thanks andybot, gonna try to edit the BM first thing on monday.
of course the glossiness is too much, but not by that far. there are glazed roof tiles that kinda look like that.

Thanks Peter. My newbie status is rearing its head, but how do I download the script? I've never done that. When I click on the program (the .rb) a message tells me I don't have the application to run it. Is this a "ruby" program, and if so do I need to purchase it? Thanks

u put (copy) plugins (the .rb files) in the \plugin folder in your sketchup directory. (for example C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 8\Plugins)
they load automatically on sketchup start. they can disabled in window->preferences->extensions

u can view a list of all plugins here:
      http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=250026

must have ruby scripts thread with examples:
      http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=16909

i just discovered that there are plugins a few weeks ago myself, now i'm a huge sketchup enthusiast πŸ˜„

    • White spots on bump map with reflection layer

Before i run 10h of testing what could be the problem, maybe someone here knows the solution to this.

i created a ceramic roofing material myself:
      RooftilesCeramic0058_2_S.jpg
photoshop->converted to BW with red filter
      RooftilesCeramic0058_2_S_BM.jpg
and used the BM as reflection map on the reflection and highlight slot.
i tested how it looks and it was fine:
      only bumpmap, texfresel IOR 2
when i added the reflection map i noticed the white spots in the upper part, strange:
      bump+reflection maps, texfresnel 2.0

and when i rendered a planar roof, this happened:
      whitespots.jpg
notice the white pixels on the roof, you have to zoom in

      material settiongs:
      settings

so... is it a problem with the bump map, which i used for the reflection slots as well? or is it something completey different?
or maybe there is a completely different approach in rendering roof textures? i just dont want to use displacment.

    • RE: Constructive Rendering Criticism

looks good! really like the rusty look.

some criticism: the textures in the foreground (especially the white pebbles) and the shadows of the tree look a little off. i guess they have been done in post pro? i think u can do the whole scene minus the sky via modelling. also try "make fur" for the grass patches, really good and quick results.
my approach in general would be to make as much as possible via rendering, because my post pro skills aren't that good. but i guess thats a matter of personal taste and style

    • RE: What's your beginners tip?

u can shortcut any function, even plugins. as a gamer, my hand automatically rests on wasd all the time πŸ˜„ so i set up shortcuts that are easy to reach from that: q: make line, w: paintbucket, e: push pull, r: move
spacebar: selection tool, x: xray mode
      etc.
one of the best shortcuts for modelling with groups and components is view/component edit/hide rest of model.
the ability to toggle that is just awesome.

no need to change the IOR for refraction, as there is no refraction in your scene. BTW seems you are now ok by experiencing πŸ˜‰
my KT tutorial also contains the fresnel explanation...(http://www.sketchupartists.org/tutorials/sketchup-and-kerkythea/kerkythea-take-a-deeper-look-at-materials/)

thanks a lot for the explanation majid! but i can't render your skp file 😞 the materials list in vray is empty. maybe because we use different vray versions? i have 1.48.89.
but your idea is really good: im just gonna run some tests myself with 20 different cylinders and see how different values behave.

edit: ok, here's the results if anyone is interested. wanted to test more (multiplier by exponent?, texFresnel on refraction map slot?) but got lazy...

    • TexFresnel Explanation?

      Hello everyone!
Can someone explain how TexFresnel works? I googled and found this http://www.vray.com/vray_for_sketchup/manual/refraction_layer.shtml but it seems outdated.
I use TexFresnel as reflection map and i know what the IOR does, i even found a list of IOR values for different materials, but what about Refract IOR and the other variables?

      ?!?

    • RE: Shadows keep dissapearing.

i have a geforce 8400 GS 😳 at work. maybe thats the problem.

i also just read this somwhere else:

      @unknownuser said:

The SU developers are constantly tweaking the way some operations are carried out trying to achieve more speed and smoother transitions when you move the camera. In the latest version, SU suppresses many display attributes that are the worst resource hogs, like textures and shadows, and sometimes even faces.

Depending on how large the model is and how limited computing power is on a given system, SU will simply stop rendering certain (or all) of these attributes until the scene stabilizes. Otherwise, if SU had to constantly keep regenerating all display attributes as you pan or zoom, the program would bog down and slow to a crawl.

In other words, it ain't a bug, it's a feature.

but isnt there a way to set shadows to always on? when u set up a scene for rendering, shadow is really important and performance is not...

    • RE: Limit vray usage of cores

      @thomthom said:

SU uses only 1 core at any time - so that should not be an issue.

i meant that SU and the vray renderer use the same thread ID. so the windows method of limiting cores won't do anything, if i want more perfomance for modeling in SU while rendering.

f.ex: i set max cores to 3 of 4 for the SU cpu thread -> vray uses all 3 cores, SU can't use any.

    • Shadows keep dissapearing.

      Hello everyone!
When i activate shadows, they seem to dissapear randomly. changing the time of the sun, or switching off and back on the shadow, seems to fix it momentarily. but when i move the camera or sometimes even when moving the cursor, it keeps dissapearing.

      all is good
cursor moved an inch, shadow is gone :(
