      Hi Rich-

I wanted to clear up a misconception that I've seen a few times: LayOut issues do not directly compete with SketchUp issues for resources. LayOut has its own dedicated team! So, don't hesitate to submit LayOut requests.

      thanks,
      Marc

So...there's a dedicated team for Sk that in two years they could just do extension warehouse...

As for ideas for SK2014, I know I'll sound a bit crazy but, how about new features for the reason that Sketchup was built for: anything that can help, simplify and enhance 3D modeling, like better modeling tools, better UV mapping tools and some form for simulate other lights other than the sun, even if in any simple and basic way... Naah, please just make floating menus, more layout and bring susan back, I'm sure my models will be much better and faster with these.

    • RE: SketchUp 2014 Wishlist

      Hi Chris

I've been using Sketchup a little less in the last 1-2 years, and more 3DS Max (and Zbrush and Photoshop), and I understand your point in the viewports and agree with them even, but I think you're seeing this question (and maybe others) in the wrong way. Let me explain...

      • I also, in 3DS work, 99% of time work with just one viewport and I don't really think SK really needs that feature for what it does, but at least more viewports are really usefull when doing/testing any kind of animation, or even for just analysing results in modelling, and SK doesn't do that good enough to need it.
      • Besides viewports, you can apply the same logic to 64 bits/multicore. Example, in a project I did months ago I was having problems rendering FUR in 3DS, you see the fur is displayed as a preview in a simpler and with less hairs version, so that it can be used in real time, but at the time of render it as to be created, with the final size and quality, before starting the render itself and I couldn't fit this hair in 6Gb of RAM to even start to render the image, but after I update to 18Gb I could render it (6h total render time = 3h30 to create the geometry of the hair + 2h30 rendering the image). The calculated hair is stored at RAM (mine took ~16gb of use) as any result of things that have to be processed. Does SK needs it? No, because nothing in SK use it (maybe intersecting complex and heavy models...).

What I'm trying to say is that the SK team doesn't seem to see beyond what they already know. You shouldn't say "why do you need 64bits/multicore/viewports/GPGPU/etc if that isn't used/needed right now?" but rather "What can we do more/evolve with 64bits/multicore/viewports/GPGPU/etc?".

And one more thing, SK without basic plugins is useless for me, to the point that I'm faster modelling in 3DS than in SK, and that is saying something about SK's speed... It's beyond me why the SK Team thinks that basic stuff like welding a polyline or just push and pulling more than one face at the same time is something most casual or professionals (independent of what they do with SK) don't need so they should use a plugin, but a button for extension warehouse or for Google earth, or just Layout stuff, is more usefull for most of your Sketchup users... If Sk can't have nothing new, at least it should evolve what already have

      Best Regards

      David

P.S.: I don't think SK needs fur or viewports.

    • NEW SK Model Pack - 65 Design Furnitures

Hi Guys. Long time without posting.

I've been busy in the last times, and in one of my last computer clean-ups that I (try) to do after each project. I've re-found and gather some Sketchup models I've done for them, and put them in model pack with more than 65 models.

Most are from Design brands for furniture and some are really exotic (see attached PDF for full list). These models were made in Sketchup and to be used in Sketchup, so I normally try to find a good balance between detail and file weight. All the models are based in the real furniture measures and proportions because that's real important when planning a space, and the furniture had to be recognizable by the client even in just a image directly from Sketchup. Because large textures can make Sketchup slow and if I have to render I'll normally do it in MentalRay or Vray for 3DS Max, the materials may be too simple.

These furnitures are not super-high-poly-movie-quality models, but they can "survive" in middle to far renders, and some even close-up renders (see examples below),

Initially I was thinking in making a model pack with 8-12 models, because some models are simple (because of the design of most modern furniture), but then I remembered the work and trouble I've went through to find their measures and drawings, so maybe they can be usefull for someone here too, and just see them as a bonus πŸ˜„.

I've put the Imola Chair by Boconcept as the free model for premium users and the PDF with all the furniture can be found here and in the download for the free sample for free users.

