    hi&thanks for this great patch!

i got pretty frustrated to see that my old p4 pc running sketchup on winxp easily outperforms my macbook due to the mentioned freezes...
disabling fast feedback only did not help. if i disable hw acceleration, the freezes vanish. but of course you get visibly better performance using the patch. (btw, rotating large structures without hw accel on the mac looks about as "smooth" as with hw accel on the mentioned pc with geforce fx 5200 go)

    details:
    Video chipset: GMA X3100
    Model Name: MacBook
    Model Identifier: MacBook4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MB41.00C1.B00
    SMC Version (system): 1.31f0
    running SketchUp 7 (7.0.10938) on Mac OS X 10.5.8

i wonder if 10.6 works any better - according to http://developer.apple.com/graphicsimaging/opengl/capabilities/ opengl implementetion has been worked on since 10.5.8 (version 2.0 for gma x3100 and 1.4 for gma 950 instead of 1.2 for both in leopard).

    regards
    peter

I got Win7 and a nVidia 8800GT card - works great. Smooth as anything.
    Pretty sure it's a hardware/driver issue.

Would be cool but it's hell distorted as well, isn't it?
    😄

(I'll move the topic to the bug reports - leaving a "fascinating" shadow topic here - if you don't mind 😉 )

Attached are some of the errors.

With regard to the problem of the Windows Installer being unable to write to C:\Config.msi... I know this issue has been quiet for a while, but I was searching about this earlier today and found a hint that may be helpful, so I wanted to share it.

There are some forums where people have suggested that this error is a result of the MSI service not being registered properly. To see if that's the case, you could try the following procedure and then retry the operation that was failing.

On the “Start” menu, choose “Run”. In the “Open” box, type “msiexec /unreg”, and hit ENTER. On the “Start” menu, hit “Run”. In the “Open” box, type “msiexec /regserver”, and hit ENTER.

That will re-register the MSI server, possibly repairing the error.

Check your XP - we turn off HW Acceleration for certain cards on PC. If that's the case, do the same for Mac.

    Hi TamĂĄs,

I don't use Win 7 but what I'd suspect, maybe your memory is not too much either. I know that Vista is rather memory hungry and though Win 7 is said to be a smoother OS, I doubt that they have tweaked it too much in the direction of using less RAM.

What Remus says - autosaving - sounds reasonable and maybe some more memory would help with this issue.

    Cabu,

I have a laptop with the same video card and I don't have this issue. If it locks up and turning off hardware acceleration "seems" to fix the problem, it is only a sign of your video card (or in this case, rather your video driver) being the problem.

You should try to find a more up-to-date video driver and update your existing one since working with HW acceleration off will definitely slow down your SU especially noticeably with bigger models.

If you are upgrading or downgrading, do not copy the Plugins or Tools folders over between versions - Ruby files in the wrong version of SU are a frequent source of bugsplats. When you uninstalled before reinstalling, did you check what files and folders the uninstall had left behind, and delete those "manually"?

Also, are you using Windows Vista? There have been problems with the SU Startup application that do not appear if you open SU by double-clicking on a SKP model in Explorer.

One question would be: if you turn off HW Accel on XP and OS X, is it still faster?

    Hi Everyone,

With regard to accessing the 3D Warehouse through a firewall, make sure the following items are open:

    http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse (port 80)
    http://www.google.com/accounts (ports 80 and 443)

    Hi jjanke81,

As a test, export the SketchUp file as KMZ, then open a browser and click the "Upload" button in the upper right-hand corner. See if you can upload the KMZ manually.

    Regards,

Hi dale, I have had zero problems with dxf. If you take the same model.dwg, and import it into SU via dxf, then via dwg, that the dwg is OK, and the dxf is not?

One of my pet thoughts, thoroughly unconfirmed, is that things might work better in imperial. Importing metric files might introduce further inaccuracies due to the conversions involved. Once this suggestion was strongly turned down by Jim Holman, but it still remains that the floating-point accuracy of SU is not as strong as in the heavyweight CAD apps. And I understand that the DWG/DXF importer is third-party code. Possibly I am still quite wrong...

Well, that's the dreaded flickering bug probably:

As it says, try to avoid crossing shadows/lights borders with your camera path. You can make this less annoying if you turn off shadows and only leave "use sun for shading" on in the shadows dialog. This will not cast shadows on your (bare) ground plane however so if you need them, put there a horizontal face to receive these shadows.

I've yet to find the cause of this problem, but it can be seriously annoying at times (I usually do half-a-something, and flip a copy to make it symmetrical).

When you do that - do you make the one half into a component and then mirror the copy?
