2 hints for zorro2: use with CTRL to slice all subgroubs and components use right click on section plane to slice with this plane ("Slice Model at Section") (so 15 minutes are too long )

Thanks for the quick replies. I wasn't aware of the bounding box centers and now that I go back to the model I see that the center of the object that I'm using to position is also the center of the bounding box - thus the difficulty I was having. Now, being aware of that feature, I can easily avoid it. Thanks again.

I finally got around to watching this tutorial. I'm only a quarter of the way through but so far I think it's an excellent overview. My rendering knowledge is spotty and inconsistent so I expect I'll come away with a much better grounding in V-Ray. I notice also that they've added a Twilight tutorial for those who are interested. Some comments on lynda.com for those who haven't used this service before (I'm not in any way affiliated - just a subscriber): lynda.com is a website that offers a very, very wide range of tutorials for many types of software. Subscription is $25/month and you can watch as many videos on as many subjects as you can cram into the month. They make it easy to unsubscribe. I think they expect you to subscribe and unsubcribe often depending on your needs. So a strong thumbs up for this one. Well worth the $25 and after the V-Ray video I think I'll have time to brush up on some of my modo skills, take a look at the Twilight video and maybe even scan through some of the SketchUp videos to see if there's anything new to me.

looks like "z-fighting" to me. (when more than one face is co-planar) Here's one thing you can try: "unglue" your image from the plane that you have it attached to. move the image forward away from the background plane by .5 mm (and move those floating boxes in front of the plane, yet another .5 mm -- sometimes the glass renders incorrectly too if you have it coplanar.) Thanks for the replies. I realize I've got to be systematic - set up some tests in SU and in Layout and work through all the advice in this thread, labeling everything as I go. I do wish it was more straightforward. I don't have to do anything to get a crisp print out of AutoCAD - it's not something I have to think about. I wish SketchUp was the same - hit print and get an acceptable result.

For me, too. Don1t worry. Those Google sites are so bloated; it will take a while till they updated everything (as it took almost a year to insert "Google" everywhere 6 ys ago)

Hi! I don't have AutoCAD, but i tested exporting files from Blender and importing them to SketchUp: 48 sides circle: .stl comes out as 24s, but Collada .dae comes out with 48 sides ! [image: o6mn_circleColladaDaeFromBlender.png]

You can be surprised just how powerful SU is when other tools are added to the equation. Blender/SU workflow is pretty quick once you get the hang of it. Michalizissou is a good example of someone using other apps to compliment SU. I've a video on YouTube showing mapping in UVLayout using Whaat's UV exporter.

I'm afraid that Time is something that I'm in desperate shortage of. I guess regulars around here has noticed that I've been less active in the V-Ray section, which is due to the time it takes to make a good reply. I've barely been able to keep in track with my plugins even lately... While I appreciate the praise, "guru" I am not. I just know enough to get me by with what I need. Nomeranda ...or however it's spelled... has been doing some nice tutorials, and he really knows his stuff. Keep an eye on his blog. (will see if I can dig up the link )

If you are copying and pasting between SU windows or loading components, that will often mess up materials (delete all the layers except diffuse) when working in vray. That is a bug currently.

I know that Fernando uses a sphere with a mirror material to help align HDRI images, so maybe its in there for that too. I dont like the Vray sphere because it is pretty low poly. When I need a sphere I use the 3D Shapes Tool plug-in which can be found on SketchUcation.

I finally got back to this work and started with the Catmull Clark advice. That made a tremendous difference - it made everything very crisp and clear, like taking gauze off the picture. Now I'm going to systematically try the other suggestions. I'll report back later but I wanted to stop in and say thanks - that was a real help.
