LOX: Several comments for you to help with your problem: Your use of layers is not correct. SU uses layers for visibility control and not geometry isolation like cad programs. Enter the edit context of a component and select say a line( primitive geo.) the entity info should report layer 0. You have assigned them to other than layer 0 and IMHO contributed to some of the selection problems you are having. I consider this make play change. To correct select ,say for example, the wall layer and then the - and then the option to move to the default layer, then recreate that layer, then with the entity info open select each of those components and now assign the component to the wall layer, repeat for the rest of wall and other components; You should be aware I think there is a bug in SU8 and 2013 as reported here. http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/sketchup/technical-problems/SX9LgRqek1c. If you enter the edit context of a component make sure the you place the drawing axis correctly because it can skew depending on how you have the component axis set. I think that caused some model errors for you. Hope this not an artifact from my set up. Moving the model back should be done although I cannot verify the same problem as you unless I regress back to SU7.1+ ,but it should be done because of SU 32 bit floating point and the associated calculation precisions inaccuracy with the large numbers. The Su component definition is invariant under, move, rotate, scale operations so you could make almost all the walls 1 component. Not necessary but would reduce model size a little. Making the "hanger" all 1 group with nested components would also help but not necessary

@keyaren said: ...however i have come across this name GAIEUS all over the google search results. Ah well, that will be me then - so I feel obliged to answer (or at least try) Check out this plugin: http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32289 You can add different co-ordinates (in different systems) then if you wish, you can Position your camera (with a custom camera height - like that of the eye height of a person) and it will immediately turn into the Look around tool with which you can aim at your turbine, maybe create a Scene (to sort of "save" that view) and at the end, export images. For the final image to be shown as a grid of TIN, you can turn on hidden geometry under the View menu and display your model in monochrome (or hidden line) face style. OR unlock thee GE Terrain then unsoften it (so that its grid becomes visible) and delete the GE image (to show it with the default front face colour while the rest of the model can be textured)

Some good suggestions, thank you all very much. I will try following up to see what works best in my situation, although I feel I will end up with a laser level and quite a few batens hammered into the ground to pick up levels from.

I was troubling with the same issue, but I've found that it was not arise from driver update. By erasing SectionCutFace plugin the problem was resolved. You may try to examine what plugin cause this.

His "Click on the File Menu and Crash" reminded me of a similar report we got from Dan Rathbun. Turns out it is the exact same problem. (This is PC only from what we have seen) There are a small amount of users who are crashing when they click on the File Menu. So far the culprit has been the .fbx exporter. The fix is to find your SketchUp installation folder and then go to the Exporters folder. Remove the file called skp2fbx.dll. Then try to use SU again. That should be a temporary fix. If you are an .fbx user, we are working on a more permanent real solution. I supposed you could try to export from a different machine if possible. From what we've seen, this is limited to XP SP3, and it isn't very common even on those machines. But if you see anyone around the forum complaining that SU crashes a lot, and its always when they click on the file menu, this is probably the reason. Thanks Dave for helping troubleshoot this. I'll let everyone know when we get a fix in place. If anyone else is seeing this issue, I'd like to know about it so we can get their system info and see if they can help test any potential fixes. Thanks! Chris

SketchUp/OpenGL can't cope with very large distances, it's designed for nothing much bigger than groups of buildings [conversely very small sizes have issues too]. You will get inaccuracies, 'clipping planes' and all manner of problems otherwise. I assume you are importing CAD data ? The Import dialog's Options let you choose to ignore the CAD origin, and it will then place the imported geometry inside a component located at the SKP origin - not miles away. If there is one common 'point' in the CAD and SKP you can then easily Move that component and snap it into place [then lock it]. Your issues might not be over... If the CAD file contains blocks that become components when imported there is no issue if the blocks origin is placed near its geometry, but if the block's origin is at the CAD origin and the geometry miles away then similar clipping issues etc can still happen... to fix it explode these groups, or if you want to keep the separation select it and use the context-menu 'change-axes' to relocate the component's axes near its geometry - you can see components' axes if you set it under Model Info. Another rarer glitch is with blocks imported into the CAD file, initially using the wrong units, that are then scaled down by say 1/1000 in the CAD file, rather than their geometry scaled down by that, so when they become SKP components they are actually in the database 1000x bigger that expected, so a CAD-house-block >> SKP-house-component that measures 10m in the model might actually be 10km inside its definition ! To fix that you can rescale the definition in the context-menu...

@dave r said: I was in the process of making a graphic example. I'll post it anyway. <!-- ia1 -->Ovoid Perspective.png<!-- ia1 -->[/attachment:3hulq9iz] <!-- ia0 -->Ovoid Parallel.png<!-- ia0 -->[/attachment:3hulq9iz] As you can see, it would be much easier to select all of the geometry for half of the shape or any other amount in the second view than in the first. Definitely. And I admit, that's part of what was originally giving me trouble when I initially tried this. Much appreciated.

@unknownuser said: but not twist and 'follow' the cap in a fluid real time way as the images seem to suggest you have done. It's just 2 "Quicklathe" one by one ! One first : decrease one side Then retake the little section and make another Quicklathe in another direction decrease one side Then retake the little section etc...if you want more than 2 You can also Move / Scale decrease + move also on the Z ! Rotate the section can make overlaps so carreful with rotation! A very funny Plugin!

Might be your system limiting your file size. I get up to 100 meg files and hear of others getting bigger. but depends on your system. 2013 seems to be more stable and perform better, can't say I've worked on any large models yet.

It does give some more insight to some of the technical aspects of SketchUp - why things behave the way they do.
