      This is an interesting thread! I have a Bambu that I use for Photoshop, but I've never thought to try it for Sketchup. Might not have the functionality to make it useful, but anyway, makes me think it's worth a try.

      I have a bamboo too but never used it in SketchUp more than 5 minutes. This thread gave me the idea to try it and I must say: it takes an hour to get used to but it works fine. The bamboo has 4 programmable buttons but the click sound annoyed me after a while so instead I use my keyboard shortcuts. The pen-button is configured to double click. I used the same pan and zoom shortcut in LayOut and that works fine as well.

      Bamboo area is 15 x 9 cm. I wonder if having a double area is better or not.

      Will try it for the next few days.

    • RE: Shadows as Hatches

      For perpendicular views I once did it like this:

      1. add a workplane http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=323%26amp;t=31204
      2. enable shadows
      3. visually trace the shadows with lines on the workplane
      4. use Jolran's 2d boolean / hatch faces to fill the shadow contour

      This process takes a bit time though just like your original method.

    • RE: Outliner

      @gerry mc said:

      I want to be able to change the order of my groups and components inside my outliner.

      The outliner is sorted in alphabetical order: 0-9, A-Z, a-z, components before groups (but if you name the component as well it sorts again).

      You can't sort it manually, it always sorts alphabetical. You can change the hierarchy by: 1) making subgroups -> move an object in the outliner to nest in another group
      2) changing it's name or first letter.

      You can see an example the way I use outliner all the time here: http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15%26amp;t=52954%26amp;hilit=+outliner#p481656

      @joelm3dm said:

      Ok, my current system ...
      Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.7 GHz, 4.0 ram, 32 bit, Nvidia geforce GTS 250, two monitors
      I use it for SU and some light-duty video editing and photoshopping.

      I had a similar setup a year ago and switched to a I5-3.4Ghz, 8 GB ram, GTX 560 Ti and 64 bit windows 7 and an SSD. With anything similar or better Sketchup works great.

      @joelm3dm said:

      Initially I was asking if there's already a sticky or page or post with hardware suggestions. Wouldn't that be a good idea? Of course, it would have to be updated often, but I think many people would use it. A page could list different setups: "Bare Minimum", "Good SketchUpping", "Good SU Plus Others", "Super Ideal"

      Could be great if it was maintained regularly. Maybe someone will feel up for it.

      Trimble was alerted to this long ago. I was one of the ones to report it to them. My understanding is that it was fixed in a maintenance release. I don't remember which maintenance release it was but I haven't run into it at least since the last one. Maybe you should check for updates first.

      Thanks for reporting the issue but for me the bug is still alive. My SketchUp is up to date, I'm on 13.0.4812.

      This bug really is a problem. What's the best place to report this issue to the SketchUp people at Trimble?

      Hello Joel,

      Could you describe your current desktop in more detail (cpu/mobo/gfx-card/etc)? Also, what kind of work do you intend to use it for? Makes it more easy for people to give advice.

      greetings, Max

      I think I may have found a solution (at least for the problem I experienced):

      disable 'redefine thumbnail on save' in 'model info - file'.
      Saving is instantly again in any display mode.

      @jiminy-billy-bob said:

      In Layers Panel, it is completely anonymous. I can't track a user in any way. I can't tell if the user has check in yesterday, or the day before, when he started using the plugin, who he is, how many devices he uses, etc.
      It's simply anonymous. How is this violating privacy?
      I am concerned about privacy, that's why I don't want a more accurate tool to track users.

      I'm sorry if you don't read disclaimers. But you should take care of warnings when using any tool, especially one you don't know.

      Hello Jiminy-billy-bob,

      I'm just fed up in general with third parties collecting bits and pieces of information of everyone's private life. Even if it just ends up in one big anonymous bin of data - it's still private data that is collected and if I could have it my way I would like to keep it private and use the plugin but be able to opt out.

      Greetings

    • RE: Statistics on plugin users

      Talking about gathering people's data on a whole different scale... last week three firms with in total 160 computer shops all over the Netherlands were exposed tracking smartphone mac addresses, wifi, Bluetooth and infrared data. They collected data of people entering their shops and of every passer by.

      Their response: we need this info for optimizing planning the amount of assistants in shops.

      I don't get why at no point no-one didn't think this was sneaky and not the way to go...

      @TIG

      My problem with handing over additional info in general is that privacy apparently is of no concern anymore to anyone. Firms, governments and some programmers apparently have no moral problem with collecting any data they can at any time. I really don't like this kind of thinking. If you need to know something for bug fixing or you are curious in general, just ask or start a poll but don't just take it and bury it in (lots of) disclaimers nobody reads anyway.

      I realize the PluginStore has to send some data about the plugins I use to its server and I don't have a problem with that because, I thought, it's only info about the plugin, SU version and I can choose when to start it.

      I started collecting since Aug 25, 2013. So you can only go up to that day.Let me know what you think, and if you want me to collect other data.

      I can understand why this might be very useful for your coding but in my opinion you should have mentioned in your very first post of your plugin you were going to do this.

      In my opinion: ask before you start collecting.

    • RE: Slow saving (SketchUp Pro 2013)

      In SU Pro 2013 I noticed the same problem while working on a small 2.5 Mb file with several textures in it.

      • While in 'shaded' mode and with 'shadows on or off' -> saving is instant on the SSD.
      • While in 'shaded with textures' mode and with 'shadows on' -> saving takes about 17 seconds
      • While in 'shaded with textures' mode but with 'shadows off' -> saving takes about 11 seconds

      So as long as I don't <cntrl>-S out of habit I'm fine but would be nice if this could be fixed.
