then a subcategory for Rayscaper (but that might bypass some SketchUp users).
At some point, that decision will be made. But right now, there's not that much interest in Rayscaper yet. However, having a Rayscaper forum might help attract users. I'm a programmer, so I always feel like improving the software, but at some point, I will have to step out of my comfort zone and start marketing it

RE: Rayscaper Learning-Practice
Hey @ntxdave ,
Good progress there!
To answer your questions:
I had to close down Rayscaper and then relaunch it because there is no way in Rayscaper (at least that I could find) to restart the render process. Suggest that you add a button (or some kind of link) that would restart the render process and take notice of any changes in the SketchUp model.
If this is about material modifications, they don't automatically propagate to Rayscaper. Only new material is converted to a Rayscaper material, and you can subsequently edit it there using more sophisticated, realistic material controls.
If you want to reset your material and load the settings from SketchUp, the Reload button is for you. This will pull the latest changes from SketchUp:
If you make changes to geometry, they should immediately propagate to Rayscaper. If not, that's a bug, and I'm always happy to receive reproducible steps for getting into this state. That helps me fix these kinds of bugs.
When I switch over to the SU model, the Rayscaper screen kind of disappears. I then had to "reopen" (probably not the correct term) screen but that is probably actually pretty normal. I would not want the Rayscaper render window to keep me from being able to go back to my SU screen view. So, not sure what to say about this.
Correct, Rayscaper goes to the back of the SketchUp window. I tried to implement it so that it always stayed on top of the SketchUp window in a previous version, but that was buggy, so I ripped it out and needed to revisit this part. For now, you can use this tip: https://community.sketchucation.com/topic/163907/rayscaper-keep-window-always-on-top

Rayscaper - Keep window always on top
This is a quick tip for those who want to keep the Rayscaper window always on top. You can do this with a nifty utility called Microsoft PowerToys.
- Install PowerToys.
- Bring the Rayscaper window to focus and hit
CTRL + WIN + T.
The window should have a colored border and stay on top. - To turn off this behavior, again, hit
CTRL + WIN + T
.
Will work for other windows as well, not just for Rayscaper

Looking forward to the car render!

RE: Rayscaper Learning-Practice
@ntxdave Thanks for confirming!
You can click the heart (
) again to unfavorite. The heart will become unfilled again, and the HDRI (or texture, or material) will be gone from your favorites tab.

RE: Rayscaper Learning-Practice
@ntxdave I released a new version: https://community.sketchucation.com/post/1609639. It should render now. Do you mind confirming that it works now for you?
Cheers,

RE: Rayscaper New Releases
Hey folks,
There was an issue with the previous release (0.9.25 Beta). Rayscaper would refuse to render and stay idle. This is fixed in version 0.9.26 Beta. You can get it from the plugin store.
-
RE: Rayscaper Learning-Practice
The render result not appearing is definitely a bug. Will post an update on that tomorrow. Sorry about that. Anyone else seeing the same issue?
On the HDRI image thumbnail, there’s a heart
️ icon in the top-left corner you can click to favorite an HDRI.

RE: Rayscaper Learning-Practice
@ntxdave can you post a screenschot of what you see when selecting a HDRI from the asset manager?
