Another handy little trick is to right click->align view to the face you want to dimension, makes snapping the inference a lot easier with wonky geometry.

Hi Colt and welcome @sevex0 said: sorry for the noob question Come on, this is the "Newbie Department" so any question is "allowed" Just to explain how NOT obvious this "trick" with the arrow keys have always been; it was first initiated in the free version of SU 5 (so Pro users didn't have it that time and they "had to" use the good, old, Shift key to lock a movement - which of course you can still do and when it's out of an axis, you still need to do). Anyway, when it was finally introduced into both versions of SU 6, "old" pro users could still hardly get used to it sometimes (I remember really respected and experienced members - from whom I have learnt lots and lots about SU during the years - expressing this). So there are things that are not always obvious therefore watching a fast recording video and not getting what someone is exactly doing there is not something you (or as a matter of fact, any beginners around) should apologise for. Hey folks, you can take this as a kind of "encouragement" to post the seemingly most embarrassing "noob" questions!

Sure Red. I set up my scenes in SU to reflect typical layouts; Site Plan, Floor Plan, Elevations, Sections, etc... SketchUp Setup Each scene has layers that are specific to those scenes for such things as dimensions in plan. My Floor Plan scene is the only scene that has the layer DIMS-FloorPlan active, all others this layer is hidden and so on..... That way each scene has its own designated layers showing..... Layout Setup Another thing; my title sheet is just set up as follows: Title sheet linework - locked Title sheet text - locked and shared across all pages Title sheet Project text - unlocked so i can copy from one page to another and alter to suit Model import - I set up a layer called 'MODEL', it is located at the bottom of the layerset to ensure it is under all other linework [LO recognizes layers visually as they are sorted in the layer dialogue box] Text / Arrows have their own layer as do drawing symbols such as section syms, title syms, etc... I've also made a scrapbook file of the typical symbols I use for each job That's pretty much it.

Sure you can put those edges on separate layers, too (although it's typically not a very good idea to put elements of a certain group hierarchy onto different layers because if you are a messy person like me, you can easily end up confused). The reason for an ultimate hide for these edges is generally that you are really unlikely to need them (especially with nicely modelled foliage where image files of leaves and such are much more spectacular without edges). Even from a medium distance those condensed edges are very ugly looking. BTW the same "tip" goes for 3D Text. Make something and watch it from a certain distance without hiding the edges. It will soon become illegible.

I used to wonder why SU opened with Sang, and decided that it must have to do with initializing default conditions, and values. I once tried to customized opening SU with command files, special templates, and unique desktop icons, and had problems with drag and drop because of Sang, so now I use my system in the manner that SU intends.

SU is a Cad, not graphics program so (unless I am mistaken) you can not paste images from the clipboard into it. You can however import images into SU, and use them in various ways. Goto File > Import, and pull down the "Files of Type" menu to see the formats supported.

The floor is contained within a component and then a group. The group's internal origin point was far of. Since you can't change a group's origin you either have to explode it, or convert it to a component and then change it's axes.

Guys, IO believe Kamikazee is talking about the Terrain (mesh) imported from GE, not the imagery. Valuable info about the imagery, too, however.

Thanks Gai, for replying. Sounds like I'll make this a request for the next release . Ever since the last couple releases of GE, it seems the cameras translations (at least for me) of SU scenes to GE have been on steroids and require too much adjusting in GE. IMHO this is too inconvenient to be practical. John

1- The newest version of dwg we support is 2007. When you save down to 2007 in civil 3d it strips out the google earth snapshot entity because its "unsupported". 2010 dwg might support geolocation but we can't import it... 2 - Civil 3d uses the same com api that sketchup uses. I think you get the exact same quality that you currently get in SU. Zooming in closer is the only way i know of to increase the resolution of the terrain. hope this helps. Simone.
