Thanks for the link! I'll definitely check this out as it looks promising for fixing issues with the model itself.

What this doesn't offer, though, is the ability to set a scale factor. Manual entry is just fine for now - just hoping to streamline a bit. Maybe this exercise will get me to learn how to make my own script.

    Two things you can do:
1 - scale the model waaaay up, like 10000X, then perform the Outer Shell operation
2 - Export the models as STL, then upload to https://modelrepair.azurewebsites.net/ to have that free service merge them for you.

The Pro version is not likely to do any better than the free version for this operation.

The model in the sketchup warehouse is actually the one i did use, however, it's not detailed enough to print off because it's essentially made up of lines and surfaces, which aren't suitable 3D printing because they are not solids so I'm modifying it for accuracy.

If i can send you the file, it would be great if you could show me how to do it. Thanks heaps.

Like Pilou says, you'll want to use the "Outer Shell" function. Here's a video:

Kellen, you can try rotating the spoon 90 degrees so it's laying on its edge, but shallow curves are always hard to print on an FFF (filament) printer.

You could also try using Meshmixer (it's free!) to generate the supports and see if that helps.

You could "stitch" this together rather quickly. Or you could add verticals at the 3 corners then skin each of the three sides with Curviloft. Group all and reverse the faces so that all outsides are the front or white material.

The way this was created, you could also use Extrusion tools- extrude edges by vector from one shell shape to the other (which seems to be a copy). Similarly you could have used Joint Push Pull--Vector Push Pull on one shape to extrude it up and make the second shell as well.

One way to stitch it is just with vertical lines point to point since the shapes are identical.

Yes, thank you so much. That is exactly what I wanted. I was trying to make it harder than it is. I will get the extension for .skp --> .stl.

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for your answer. I always use https://netfabb.azurewebsites.net/ which is great, but an external step. I would like to wrap within SU because stl im- and export always takes a lot of time AND removes layer/material data.

I have been using Promap 3D models in the UK but the models are pretty basic a bit like Google Earth but with no textures. How did you get or who made the 3D models of the buildings of the city ?

    1. I saw a few months past a video where you would input your model and the plugin would find the mistakes so printing would go smoother; what is the name of this software? Does anyone have any suggestions?

    2. How do I convert my model from .skp to .stl? I saw a plugin that would do that, but again, it mean little at the time and now it is critical...I think.

with a slicer you can deforming layer by layer expanding the loop line is ok if you don't exceeded the 1/2 the nozzle width in displacement per layer "Usually the head moves in layers, moving in two dimensions to deposit one, small nozzle to form a thin and tacky bead of plastic that will adhere to the material at 45 or to not exceeded 45 degree to last layers but if you bend it or twist it may break a part the layers or change shape of object surface you will need to rebuild the model with a different path length.

if you can cad it to one layer at a time in a single unbroken and uncross path loop
that stay at rest with gravity that is also adheres 100 % to previous layer you can make a close surface wall

by moving though the display section plans thus a check test for close loops can be completed

Hi Rev, superglue and hot glue are commonly used to attach 3D printed parts together. For some novel ways including friction welding the parts together, you may check out this piece on Makezine.

Regarding the long skinny triangles, I wouldn't worry about them unless you are experiencing trouble while printing. While they aren't ideal, I've never personally had trouble printing them. That said, increasing the polycount while exporting is likely the best way to avoid the long triangles, but then you can run into overly heavy models that take longer to process and can also make for a lower quality print.