The model pack (20$ for premium users and 25$ others) can be found here:
      http://sketchucation.com/shop/models/440-design-furniture-model-pack

I hope you guys like it and that it can help some here πŸ˜„

      Don't think so...
Sketchup won't take much use of better graphics card (or even multiple) and can't use more thatn the 4Gg of ram.
Your best option is to put everything in layers and turn off everyone that you're not using while modeling, and avoid using big texture maps and turn them off while modeling.

I can really see the passion you've put in all the details, JMJOhio.
I didn't complete understand what you wanted with the "welds" (english is not my native language), but for the belts (that by the way don't look bad) if you want a more detail and natural feeling maybe the best way to do it is trying to make a curve with lots of segments (bezier) and adjust it by hand to a more natural look and then use it to "follow me" (but you'll probably need to scale up your model first to avoid problems with very small faces). The other way is import it to other software with dynamics and just make a straight belt there subdivide it and "let" them fall with gravity simulation. But again, for me they don't look bad
      Great work

And the secret for understanding the subdivide plugins is having a good basic topology, once you have that you can predict how the model is going to turn out once you subdivide it

First thanks a lot for the kind words guys. I'm glad you like it πŸ˜„

Mitcorb - I hope so... πŸ˜„. I did the garage and robot with real measures values as reference. This is my own garage, and I went there to take photos and confirm measures a lot of times, that's why I had to make the garage bigger or the robot wouldn't fit in there (you can see that in the 2nd image from the bottom, I lost to much time on that manipulation making details that were a few pixels in size sometimes, so most probably no one would notice, so it wasn't really necessary but I had fun with it so it doesn't matter now). But the garage door is in a lower point than the top of the garage so the robot would have to get down a bit, but he's fully articulated so it should be possible (hey, in my head he can do it πŸ˜‰ ).

hellnbak - In this version he would have to found a balance point. If you see the side view (notice the smaller side view, and not the one with the gorilla scheme), his legs are rotate more to the front so I imagine that if he would do something like dig with one hand he would have to use the other hand for support and the leg from the side the digging hand would have to be more pushed to the front (or something like it) for digging with the 2 hands he would just get down on ground and spread the legs to front and sides to give him support while digging).
But to be honest, when I idealized this robot he had a pair of extra (small) legs in front that would recoil while not in use and come out when needed, but it "braked" the design and the look I was after a bit, so yeah this was one of those moments when style came first that function πŸ˜›

One again thanks for the comments and I'll try to get more images of the robot doing other things (that could be fun)

    • "AAHHH!! my brother is an evil genius!"

Hi guys. Long time without posting nothing.

Project created as a proposal for a Sketchup class/workshop for a CG school.

This image that started with this specific objective, evolved during the process to "let's-see-how-much-can-I-push-it" and trying to make it good enough to my portfolio, and then turn in it into a test subject to learn new stuff, but in the end it turn out to be an escape for me from a really tough year, my insomnia partner that made me forget everything around me.

It's a bit strange to have to "finish it", but even started to see that I was losing too much time on it in details that, likely, few will be able to see and understand what is behind (thanks for the wake up call Mauro), but I think in reality I just did not want it to finish it.

Now it's time to move to the next project, later variants may appear more "epic" (according to my friend Mauro lolol), but this time making room for others to do their version

I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching and comment

Special thanks to JoΓ£o Ramalhete (for the support, advice and hugs πŸ˜›), Mauro Ferreira (by trying to show me that everything needs "Epicness"), and Pedro Pereira (for their help and patience to put up with me)

    • RE: Who works with Sketchup? Do you freelance?

      Hi tails

I freelance using sketchup. You're right about not existing a lot SK specific work but I think that's because usually it's not specific for anything. The client will ask for images/CAD/3d models and he either doesn't care where you did it or need to know where you did it as long as you deliver in the format he asks and he can open/use it.

The most common work is images, mainly renders. Either for construction or advertising or whatever, you'll have to deliver a final high quality image that will be, most of the time, from a render engine or Photoshop, than directly from sketchup. So how you build the 3D model will be with you.

For Cad drawings the client may want simple images of the 3D model and so the ones from SK may be enough. I do the 3d model in SK and export some perspectives and then use the 3d model to help doing the CAD drawings.

