RE: Harewood House
Thanks for the interest Daniel.
Done a bit more today. Slow going though. Not enough hours in the day ...

RE: Best way of modeling a column capital ...
Here it is. Think the geometry could be reduced a bit more but going to run with this at the moment anyway.

RE: Best way of modeling a column capital ...
Came up with this. Get's found out with a close up but doesn't look too bad from further away.
Thanks again for all your help.

RE: Best way of modeling a column capital ...
Hi all,
Thanks so much for the input. I definitely think a texture is the way forward, will post up the finished article in the WIP thread when it's done.
Thanks again.

RE: Best way of modeling a column capital ...
Thanks Rich, the thought of a photo-texture never even entered my head.
I don't intend doing any close ups of the columns so this should be great, just need some jiggerypokery in PS first then.
Thanks again.

Best way of modeling a column capital ...
Hello chaps,
I'm currently modelling a large stately home, as there's going to be a ton of geometry and my laptop is rubbish, I want to make sure I'm modeling things in the best possible way. Also, my modelling of these organicy shapes leaves a lot to be desired, so, before I make a total hash of it and throw the laptop through the window, I'm hoping someone can advise on the best way to model the capital in the photograph? Would it be Artisan? Or is this overkill?
Huge thanks.

RE: Harewood House
Thanks for the interest chaps, bit of pressure on me now to make it half decent (don't hold your breath!).
Anyway, spent about an hour on this tonight whilst watching Sherlock (great tele by the way). Off to bed now. Need my beauty sleep.

Thanks, John. If it's anywhere near your stuff, I'll be more than happy.

Harewood House
Hope it's OK for me to post this in here, there's nothing much to show yet but I want to use this thread as a bit of a 'modeling log' as am determined to get some good renders for my portfolio this year and am modelling (amongst other things) this country house which is about 20 miles from me.
I visited recently and got some photographs. There's also P&Es in a copy of the Vitruvius Britannicus which I have scanned in. There were some additions to the building in the C19th so the elevations do differ from real life but they should be a good guide for scale and mass.
Anyway, best start modeling ...

RE: New Laptop Advice
Thanks everyone, will check them out.
So, in basic terms, am I looking for a good amount of RAM and a good dedicated graphics card?
Thanks again.

New Laptop Advice
I've tried searching for an answer to this that's reasonably recent, but have had no luck.
Basically, my current laptop isn't very good (integrated graphics card etc) and I am looking for a new one. I don't have a massive budget though and woudl be looking to spend somewhere in the region of Β£500 to Β£750.
What should I be looking out for? Lots of RAM? What are the best graphics cards?
I will be using it almost exclusively for SU, Rendering (Twilight at the moment) and the obvious surfing the internet etc. I'm not a gamer.
Any advice much aprpeciated.
Cheers.
