Hi Shokan, hi folks. After you import the DXF file into your SketchUp (SU) model, provided that it is not sloppy cad, ie the edges are properly connected at the corners, there are no gaps at corners, the edges do not cross at corners or protrude inside a space that you want to fill, there are no overlapping edges, you can simply retrace any edge to close a face. Then you can push/pull it at will. There is also a utility that comes with SU that allows the closing of faces. Make sure that, in preferences, you enable all extensions. Then, in the Tools menu you shall have the choice Utilities --> Create face. Notice that you can create only one face at a time with this. There are plugins that will allow you to speed up this process as well as plugins that may help in repairing sloppy cad files. Just ideas.

@wo3dan said: jgb, then don't click "Download Model" but drag the decired icon into your SU instance. The 3DW-page you are on stays open for other items to drag into SU. (b) As for the abusing tags, I agree. Well I be damned! It DOES work. I had tried drag-n-drop long time before and it did not work, but now I know why not. I always have the Warehouse in full screen, and I tried to D&D the large model view, not the Icon. So because SU does not put the Warehouse in a separate Window outside of SU, I had no place to drag it to. And you cannot drag the model view. Now with the Warehouse set to a large portion of the screen, I have a piece of my model space available to drag to. Problem solved by endrun. Thanks again Wo3.

So to recap... The plugin 'modelfunction' is the culprit ? http://modelfunction.com/ Perhaps best avoided UNLESS you anticipate glitches ???

There's also a curve maker plugin that allows you to draw different spirals (not only this parallel, if I am not mistaken, "Archimedes" spiral) [image: 9YM2_curve-maker.png] Also check out the other plugins on that site as they are really awesome for certain, special tasks.

Sorry, it was not yourimage but Imageshack. It loads extremely slowly (probably also depending on geographical location) or for some, it does not load at all. Then if it loads, it gets embedded in that website where eventually it displays very small... Anyway, best is to attach it straight here (below the text area you type your message). This also have the advantage that it will remain here (unlike images of some people who delete them from time to time on external sources). Your tip of closing SU and reopening sounds interesting; next time I'll try (I also have more than enough toolbars - in 5 rows above my SU screen).

Thanks for the help guys. To answer the questions, it said Pro in the corner, the license info was entered and accepted. I dont know what the issue was, but I managed to fix it. I uninstalled all traces of Sketchup from my computer, and reinstalled it. This time, a red welcome window popped up and said, my Pro version expired (because I hadn't entered my lisence yet) and these are the features that only Pro has... blah blah blah. That never happened the first time I installed Pro. So I entered my license info and now all is good. I don't know what the issue was... it seems like either cookies or something were getting it all confused, or somehow not everything that needed to was downloaded or something.

Materials can be assigned to groups/components and edges, too, so they are not always that easy to get rid of. ThomThom has a nifty plugin to work with such messy models: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=17587 and he also has one that you can use to quickly replace one material with the other: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=26013 Also it is often an issue that these WH models are compilations of some other WH models (thus the very similar or sometimes same materials with different names). TIG has a plugin that aims to consolidate them: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=33516

@gisdude said: @drafter x said: I can tell your working with architectural drawings. I'm going to say what most will not, and that is that architects are some of the absolute worst when it comes to drawing things precisely in autocad drawings. I beg to differ - engineers are the absolute worst at snaps, trims, etc. Not to mention there redlines on drawings... Agreed. Although many Architects are just as guilty.

Hi, could you please elaborate on why you need it to be a server/client system? To my understanding, SketchUp only works locally and its hardware requirements aren't that high.

Funny, I have been playing with something similar tonight. There is a plugin called Qhull. You might find this interesting to generate random cell structure. http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=19040&hilit=qhull I tried to combine Qhulls' Voronoi with Lattice Maker and Artisan. It got kind of messy, but at least it looks organic. [image: BAq7_vo.png] [image: ngjw_x7.jpg]

When I make large cities like that, I almost always have all the data from the city in GIS format. So it comes with street curb lines, building footprints. Then its super easy to take those layers into SU and make a city footprint, and extrude all the buildings to approximate heights. There have been times where I didn't have the GIS data though and I've copied in G.E. terrain data, and traced all the buildings as fast as possible and then deleted the G.E. terrain imagery and just used a nice clean flat plane. That is how I tend to do it at least, Chris

Of course if the SKP and SKB files are on the same hard drive and you can't access the SKP, you probably won't be able to access the SKB either. Better to just make a back up on a separate drive or other media.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIsaATIedtI I made a video that shows how I like to do it. One important thing is that in my video, I first smoothed the terrain. You could select all the faces and edges and open the "Soften/Smooth" Dialog window and move the slide until all edges appear to disappear and the tarrain looks smooth. Then just do like the video shows. Its a good quick method to get paths onto terrains. Chris
