Jean, thanks for the suggestions, I had looked at it that way already but I'm really wanting to be able to work with one file. The size may be prohibitive but I'll get to that eventually. Chris, Namesets looks very good, I've had a little play with it with my morning coffee. I'll delve into it further later and I'm sure I will have some questions for you.

Thanks Jean, Still touch & go, but seems to be working now. I had to experiment with placing the profile on different points along the path to get a perfect 'followme'. Thanks to all,

Peter A test scene would be interesting, but would probably have to be developed with a specific test in mind, or contain layers that could be turned on progressively as the test goes on. In my experience, shadows, poly count and scale are the things that can cause difficulty. I always have the shadows off or at least have created a scene where they are on that I can reference to. Poly count, that's hard especially when something like trees and other vegetation of any quality are part of the model, I guess just good layer management. By scale I mean, if the area being modeled is large problems can occur, but usually that is more clipping than slowdown. Anything that I can learn that serves a better work flow I am interested in.

It is the 'aspect ratio' that can be [re]set by various 3rd party cameras an other tools. There are many camera options settable via the API. Changing the image width/height so it doesn't correspond to the actual window size gives that effect....

@Gaieus @unknownuser said: they also need to find out how to cut that square up, don't they? Yes! @TIG OK, I will do it like this. Probably I add some points or lines where the pieces can be aligned. Thank you all!

@box said: I know there is the sketchup viewer which you can get people to download and install, but is there a way to make a self viewable file? I'm thinking an emailable version for smaller stuff and something on a CD for larger projects. Eventually I would like to produce a model of a cruise ship and be able to tour through it without having to install any software. eDrawing for Sketchup works great, sends as zip or exe; rotate, zoom bla bla; Is 99 dollars but I received free version somehow on't remember how or where. http://edrawings.geometricglobal.com/Downloads/eDrawings+for+SketchUp/index.aspx

I just ran across this idea myself, but I guess it wasn't original. At any rate, I have a SketchUp file demonstrating this and some sample screen shots. [image: VZEM_sectionshadow-a.png] [image: n1ZL_sectionshadow-b.png] Shadows in Section Cut Seems it would be a pretty easy ruby script. User starts with section cut selected. Ruby copies all objects in active group to a new group. Changes materials Pastes section cut in place reverses section cut direction. If any geometry is changed the script has to be re-run.

@gaieus said: Hm... There have been a couple of issues in the WH lately but I have never seen this one yet. Try to download your model and upload again (this should overwrite your existing one in the WH rather than uploading as a new one). The preview image should be generated immediately when you upload but the 3D view may take a while (couple of hours at least but sometimes a day or two). I have actually tried uploading it several times. However the big black thumbnail is exactly what I have on my home machine, even when I download something from the warehouse and save it on my machine I get the big black box thumbnail.

I recently had this problem, except in a much more discreet fashion. If your ever un-sure if fighting is going on, reverse the faces and that should highlight the problem if any. On the matter of the yard lines, I would make everything a component. Such as every yard line and so on. It's a memory and time saver.

It also looks like some serious clipping: http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=36261 It can have several reasons (beside OpenGL issues with your video card).

If you in tight budged, then there are two free renderer that I would look on; Kerkythea and LuxRender. Kerkythea has a commercial sister Twilight (same engine, but streamlined UI. Limited to 32-bit memory space and SU polygon handling capabilities). LuxRender has a fairly new exporter so may need some maturity, but worth look on (sorry no deeper experience with it). In landscaping one may often need displacement or instanced high poly threes or other entourage. Thea Render can do both, with near unlimited resolution (up to available ram, with Thea 64bit), in reasonable cost. Vue Infinite may be hard to beat with it's EcoSystem, but it may be out of budget. There are quite many topics on rendering programs, many has a favorite one, but best to test those that look interesting. Also, different tasks may give a need to have multiple renderers available.

To MaryonSketchup: From the picture you provided, it looks as if for some reason the edges of that rectangle are not on the same plane as the rest of the flat face. These edges may be "microscopically" separated from that plane, and I do not believe even using Intersect Selected will change that. So apparently you have a faceless rectangle, which may even be slightly twisted. Try drawing a diagonal in the rectangle. Of course, I may be missing something in the information. You could also upload a copy of your file in much the same way as the image. Only meant to assist. mitcorb
