and what about the Studio-Roosegaarde-Solar-Bike-Path-Van-Gog image? How is that made in vray? too many lights?
That should be pretty simple to do with an emmissive material. Once you have an image of the pattern, just stick it in an emmissive layer. Make sure anything that's not lit is pure black, or else you may end up with some undesired glow. (you could mask the emmissive layer to make sure that doesn't happen.)
It took all of us a long time of reading and playing to figure them all out. Once you understand, it will be like a whole new world. Here are some resources.

I just don't get why people use refraction on window glass? Maybe someone can school me on it. I prefer to use thin cheat glass- single pane, just reflection with 100% transparent black or a little less if you want coloration. Refraction seems like something you really only need when rendering, let's say, a glass vase or something like that, no?
nope, not available yet. Not sure if it ever will be either, because a vrmesh could come from any product, and could have a poly count beyond what SketchUp can handle.
I uninstalled Sketchup 2015 and vray. Ran Ccleaner, cleaned my registry using ccleaner. Then installed both the software. Now everything is fine. I should have waited instead of posting my problems here.

Nobody from Chaos to answer ?
::crosses arms:: This isn't even our forum!

First of all, why in the V2.XX, VRayForSU assigns material color IDs automatically by default ? I think it was more useful with one ID color (black) by default and manually assigning Color IDs on materials we just wanted to...
Someone requested random ID colors, but I agree, there should be a way to disable it.
"This is a forum for helping people learn the software"
No kidding. My apology wimve. I read it now and think...what a *erk.
I am probably best at the things I have struggled over the most. Obviously on this day I should have had a struggle with my manners.

.mat is a 3d studio max format. You want a .vrmat or .vismat format. There are quite a few available for download on the Chaos Group website, as well as V-Ray Express for SketchUp, which will give you a nice library of V-Ray materials and lighting/studio scenes to import and play with. Not sure if you will have full access to these resources until after you purchase a license, but either way, you need to use a .vrmat or .vismat.
Thanks for the speedy response! Will give it a try.

Using sketchup to create complex dynamic components isn't unusual so vray should definitely work out how to cater for this.
Like I said, we can probably figure out a way to turn off some functionality such as monitoring scene changes constantly. This is the first complaint I've heard about this afaik, I'll keep a lookout for any other slowdowns that are a result of our presence, perhaps there's a simple solution.
