Can set up a 2D shape with a cutting plane, Place one top, one bottom, plus a rim, refer to my DC,s @ pcmoor in the warehouse (plate with holes, cylinder / column)

It is also possible to have multiple cutters that activate on exploding the parent, leaving the children and grand kids etc, refer to the multi-cut wall opening

thank you for the responses. i've pulled off of the doorstyle part of the project...actually, i've put the entire Sketchup project on the back burner for now b/c we've had an influx of business that i have to attend to. in the mean time, i'll research Sketchup layers to see if that's one possible solution to displaying various doorstyles at will. i'll let you know how that works out when i get a chance...

ok, so i finally came up with a solution that works. i can now change the number of evenly spaced vertical partitions such that individual shelves (or sets of shelves) span the exact distance between them, making the lines that define ends of the shelves visible as they would be in reality:

the explanation of how i got here and the hurdles i had to overcome would be quite verbose, so i'm just going to upload the component for you to download and play with. if anyone has questions about how or why i might have done something a certain way, feel free to ask. also, if anyone has suggestions on how to make this cabinet component less complex geometry/rendering-wise, i'm all ears. i know there's probably more geometry present than is necessary in order to make this cabinet work as i intend, but i'm a beginner, so that's to be expected...i don't know all of the ins and outs of SketchUp yet.

PS - how difficult would it be to add a 2nd predefined "Copies" attribute (not my own custom attribute) to the component attributes dialog box?...or is it even possible? this would make my model simpler with respect to the amount of geometry present with the component in its most basic form (0 shelves, 0 vertical partitions), if not in the amount of overall geometry rendered when many shelves and/or vertical partitions are present.

each instance will work independently, but a problem occurs when you change the reference within the child to different parents or update a formula (all are updated), this can be overcome by making the component unique or by using parent! instead of the named parent component that way you can have many parents, But by using parent! you lose the automatic update reference function within the component. So depending on your requirements pick the technique to suit.

cub!lenY , cubby!lenY, big!lenY can all be replaced with parent!lenY

Note when editing or updating latter a specific reference will overwrite the parent! in all the children

this is the closest dynamic component to the one I am trying to create,

I need a window to first tilt inward by 10 degrees, and then close again, and then the next time you click, to then turn inward by 90 degrees...

like this example, can this be done by clicking on the same part of the window? or does it involve creating parent and child elements and clicking on a different part of the model to get it to do one or the other...

I don't really want to be able to turn and then whilst it's open, also be able to tilt !

so anyone know of an existing model out there? or help me to put one out there..

To trim the edge, you must work with three parts in one component : the center (rectangular) and the edges (triangles). How said pcmoor, you must hide some edges and your component seems to be only one part.
Now, you must script the size and place of each part, using the global component angle and length. The length of the edges are calculated with the tangent of the angle and the global width, the lenth of the center with the total length minus edges, etc.

You can rotate and scale the component (when you rotate, it does'nt update the shape, you must scale or click on it with the "interact" tool)

Of course, there are problems when you're near to the horizontal or vercital, because the tangent become huge for one edge.

Referring to other posts, it seems that it is good practice to refer to the parent component literally as (Parent!wantedAttribute) So for shelf#1," =(Parent!Lenx)" instead of "=cub#1!LenX" or for the other "=cub#2!LenX"; works for both without problems, a much better way to go..for reuse.

I also prefer to use the 'Parent' word to reference the parent component. This makes sub-components more interchangeable with other DC's, so you can change-out sub-components more easily.
