      Gaieus,

Thanks ever so much for your thorough reply AGAIN. I really appreciate it, you've made it all very clear and easy to follow. Thanks!

I was out at 9am taking a few photos (where I could!) and where the snow wasn't too bad so have now got the weekend to just have a little play. πŸ˜„

Also, just one more question if I may. When modelling buildings, how do you photo texture parts of the building which are totally unaccessible?! Or do you just do the best you can by 'borrowing' parts of the building which you CAN see? I assume this is the way to go but unsure what Google will make of it. AM i right in thinkign that I should avoid using SU's materials at all costs?

Many thanks for your reply, excellent, as always Gaieus.

When you talk about pixel sizes and cloning etc, are you referring to processing the image in Photoshop (or similar?), this makes sense. πŸ˜„

When you say: Then later you can combine these parts into one, single image. Do you mean this happens in SU?

      Sorry for silly questions.

    • Adding photo textures to buildings from tight angles...

      Good morning,

Just wondering how you experts deal with adding photo-textures to buildings fro where you can't get a perpendicular photo?

I am trying to model and the pubs of my town and because the town is very old, there are many narrow streets and alleys where you simply can't get a good photo (like this one for example:
      http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b362/leethurston/Photos1016.jpg
      .

I know some work-arounds such as breaking the face of the building down into various segments would help, but just wondering if I am missing somethign or if there is an even better tip you can share?

Also, I have a secondary question. Will GE accept these models that have less than perfect photo textures because of the geography of the buildings

      Thanks.

      Lee

      Jaxcoffee,

I could probably give you a lot of information about where to find documentary evidence in the UK, but I don't think it'll of any use to you!

      Gaieus,

Those are incredible, and throughly inspiring, I mean it! Wow.

I REALLY want to do something like this now!

      Brilliant stuff.

I have been inspired by this map: http://york1852.org/ which is TOTALLY different to how York is now. There is a wealth of information for me also, exciting times!

    • Using SketchUp to model an historical city

      Hi all,

Just after your thoughts on the following...

My town is very old and has lots of photos and old maps available of it. I think it would be RELATIVELY easy to construct a town from models using the maps, photos and other documentary sources. Especially from 1852 where there is a brilliant map avialable.

Is this feasible? Would I have to keep all the models in one huge file on my local drive as uploading to GE would be impossible and TOTALLY wrong!

Just after your thoughts and the feasibility of this project which I would love to do in the future. There would of course be a potential to get help from the local authority etc.

      Thanks!!!

    • Educational Version of SketchUp?

      Hi guys,

I am just after a bit of advice re: the education version of Sketchup PRO.

I am currently (for fun) studying towards a Certificate in Lifelong Learning in Local History at York University. I am just wondering if anyone knows if this would make me eligible for the educational price of SketchUp Pro. I have a NUS card and university email address (@york.ac.uk) but am unsure if the course is 'accreddited enough' for me to qualify.....

I don't have an .edu email address so have to go through a re-seller, I have had a quick look at these and it's a bit confusing: http://www.academicsuperstore.com/eligibility/college

      Any advice, greatly appreciated.

      Thanks Dermot!

Think we're a few years away from the Premiership yet, but nothing would give me greater pleasure!

    • RE: A Welcome Message to New SketchUcation Members

      Hi all,

Just thought i'd better 'introduce' myself as been loitering around the forums for a few weeks now.

Anyway, I'm Lee, 29, support Leeds United and I'm getting married in June this year.

I graduated from Newcastle University in GIS, and hace spent most of career working in Cartography, Measured Building Surveying, Architecture and now employed as CAD designer/technician. I am completely self taught on SketchUp and first encoutnered the software when working for a large modular building company and we needed something to produce some 3d designs. I cobbled a model together and it was really rather embarrassing! Still, I then went on to work at an architects where I used SketchUp alot and my skills improved considerably.

Unfortunately I was made redundant and so spent time working in an awful job doign night work, this was rubbish but I spent a lot of time honing my SketchUp skills, which I have used to a great extent in my new (temporary) job, much to the delight of new colleagues and bosses.

I am a bit strange/geeky that amongst other things (football, pubs, reading and xbox) I actually LOVE to spend time on SketchUp, I really enjoy modelling, especially for GE and so I have signed up to the forum to give me an outlet.

      See you all around.

    • RE: SketchUp Pro from Softsalez

No problems at all, TIG, Gaieus, I did think it was extremely dodgy and had no intention of buying from them if they we're illegal (like they looked).

      Idiots.

      Hello all,

I am itching to try/buy SketchUp Pro but with my wedding coming up in the summer, just can't afford it. However, I have come across this website: [edited]
They seem to be selling SketchUp Pro 7 for £14.99. 😲

This simply cannot be legitimate can it?

Thanks ever so much guys, it was indeed the 'gluing' issue, thanks again, I really appreciate it, it was getting extremely frustrating!

      Thanks. πŸ˜„

P.s. TIG, where in Northumberland are you from? I love it up there, my favourite place in the UK.

    • Vertical (blue) inference not working?

      Hi there,

When loading a component into a drawing, I am trying to utilise the blue (vertical) inference so I can snap the component to the ground. Unfortunately, for some reason, it doesn't work, I can snap to red and green but not blue?

      Am I doing somethign wrong?!

      Thanks.
