    • SkecthUp 2020.1 - anyone using it already?

      Just got an email from SU about 2020.M1. Also referring to a blog (see link).
      Looks like a few nice changes. Anyone already tried? Any Bugs / annoyances?

    • RE: Image Viewers For Windows

      I've been using Irfan view for 10+ years now I think. Fast, lightweight and it can do some basic stuff so you wont have to fire up Gimp (gamma, scaling, change file formats, etc). Don't forget to install the additional plugins for support for additional file formats.

      edit: spelling

      What I meant is that one part is OUTSIDE of the other part (by several levels), so it is necessary to re-open/enter the group I've just left.

      Using the outliner you can easily jump from one nested group into another without manually opening/closing groups or components.

      Nice render and nice structure. I remember seeing those when I was younger.
      Really like the style. Ever heard of 'Googie architecture'? It has an 'anything goes' spirit - really uplifting.

    • RE: Classic/perpetual licence option ending this year!

      Too bad but no real surprise here.

      The subscription business model is great for business but not for the users. Their argument 'we have to earn your trust every year' and 'make your wallet speak' is not valid and much weaker compared to the classic license. Not paying is no option to make any changes to your files (or you must convert all of them to V8). Long time users are hurt the most. Pisses me off every time the marketing use it.

      I will keep my Classic 20 and we'll see at any point if there's a big reason to buy a subscription 'Pro' as well.

      Anything specific in your case ?

      Strange, nothing specific (to me) although;

      • outliner is always open - was never a problem pre v20
      • the top part in the hierarchy is a component with axis at the origin
      • nested in this main component are many groups.

      Will keep an eye open next week for crashes and see if I notice a pattern.

      Anyone else has experienced crashes using the mirror plugin in V2020?

      Mirroring nested groups and/or components several times have caused a crash of SU (bugsplat screen). Sometimes it goes ok, sometimes not.

      Saving the file now before using the command. Pre 20 never had to do that.

      I appreciate the tip, but I'm not sure what you mean by "updating my classic license". I don't use the Pro version, just the make. So do I need to do something to ensure that I can continue to use 2015, or am I in danger of it becoming unusable at some point?

      If you're using Make, maybe switch to the last version 2017? At least download it (and keep the 2015 installer safe for future use if you want to keep using that one).

      Trimble won't deactivate old Makes but in theory a new future Windows version could potentially not be compatible with the 'old' 2015 SU. This is theory though - SU8 still can be installed fine if I'm not mistaken. Maybe when we're switching to 128 bit systems? (does that exist anyway?)

      Ok, so I'm still using 2015, and am pleased overall with it. I use very few plugins, do little architectural work, just basic SU stuff. Is there anything about any of the newer versions that might be of benefit to me?

      Maybe some speed improvements? Filled sections? Linestyles?
      You could have a look at the changelogs of the last few versions to see if you fancy anything.

      Just to be a bit more future proof, you could update your classic license now its still available. Some rumors say this will be the last year a classic license will be available but there are no official statements.

      Been running SU & LO 2020 for a few hours -> feels a bit snappy-er?!

      • A nice productivity enhancement (controlling styles & layers in LO)
      • Downside for me (using a Wacom) is the sensitivity of the Outliner. Selecting, re-ordering objects many times fails because the software switches to rename-mode for the object. have to adapt to that somehow. Would be nice if it would be possible to turn of the rename option for the Outliner altogether - always using the Entity info for that.

    • RE: SketchUp 2010 -> 2019

      Different workflows. Especially for architecture (and vr) i mainly use solids. Makes clean models, better representation of actual building elements and no problems with lighting in unreal engine and vr.

      I see no reason why fixing the algorithm should cause compatibility issues though - but there are more choices i dont onderstand.

      I dont see downvotes, you're at 0 neutral in my browser.

      @DaveR & @Andybot I agree its many small improvements and I wouldn't go back to v8 either.
      A decade ago I expected SketchUp would have improved much more now and especially that workarounds/annoyances (like temporary scaling small solids x1000 etc) would have been fixed already.

    • SketchUp 2010 -> 2019

      After seeing a few 'best X of the past decade' topics on the internet, I wonder; what strikes me looking back on using SketchUp the past decade?

      We went from SketchUp 8 to the current version. Many new and exciting possibilities by the plugin developers.
      But how about SketchUp itself? Did it improve much? Can work now be done more easy / efficient compared to 2010?
      I like you can name section planes, makes it more easy to select them in the Outliner. Also adding the filled section plane style was nice. Strange enough, I can't really think of anything else...

      What I can think of is that its really annoying you still have to use the same tricks / workarounds as a decade ago, wasting time day after day, just because some basic functions never have been fixed/improved; booleans, materials + UV, importing/working with large files, UI, layer management etc.

      I must be missing a few improvements. Anyone?

      Well I have finally got unreal engine to v4,23 but as yet the exporters will not install into sketchup at all. I have Twinmotion which is not a problem but the datasmith exporters will not. I have been trying the correct v4.23 exporters and they install to the pc just not sketchup.

      Strange problem - just to be sure; did you upgrade to the latest 4.23.1? Also, did you try the latest UnrealDatasmithSketchUpExporter? (4_23_E1)?

      Seems there was a problem with SketchUp & Datasmith in 4.23 at one point. No idea if its related. https://forums.unrealengine.com/unreal-engine/unreal-studio/1660788-sketchup-datasmith-re-import-after-upgrade-to-4-23

      The problem with unreal engine is the updating process, it's flawed. I tried updating to 4.23 and have nothing working now. A pain in the grass.

      True - when upgrading to a new version - all kinds of functionality can/will break due to changes/improvements to the engine. For this reason, gameDevs tend to stick to one version - even if its already several years old.

      Maybe I can help - whats the problem you're having? Been using UE since 2015 so I might have run into the same problem and know a solution.

    • RE: How unreal is unreal engine?

      UnrealEngine(UE) is amazing, the possibilities are endless and they keep growing every day.
      It has a (big) learning curve though.

      Some additional info;

      • The engine is in development all the time. The documentation is not up to date. Be prepared to Google and search on the forum a lot.
      • There are many tutorial videos on YouTube but the info might be wrong due to the first point.
      • SketchUp is not the best companion to UE. No good mapping tools, no multiple UV channels, no bones, no animations etc. A growing number of objects I pass through Blender nowadays.
      • TwinMotion was bought by Epic this year. It uses the UnrealEngine tech for the visuals. Epic at one point stated in the (near) future you would be able to import TwinMotion project files into UE. That would be really great - just make a quick setup in TwinMotion (using all the libraries) and unlock all functionality / more complex stuff in UE.
      • You can use UE for free IF you're using it for visualizing / simulating your own designs.
      • Its really fun!Switching to UE / VR helps a lot in the design process.

      ...An experienced SU user coudn't watch videos like this (see attached) without eye-bleeding. Workarounds everywhere, evetything done approximatly, painful input and manipulations....

      I think the same and more can be said about SketchUp by an experienced Blender user.
      Do note, those videos are a few years old. The latest 2.80 is a big improvement.

      I for one am glad I'm using Blender as well for some tasks. Today I had to import a dxf terrain of about 100k faces (I think). After several minutes already waiting for SU to respond, I started Blender and it imported the terrain in a few seconds. Was already cleaning and optimizing the terrain in Blender when SketchUp finally was ready. So finished the terrain in Blender and imported an optimized version into SU.

      As soon as a python plugin is made that would offer a similar inference system, I think modelling would be in Blender just as fast or faster.

      Blender though has no sections nor dimensions nor a LayOut alternative and I don't expect that to be anywhere on their roadmap.
