I understand wanting to stick with it until you get it right. Good luck doing so. As to KT being easy, well, I'm probably not the best one to ask. I think it is easy but I only ever do very basic stuff and I usually do essentially the same thing every time. These renders only took a few minutes to complete and other than making some adjustments to the material using a preset, I didn't really do anything special. The background in the last one is just your concrete material inserted as the background in KT. A few seconds to do and I think it really improved the way the ring looks. Keep plugging away and you'll have it.

Another way... [considering you are making a physical model and 1mm is optimistic!] Is to use Slicer to make some formers across the 'horn' at say 25mm c/c. Cut these from ply and build a 'former' around a central spine. Add a roughly cut over-sized sheet to one face, temporarily tacked in place and then trimmed to match the 'former' on both of its edges. Repeat on an adjoining side scribing the abutting edge. Trim the other edge of this second side to the 'former'. Repeat for all four sides gluing the sides together - avoiding attaching it to the 'former' pieces. Remove the temporary tacking and take out the former - if the shape is very convoluted make the central spine removable [wedges?] and remove the 'slices' individually...

I have recently updated my GE to the latest possible version and have no isues with it at all (also on XP). As for the skirts: yes, it's good if the edges merge a bit as there is less risk for gaps should a terrain update happen. Just model the skirt as small (extent and elevation) as ultimately necessary - and especially be careful to affect the surrounding buildings' footprint as little as possible. I do not know how the GE terrain and the one imported can be so different however. But now with SU 8 (as you have it), you are actually not importing straight from GE but from Maps (they share the same database I believe)

I have no idea about these things - I am just the guy who says hello here at the door. Best is to go down on the forum index and post in the developers forum. All the witchcraft is going on there.

You're likely to become overwhelmed attempting such a model if you're new to SU. I would suggest starting out with something a little simpler (like maybe a rowboat? ). Just a suggestion.

Sorry to respond to my own thread, but NYC SketchUp has breaking news, and I thought it'd be of interest. Regarding out upcoming meeting on the 16th: Google has just given us the all clear to announce that we're going to be joined, via video conference, by John Bacus, Product Manager for SketchUp! He'll be holding a Q&A session for those attending! This should be terrific for SketchUp fans of all stripes. URL is in the first message of the thread, hope to see you there!

It is actually possible to colour lines themselves...assuming you were happy to just use a single line for each string. You can do this in the Styles Browser. Dig your way through the tabs through In Model and Edit, then choose the Edges tab and change the setting from the default 'All same' (ie black) to 'By Material'. You can then colour them with the paint bucket, just like a surface. My preference would be (especially if you want to vary the thickness) to use either a 2D very long rectangle for each string, or use a triangle rather than a circle for the cross-section. In other words, make each string a very long prism. Paint each string the appropriate colour then smooth and hide its edges...so that the colour doesn't get drowned out by the black outline as you zoom away. You'll never notice that the string isn't round...and you'll save a heck of a lot of faces if you want to do anything fancy with them at the windings.

It's remembered with the SKP so add it to your normal template and new SKPs should then take those settings...
