Absolutely stunning detail! One of my first jobs out of high school was as an old school mechanical drafter. Real paper and pencils. I was creating drawings right down to nuts and bolts and welds for very large heavy equipment. I really appreciate mechanical details. I often skip them in my SU models to keep the file size manageable. SU 2017 does not like large file sizes. Again, excellent work!

Thanks. D5 Render is pretty quick but there are some features it needs especially in materials since there is no naming of the textures involved and it's impossible to find in the D5 directory. They have an automated PBR function which works very well and the library is extensive. Any modifications to there materials though is difficult since you really don't know where to begin with their textures. I amassed a large library of my own with materials and landscape elements which far exceeds my productivity in architectural renderings.

Rich, It slows down rendering times and when you add a displacement map it will render slower. It wasn't terribly slow for these and I only did 100 passes with a Presto setting in Thea Render. Blender does have a lot of these features "out of the box" if not with a plug-in or Grasshopper. I got sidetracked late this spring when I was finally getting around to learn Blender using the well known doughnut tutorial by Blender Guru. I even got a small Inspiroy tablet for the brushes. Blender can seem a daunting at first given all the options that are available but of course that requires more focus on my part. Sketchup still seems a better option for straight ahead architectural work for now. That and my 23 year old Autocad ADT 3.3 that I'm still using for the bulk of my freelance work. Anything organic though and Blender would be the better option. Glad you like the shag carpet. Many a tiny screw or spring were lost in those even into the 1980s.

@dave r said: @khai said: ... all that to me is junk.... As a hobbyist using SketchUp 2017 Make (according to your forum profile), the change in the subscription price has no impact on you anyway. This is what I do. I have a dedicated computer for Sketchup Make 2017 because I've gotten so handy with it that I would hate to part with it. I get it that software maintenance is expensive, and an aging product like Sketchup is likely to fall down the priorities list for a company like Trimble. I looked at their financials page (linked on their website) https://investor.trimble.com/static-files/d848716e-e452-4d46-9606-ac7163a309c7. I'm not an expert, but it looks like they are raking in ~1.5B per quarter after expenses. But yes, the price they are asking for an updated version of Sketchup is too much for my little pocketses. If I was a bazillionnaire, I would buy Sketchup and open source it. I can only dream tho...

Your modeling skill is admirable, I never can imagine doing such modeling! Imperfection in texturing is a key point. The other key point is lighting. If I were you, I would try more decent lighting and preferably use an Image-based lighting technique. My preference is HDRI lighting as found that the direct light setting is really hard to control. Keep posting more renders from your astounding model!
