    • Please can someone help reduce my file size?

I am sorry to bother you again, but I have finished my first 'proper' model and I am quite pleased with it.

HOWEVER, the model file size is huuuge and currently stands at 6MB. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I have tried everything I know of:

      • making all faces 'unique texture'
      • reducing amount of pixels via; texture > edit textured image, and then re-sizing so there are only 1-2 pixels per cm.
      • removing all extraneous lines
      • purging

But, it' still hovers around 6MB and does not budge. I'm pulling my hair out here! Can anyone tell me what I'm missing/doing wrong? I'd be eternally grateful.

      Thanks, in hope!

      Lee

P.s. For some reason my .skb files keep saving in increments, eg. 0.skb, 1.skb, 2.skb .... can anyone advise how I can change this?

Oh, I just noticed your location had such a weird name I looked it up here to find it was York. Unfortnately the link got mangled.

Ah yes, I'm a bit of a history geek and much prefer the old monikers to be honest; Caer Ebrauc, Eboracum, Jorvik, Yorke etc! ๐Ÿ˜„

Thanks very much for all the further tips and advice, I really do appreciate it. Just asking this question has opened up a few more things for me to learn and made a better modeller. Thanks.

Gaieus, thanks ever so much for the information above, it is invaluable, all makes perfect sense and easy to carry out, thank you!

Even the question I was going to ask, after re-reading your post explains all, thanks again! I really owe you a pint now!

Thanks again for the input, i'm going to start again with my model (This particular church is doign my mhead in!) and start my modelling properly now (bearing in mind image sizes etc etc etc) with a new location. I feel Much better now, I fear this first model was a bit of a ham-fisted effort!

      Thanks.

Thank you Martin, I had no idea the jpeg's size made a difference, although it is perfectly logical when you think about it! ๐Ÿ˜„

Minor comment: Components and Groups should be named. Just select and type names in the Entity Info box.

I know how to do this, will do. ๐Ÿ˜„

      @martinrinehart said:

Another minor comment: soften/smooth the edges where stone meets stone.

Major comment: 3MB? I bet you can reduce that by 90% without loss to the model.

I'm really unsure about these two though, can you shed any light on them? Especially the smoothing the edges bit. I thought that the file was big in size, but just didn't have any idea where to start. ๐Ÿ˜ž

Thanks ever so much for the comments!

    • Progress of "First" model - critique please?

      Hiya chaps,

Just wondering if you have got a spare 5 minutes to have quick look at my first attempt at modelling, when I say "first" it's not my first attempt, rather my first go at using photo texture to build a model, with a view to entering the 'Build your town' competition.

I have got to a stage with it where I can finish but before I do, I woudl like your expert opinion on if there's anything I should change? For example, I am worrried about the photo texture for the walls - as it was almost impossible to get a 'clean' shot of a particular wall (I have taken 30+ shots of the church btw and have details of it from the www: http://allsaints-northstreet.org.uk/history.html).

I am just basically looking for a constructive criticism, and don't be afraid to say it's rubbish! I want to learn!

      Cheers,

      Lee

    • Tracing over photographs, lines hiddden?!

      Hi there,

I like to correct my photo's for perspective, scale, and then trace over the photo's to create shapes.

However, I am on a different laptop today and the lines are hidden (well, they are there when I move the photo but I can't see them when drawing).

This works on my other laptop but not now, please can you help?!

      Ah ok, thank you Gaeius.

I think just referencing whatever information I use is the most practical way of getting round this potential problem then. ๐Ÿ˜„

    • Models in 3d warehouse with Metadata

      Hiya,

When adding models to the 3d warehouse, I obviously want to add as much metadata as possible about the buildings I am working on, however I am just wondering about where one stands with regard to copyright. Obvioulsy a lot of information I have gathered is from books I have read and/or the internet.

Should one use their own prose from the assembled information, or is it better to use references at the bottom of the metadata?

Just wondering how modelers have got over this problem, or If I should just ignore my concerns!?

      Thanks,

      Lee

      Ok, cheers guys.

It's just hard to know what to do for the best, when the GE images obviously aren't perfect and I want to produce the best model possible. ๐Ÿ˜„

Google prefers (and will more readily accept) models with the GE projected image, because the model blends in better.

Even though for my town in question, the GE image is almost certainly inferior to any photo texture?

      Thanks for answering.

    • Roofs: GE image or a photo texture?

      Hello guys,

Just doing a bit of forward planning....

When adding a photo texture to a roof, specifically for GE. Is it best to use a) use the GE projected image, or b) use photo texture from a photograph.

If the best solution is b) then could someone please explain how best it would be to do this? (I have sucessfully done a) a few times!).

      Many thanks!

Just wondering if it's possible to subscribe to the Daily Catchup website, rather than having to keep checking back each day to see if there's any new news or features?

I know there's a 'subscribe by email' link at the top of the page, but for me, just returns me back to the homepage.

      Cheers!

But I think that since you are modelling pubs, the owners should realize their own interests in helping you with going to the back yards and taking a couple of shots. After all, this is their free promotion on GE!
