I have worked with AutoCad Architecture since 1994. I have been working with Sketchup Pro for 3D models only for a year. I like the links posted on how to use Layout. Think I will finally be able to abandon Autodesk..after I practice some. I love SketchUp. I like AutoCad for some things...I used to model in 3D, but have not done so ever since I got into SketchUp...I think everyone ought to leave Autodesk due to their non-cooperation, and lack of improvement over the years.

TIG gets the points! I just didn't know what the sketchup word for this was. I will be using his plugin I think, as I want to call it from code (which you can't with native offset) and some of my shapes are a bit crazy. Thanks to you both for your help!

It might help with your orientation and sense of scale if you use one of the templates that have ground, sky and a person in it.

@eric80 said: HI so yes the regular text works, in fact it is right side up but the 3D text is upside down!!! how's that happen? hey eric, there are a number of possibilities of what's going on but it's hard to guide you in the proper direction without knowing the exact orientation of your model and text. you can attach a .skp here which other members can view and help sort out your issues much more quickly.. when you're replying to a post, look beneath the reply window and you'll see an 'upload attachment' tab.. use that so we can see the problem without the need for these pesky words

@tig said: ...then revert to the Make version if you decide not to buy it. and if used for non-commercial purposes only. An upgrade from a non-legal license of SUP7 to SUP13 is obviously not possible, i.e. a full new license of SUP13 needs to be bought in this case. Norbert

I doubt you over stepped SketchUp's abilities but possible those of your computer. It might be that you are running a bit before you've really learned to walk. There are good strategies to deal with the sort of stuff you are doing and ways to make it less work than it probably is for you right now. Good housekeeping methods are a prime thing here. You mentioned that you are planning to do some renders. While you are cleaning up your models, make sure you don't have any exposed back faces. Some rendering applications won't render them even if they have materials applied to them. If that's the situation in your model, you might find it very frustrating so cleaning up your models in advance will help reduce that, too. It sounds like you are looking at this as a learning experience so that's a good thing. Keep plugging.

@unknownuser said: Looking great Aaron. Just a couple thoughts 1.it would be great to be able to insert multi-sash windows as well. 2.adjustable trim configurations 3.adjustable stile and rails. Also, when you are forming floors and walls and roof lines are they automatically set into separate groups? This would be great for layer control. Great work! Hi Nick, Thanks for the input! To address your questions directly: We do plan on getting different window types in the future. This first release we added the VERY simple tool of adding what we call dividers. These can be used to represent sashes, mullions.... whatever! We do allow the trim to be adjusted for width, at this point. I would love to see the kinds of controls you would be interested in. Please let me know what you think would be useful. Again, in the future releases we want to add this, please send me your thoughts on inputting these items. Thanks for the kind words! Hopefully I can get additional input and amp doors and windows way-up in the next release! Thanks! Aaron

Hello Dave @dave r said: <!-- ia3 -->jpp.png<!-- ia3 -->[/attachment:3cdzjik2] A question for you, Bruce. What would your expectation be for the way these corners get handled? They don't appear to be correctly done although I don't fault the tool. It appears that JPP did what it was asked to do. %(#0000FF)[I would expect the plugin to at lease read my mind and perform the operation correctly. I agree its a difficult one. Perhaps various corner operations can be made as an option to the plugins. Its not until you stop and think of exactly what and how the operations performs that the complexity is revealed. My clients think that I just tap the keyboard a few times and the compute generates the building drawings.] <!-- ia2 -->jpp2.png<!-- ia2 -->[/attachment:3cdzjik2] This seems more correct to me although the joint between the angled portions and the horizontal part, although correct for what JPP is supposed to do, is probably not the way it would be built in real life. The horizontal and angled surfaces have been extruded the same amount so to join them you would have to miter them at half the angle between which is exactly what JPP did. <!-- ia1 -->jpp3.png<!-- ia1 -->[/attachment:3cdzjik2] Maybe this is better? I expect that no matter what modifications were made to JPP or Shell, there'll always be geometry that will be problematic. There will always be some things that require the judgement of the user. Agreed, I am just pleased that someone has thought about this more than i and provided a plugin that makes my life easier. All the best

I have what I want now in the third image. Before you pointed me in the direction of the foreground photo checkbox, I couldn't find a way to get my modification displayed over the top of the photo. Now I can. Thanks for your help. Julian

HI, you were correct in that I had to complete my lines. I was able to fix it up without redrawing. thanks @dave r said: Eric, in a nutshell, making a component (or group) of the walls is akin to wrapping them up in Saran wrap. You can see them but the "wrapper" protects them from being modified and protects other geometry from being affected by that geometry inside the wrapper. If you do need to make changes to the contents of the component/group, you open it for editing and do your thing. Think adding a slice of cheese to a sandwich wrapped in the cling wrap. It may actually be better to start over in this case. You have some parallel nearly coincident lines in a few places. Shoot for a single face for all connected walls. No lines crossing from one side of the wall to the other. If you plan to make the walls 3D at some point, this will make it a lot easier. It'll go faster next time, too.

Because the back and front of the chair is a curved surface, and is made from 6 separate faces (seat consists of two faces), you will need to map the texture across them. This should help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHsRRLCAOm8 Another thing I noticed with this model is that if you go to edit-->unhide-->all a centre line up the middle of the back of the chair appears. This is what is making it so the two halves select separately. If you right click on this centre line and soften it (or delete it) then turn off the hidden geometry you can then select the back of the chair as a single face which will assist in mapping the texture over it in one go. Hope this helps.