The most uncommon work is being asked for specific SK 3D model. I think this may be because Sk it's so easy to use that people/companys itself can do it and so this type is more commonly asked by privates without experience in this type of software. If you're asked for other software 3d model you can build the stuff in SK, import it in that software, and do the other stuff that may be asked for the model (UVW, animation, materials etc etc). I don't have much experience in this part (sk imported 3dmeshs can have some problems in other softwares so for this it may be better to build it in the software asked) but maybe someone here can help you with that.

      Hope it helps

    • RE: 2 rendering issues?

      Hi EarthMover

I didn't say that to sound like an insult and my apologies if it sounded like.
What I meant was that everything that you do in VrayforSK can be done in VrayForMax, but the other way around it's not true. And if they both use, basically, the same "technical" language, IF YOU CAN, use the more complete version (unless you don't do big renders/complex scenes or don't need the other features missing)

I never said nothing about "one-button-does-great-render" on Vray for max...I know there's great work done in Vfsk...as there's for Vfmax, maya, maxwell, mental etc. etc. they did the model, scenes and images not the software. And, if I may say, you should had try to inform yourself better before buying any software (marketing and other people's experience can be very misleading), because there's no rewards without study, patience and hard work in this area.

    • RE: 2 rendering issues?

      Hi tomot

      For the "blotchs":

      • Blotchs in renders: too few Hsph samples; loss of detail in shadows or "flying objects": too much Interp samples; find a balance between the two. Normally a relation Hsph 75-100 to Interp 15-25 it's works for most, but it depends on the scene.

Vray it's a very powerful and adaptable render, but the SK version it's a dumbed down version (and can be useless for print work due to memory limitation). If you have a access to 3DS max with vray use it, even if you don't know much about 3DS you can use it like a studio render program. Just open the SK file in 3DS (has to be sk version 7) and change the materials (the uvs are kept), and you'll have access to other things like vraydisplacement mod, vrayfur, vray pass, etc etc. Just be careful about imported SK meshs in 3DS because it can have some "quirks" like you can't put vrayfur on it and have to create that part of the model/face in 3DS to use it (at least in 2011 version).

      Hope it helps

      Hi Allan

Really great low poly character you got there, one of the best i've seen in sketchup done based on real character.

If you allow me some coments, try to keep the good topology you have, like you have in the skull of the cow, in every parts of the model. Following shapes and muscles and keeping things fluid, this will help defining the muscles and shapes of the body easyly and avoiding strange meshs if you subdivide and shadows done by incorrect triangles (and if you will export them to other apps the mapping or animation will be better too).
please see the pictures below, just quick notes i write with my wacom, and i could be wrong since i'm seeing just one side jpg.

I also like Juke. At first i didn't like it but it started to grow on me. The back resulted extremly well when you see it live, the front i just have doubts about the lighs on top. Then there's little details in design I reaaly like and think as a breath of fresh air in the automotive design, like in the interior the gear part is based on a motorcycle body (see the picture below).

About the new beetle, I think it's better than the previous speccialy in the interior (i couldn't seat in the back without my head touching the roof and it was too small inside for it's exterior size and i'm just 1.83m tall). The problem for VW, at least in Europe, is that beetle it's going to run against other small revival-design-premium-cars like Mini, Fiat 500, Alfa Romeo Mito, Citroen DS3 and even Nissan Juke, and the problem here (besides price) it that design wise any of them have more appeal (the interiors in the new beetle are even the same that other VW with a litle more shiny stuff), for me Alfa Romeo Mito speccially, but i'm a sucker for Italian design πŸ˜› ). If you think about it, it's amazing how the VW manage to take away some of the charm in the beetle and make it a more "normal" car.

About the Macs beeing more to girls: the company i'm on right now has 9 computers for graphic work related stuff - 4 of them are Mac with 30 inch screen that the graphic designers use, and i'm on workstation with dual screen setup with 27 inch screen that can run laps around the macs but there's not one single day that i don't drool over this mac screens.
Besides the colour and contrast beein way better that this samsungs, that i honestly don't care when i look at them, right now i'm imagining how good they would look i'm my home because they really are a beauty. So if that's true i guess i may have something of girl on me...ha ha ha
