BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

I've been using it on a current project, it was working fine but now the gml texturizer window won't open and it crashes SU quite alot. I've tried reinstalling it but it still does it. Crashes SU7 too. There are no installation notes on their website. Good app though when it works.

I just got a program from here http://www.kissmyimage.com/en/download/ It will keep the pixel size of an image the same but reduce the file size to one you input. I am using it for panoramas on virtual tours and it is amazing. I am dropping files from 3mb to 900kb without any noticable difference. There is a free version with a very small water mark. Full version is cheap. I highly recommend this, the people on the panorama forums say it is way better than what PS can do.

Gotcha. It's in the Windows menu on a Mac as well. I did not see it because it was stuck to the layers window in the corner of the screen. Thanks! Jim

@richcat said: Thanks - I was beginning to wonder. I tried importing the same brick texture into 6 and 7 with same sized squares, but created separately in each version and got the following result below or am I missing something when importing Is this what your getting I'm guessing that the change is so textures are imported more closely to real size. Most of the times when I imported textures in SU6 they where much too small. ..but that's just pure guesswork... But in your examples the textures at least appear to be proportional.

Thanks Scott for the heads-up - indeed a strange issue but it's good to know in case someone gets into the same trouble! (I cannot comment on the Vray part of it )

I think it would work fine. I've used sub/smooth plugin on some cartoon characters. here: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=13476 and http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=9859 Solo has a ton of them at http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=9675 Teezer's Raptor is here. http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=9920 and Coen has a sculpture and tutorial here. http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=9148 These aren't buildings but might give you some techniques for the sub/smooth plugin. I think kwistenbiebel has a thread on an interior and an exterior in which he used the sub/smooth plugin on, and MonsterZero has a video on how he uses plain sketchup as a polymodeler. I'll be interested in seeing what you come up with. EDIT: Kwisten's interior http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=9991&p=64453&hilit=zaha#p64453 Kwisten's famous Render #22 http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=10224&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=subdivide MonsterZero's video of modeling character: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=6070&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=monsterzero

It only shows up if you have plugins installed and or enabled. Go to Preferences and look for Extensions. Then turn on everything in there. One of those is installed in the plugins menu, and will therefore add it. Otherwise just copy all your plugins from 6 to 7 and the menu will appear on its own. Chris

Thanks modelhead. Are you familiar with the Trim feature in CAD? If so do you know how to do this in SU. It seems in SU that if you make a mistake and try to change it later it causes more of a problem and ends up deleting more than you want.

Dear All, Nick Johnson of Cadsoft Solutions (http://www.cadsoftsolutions.co.uk/) recently sent me this video and message regarding the use of ViaCAD as a 2d drafting aid for Sketchup: Although ViaCAD can import 3D models from SketchUp, owing to the polygon nature of Sketchup files these files are not much good for making automated 2D drawings as all of the polygon edges are displayed. However, if you export your SketchUp model as .DWG then these can be imported into ViaCAD without issue and can be fully dimensioned and placed in scaled drawing layouts. I have knocked up a quick movie which illustrates these 2 approaches for you... http://www.cadsoftsolutions.co.uk/movies/sketchup_2_viacad.mov You will need Apple's QuickTime Video Player to watch the movie which can be downloaded at no charge from the following URL: http://www.apple.com/quicktime I hope you find this useful. Kind regards, Bob

Nate, I suggest you download and install the plugin, UVtools. See this discussion about the tool, and how to use it. Note that it may still be a work-in-progress. Be sure to read all the posts in the discussion, to fully understand how to get the tool to work, as there are no other instructions. All issues are, however, covered in the discussion: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=10404 It's a great tool! (Thanks, again, Whaat.) I even added, to the above discussion, one of my experiments with mapping a globe. Regards, Taff

@johnsenior1973 said: @nomeradona said: thanks alan. yes solo that was good. im relly thinkin galong that lin ehow to make procedural texture even...but looking directly the effect in Sketchup after editting. btw im surprise that now photoshop CS4 has also 3d stuff, where you can import 3d objects and project texture unto the object like sketchup.. my hope is CS4 could open SKP file too.. i have nt tried i just only watch video... CS3 also had 3D features. I think they've extended the 3D features a lot in CS4 though. There is a plugin to import models from the 3DW straight into CS3: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Photoshop_CS3_Extended_Plug-In_for_Google_3D_Warehouse you re right mate. i am actually using CS2 thats why i dont know. but this CS4 seems worht to fetch.

this did not work. i saved the file carefully with the toolbars i want open but it opened the way i did not want: the wrong toolbars and all around the place. the second strange thing is: the templates i saved to SU7's template folder do not show up after a spotlight search!! how could they have become invisible?

@jim said: Chris, look for it in the Outliner window. Thanks Jim, but I suddenly realised that SU might not put elements or components in order with the last on top like HTML. This seems to be true. There was wrong data in a js array but it didn't show up as I expected. I see that more people are using web dialogs. I hope this revelation might be helpful for them. Thanks again, Chris

@msm said: I've been looking around at some of the work people do on this forum. If I want that hand-drawn look, I wonder if it's better to put the trees in my model on Sketchup or in Photoshop? I ask because I've noticed hardly anyone uses Sketchup trees in their models... Assuming you are only concerned with producing a 2D illustration you need to consider that once you move from the 3D model to 2D you are committed to things like perspective, light and shadow etc. Which means that any objects you source and add after the fact must conform. I always try to include as many 'ornaments' as possible in Sketchup before it goes into Photoshop or Paint. Tip: The secret to working in Photoshop is 'layers' - these work differently than layers in Sketchup. Always make a duplicate of your master and call it something like 'master working copy'. Now create a layer called trees or whatever and make sure it is the overlay layer. You can now use the pencil or brush tool to add freehand strokes over the 'master wc'. If you don't like the effect just delete that layer and you have the untouched working copy underneath. When you are happy with the result you can merge the layers and take it into a filter like watercolor or play with some of the light renders. I also suggest you check out a pen/tablet for drawing instead of a mouse. Wacom makes some good inexpensive ones. Play around... be happy. DE
