Or just draw a short edge between a few of the edges on the flat top (not at the perimeter), select it and move upwards with Alt pressed. Use FlipEdge to fix the flat areas.

Thanks. i haven't had a chance to do this yet, but will be trying it out in the next couple of days. I figured I would have to use sheets of paper as a template (those bits of cardboard would definitely jam up my printer), but thanks for confirming what I thought I had figured out. Cheers

Try changing your OpenGL settings under Preferences>OpenGL. Specifically try changing Use Hardware Acceleration. And see if that changes anything for you. You might also check to see if you can update the video drivers.

Well, I suppose in a plugin you can easily do things that are just over and beyond us, puny humans...

Make your component with each of the 5 parts as subcomponents. Then make a copy of the main component and rclick/Make unique. Name the new component Comp1-split or whatever. Double click the new comp and split it with move/rotate tools. Whenever the subcomponents in either comp1 or comp1-split changes it will also change in the other component. But the placement of those subcomponents will stay different because the main components are not the same - only the subcomps are shared.

Well, integrated chipsets do not do any good to SketchUp (or in fact any application that is more than browsing the Internet or writing a Word document).

@raoulfrissen said: @solo said: Got an example of a "beautiful" shape you want to make? I want to make super mario. but all I can at the moment is cubist shapes ... Thanks Do you want to make him in 2D or 3D? Are you familiar with plugins? If you want to model the character in 3D then Artisan would probably be the way to go. It does cost a little bit of money but from what I've heard, it is more than well worth the money. Pete (Solo) would be your guy for this if you take it on and have any questions. Good luck. I'll also give you some links to just a few really great plugins (most of them free) that have at least something to do with organic shapes in general. Take a look at them and use as you have need. Whaat's Artisan Fredo6's FredoScale CPhillips' SketchyFFD Chris Fulmer's Shape Bender TIG's ExtrudeTools Fredo6's RoundCorner Fredo6's Tools on Surface Fredo6's Joint Push Pull Of course, these are just a few and there are many others you will most likely come across while using and discovering SketchUp. Best of luck!

You can also create a circle, the select only some "segments" and resize them with the rescale tool to change the local curvature

hmm.. i think the occurrence at 2:12 is more of a visual glitch caused by the screen recording software then being uploaded/viewed on youtube (as in, i doubt that's how it looks on his screen).. fwiw, here's another video showing him preparing the cuts for layout.. towards the end of the video, he shows his different style settings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF2hYAwAVUM .

Off Topic : FYI, for the benefit of anyone else struggling with a large background model, such as an urban area, here's a tip I learned the hard way. The urban model in its own separate file was 6MB. After exploding most components in order to change the face material (manually & locally, as it turns out) the file size ballooned up to 11.5MB. When added to my own building model that produced a filesize apparently too large for my system to handle. So I exported the urban model from SU8 to 3DS format. That step reduced the file size back down to 2.3MB. Unfortunately, it also undid most of my laborious material changes. So, next time I'll export the complex background to 3DS before I attempt to make material changes. PS---The Global Material Changer script still didn't work on the 3DS file. Instead it caused a lockup & shut-down. Maybe even the reduced total file size is just too big for my system. 4MB of physical memory (plus 256MB of graphics card memory) should be enough for most SU models. But I noticed that my Task Manager showed almost no Virtual Memory in use, even when the CPU was maxed-out. The system Page File is set for Windows to automatically adjust to memory demands. But it doesn't seem to be taking much of the load off the physical memory.

Thanks for the information. Yes indeed in the file menu i can import dxf and dwg files but i have still a problem left. When i for example draw a circle in autocad, save it and then import it in sketchup (even when i have already a component in the scene)the circle apears in the scene but there is no surface created such as when you draw a circle in SU. My intention was to draw complex sections in autocad and then export them to SU to make 3D models of it with for example the push/pull function.

@unknownuser said: One of the main advantages with the multiview (that I highly doubt could be incorporated into what Jim is saying) is that you can start a command in one view and finish it in another. (ie- drawing a simple line Right - my idea is strictly a one-way process. The other "view" instances of SketchUp would be strictly for viewing updated components. Changes in any of the "view" instances would not be relected in the "main" instance. 2-way interaction could be done using a network connection; and if you note the threads in the Dev forum about UDP and Socket programming, we could maybe get the idea someone is already making something similar (collaborative SU) a reality.
