    • RE: Placing a building in a photo

I have what I want now in the third image. Before you pointed me in the direction of the foreground photo checkbox, I couldn't find a way to get my modification displayed over the top of the photo. Now I can. Thanks for your help.

How about a screen shot or something?

Here are a) the original match photo (model off), b) the same scene with the foreground photo opacity set to zero and c) the foreground image checkbox unchecked.

Thanks very much. It seems it's the foreground image checkbox I needed. Putting the slider to zero removes the foreground image but the model has no faces shaded or textured. Only by unchecking to box, does the model appear.

    • Placing a building in a photo

What's the best way to place a building model in a photo? I have a photo which includes a building I am making some alterations to. I have made a model of the building using match photo but I can't find a way to overlay the modified building back on the photo.

If I return to the match photo scene, the modified building is only shown in outline. It seems the matched photo is "in front" of all model textures.

      Thanks for any suggestions.

Do you have something at a long distance from the origin? Hit Zoom Extents with shadows off and show us a screen shot.

Zooming to extents fills the window with the building. With shadows on, the building disappears completely, but switching shadows off brings it back. So, nothing at a long distance from the origin.

Have you checked the other reasons for clipping?

Thanks, I have checked those suggestions. My scale is life size for the building, i.e. not small. It's on the origin and the field of view is the default camera field of view (35deg). All the 3D elements were created in SU and not imported.

      Thanks. Julian

    • Clipping with shadows

I have just given my model a location and have switched on shadows. However, at certain times of day and months of the year, the model is clipped. As I slide the time of day slider, the clipping changes.

In the pictures attached you can see that at 10:44am the model is clipped and at 10:53am, it isn't. If I switch shadows off, the model is no longer clipped, but it does rather limit the usefulness of being able to show sun angles.

Sketchup 8.0.16845 Mac. Perspective is on.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

    • RE: Components visible through each other

Thanks. It's always helpful to know the underlying reasons. I'll try exporting to a 2D image at high resolution when I need to print.

    • RE: Components visible through each other

      Bob,

Thanks for the solution although it seems a bit labour intensive for a large model. Does anyone know why this happens? Is it a bug or does the feature have some use?

Thanks anyway for the answer. I appreciate it.

    • Components visible through each other

I am creating some models with components and I've noticed that at certain levels of magnification, I can see the edges of some components even though there are other components in the way. In the attached model, there is a board component (1 cm thick) with some planks (studs) behind it. If I zoom out from the model, I can see lines across the board corresponding to the planks underneath.

I can even select components that are hidden by clicking on these lines.

This seems to me very undesirable. I can't even put a texture on the surface and hide what's behind. I don't want the hidden structure to be visible on the surface.

The behaviour is the same on a PC and Mac. It is very noticeable in Print too. Exporting to a JPG has the effect but very slightly.

Am I missing something here? Is there a setting that will turn off this "feature"? Hiding all edges is not an option.

      Thanks for any help.
