If you got a bunch of them to do maybe you want to try a different tack. Use the Rectangle tool to draw a large face that is coplanar with your flattened geometry. Make the face larger than the map. Select it all and use Intersect Faces>With Selection. Then delete what you don't need. If the map is all flat, the faces should remain filled.

love the idea (as I can say), the renders are nice, like that they have some atmosphere and not attend to be hyper realistic, great to have some Maxwell colege

i briefly tried the blender tree maker before, but felt that it was kinda tideous to get good results. you don't really know what each slider actually does, and when you did find out, you forget 2 minutes later gonna watch the tutorials now, maybe stuff will become clear then

@trogluddite said: Fascinating - I thought I might watch a couple of minutes, "for a laugh", and ended up watching the whole thing right through. It shows well the coolest thing about Sketchup - 'brainstorming' the idea you can see in your head, and seeing how it can be turned into geometry that can become something practical (or not, and try another way!). Very neat design too - a real 21st century treehouse. And I guess from the part at the end, kind of 'folding' and modular, so quick and easy to move trees. I will sure buy one if you ever get them manufactured! wow, thanks. can't believe you watched the whole thing yeah, this was more of a brainstorming session. we have to hand in the designs in half a semester, so i guess a lot will change / evolve until then. it would be so cool if everyone here would record their work and publish a timelapse alongside the final renderings just imagine seing that for the stuff posted in the "best of sketchup" thread, for example

Just an acronym... cwd = Current Working Directory just as pwd = Print Working Directory Dir.pwd usually returns the Plugins folder... BUT some auto-loading scripts change the cwd to another folder, so you can never be certain - but here my guess proved right

interesting, those are glazed then. I am more familiar with the unglazed type. You might want to add a second reflection layer to give a deeper reflection. If you look at some of the car paint vismats (available in the download section at the chaosgroup site) those use a combination of reflection layers to give depth to the reflection. I couldn't tell you offhand which ones to look at. The increased subdivisions gives a cleaner rendering. With low subdivisions, the result is sometimes noisy.

Set up Styles and Scene-tabs to save view/layers/shadows per tab etc, also use Layers on/off to hide unnecessary things as you model. Work with shadows off and edge-detailing simplistic etc... The when you are ready to render switch on the 'presentation' tabs to see the shadows etc. No one models anything very complex with shadows 'on'... [unless you want to get angry!]

@thomthom said: SU uses only 1 core at any time - so that should not be an issue. i meant that SU and the vray renderer use the same thread ID. so the windows method of limiting cores won't do anything, if i want more perfomance for modeling in SU while rendering. f.ex: i set max cores to 3 of 4 for the SU cpu thread -> vray uses all 3 cores, SU can't use any.
