Tweak noise threshold (.03-.1 for tests, .005-.01 for finals) and Max subdivs. Switch to v3.6+! Disable 'Retrace' while testing.
Hardware minimum: Latest I7 32gb ram, healthy SSD, gtx1080ti or better.
According to some rumors on the web, Nvidia will release a new 1180 card this summer. If you can wait a bit - I would expect a small price drop for the 10-series at that point as well.

I don't know about vray, but Thea measures that at surfaces areas and renders a graph. You can create an animation of this graph.
Lightup does the same, but I think it's for artificial light only... maybe not.
