BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

I've always thought foot petals would be the trick. Then maybe the whole desk-keyboard moves in and out like airplane controls.

That does not work for me as I would need to type a semicolon ; (instead of the comma) to separate the values and it involves using Ctrl as a mod key. For the same reason, I cannot move either to relative or absolute co-ordinates. The SU Team did not think of things like this when designing SU. About 2/3 of the world's population cannot use these commands I would risk to say.

I think I've discovered my problem. The models I've been working on were created in SU6 and SU7. Any groups that were twisted after creation have their group axis out of whack when edited in SU8. Thanks for the input.

I've got Windows 7 on my Mac too. It a good operating system, much better than XP (but of not as good, as OSX of course!) 8 gigs is plenty, but if someone is happy to pay for you to go to 16 gigs, go for it! However, watch out for the damn Shockwave Flash plug in. It has a memory leak in it, and if you have a lot of ram, it will eat it if you are running a browser (like Safari or Firefox). Therefore it's wise to get the "Click to Flash" plugin installed to halt Flash in its tracks. I'm pleased your office colleagues had a good experience. I had a very similar experience too. They thought the computer was a hard drive!!! There was complete disbelief when I had it up and running! Tom

You will need to make that top face of the base into a group or component and also introduce a new layer where you put it like Wodan says. See the file below (open the layer dialog to see what's happening). Also I hid all the edges of the base and top components where they match. The edge now you see in scene 1 is the edge of that new group I created inside the base component. Copanar faces edges issue.skp

Google won't really ever buy a script and implement. They would want to write it themselves. They also like to encourage developers to write scripts, because it adds capabilities to SU, and makes SU even more popular. Soo, it doesn't make a lot of sense for Google to implement things that others have already made, because its not cool to say 'hey, develop scripts', then turn around and re-write them to distribute with SketchUp, and not pay the author. So its not really a good business model for them to follow the way they currently run things. But even still, we had booltools before they released their solid tools. Making a terrain from 3d points was a script before the sandbox tool were added in version 5. Like Alan said, 3dtext was a plugin first, then SU wrote it. So they have done it a few times, though I'm not sure they really did it on purpose per se.

I'm using V-Ray with SU V8.0. What's more I'm using the second-to-latest version of V-Ray, because I find the delay on SU start-up to be unacceptable with the latest V-Ray. You just need to make sure that, when installing V-Ray, you change the default installation folder from SU7/Plugins to SU8/Plugins. Edit: I see Thom has already mentioned this...and that you're on a Mac, but I'll leave this in place to reinforce the message for other readers.

I am also running sketchup 8 on 10.7.2 , but am not having any problems with rubies showing up. or functioning. I did have most of mine installed under Snow Leopard, then upgraded to Lion. Don't know if that makes any difference. Are you installing the rubies into the user level library or into the system level one ? Mine are at the system level and I believe that they need to be. Dan

Also shapebender would work well there, though it would tend to actually warp the component, which I guess might not be desireable.

Yes: Update. I repaired permissions, but I find the behavior is intermittent. Does not always happen. It goes away for good periods. Could it be plugins?

And here is a (complete???) list of entries you can use the VCB/Measurement box for: http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=151558 (Always "refer to..." the actual tool for more detailed explanations)
