I'd like to see something similar...

And I'd like to see PDF export that does not include any pages that you have turned off with the 'include in presentation' toggle. Maybe add that to the layers, and get it to work for screen presentations as well as anything you print / export.

I know this is an old post, but Sketchup 2015 didn't have this feature, so I am going to bump!

If Layout can be ran in two instances, like Sketchup, then you just need to put one instance to produce renders and work out your files in the other instance. Make sure you set your processors affinity in Task Manager if it is the case.

I am not sure if I understand you, or if you haven't quite understood me! If you can indeed run LayOut in two instances with a PC, that sounds very useful (I am Mac only at the moment).

In the picture below, it illustrates what I am wanting to achieve:
    Render while you work

The idea being that you can work away on other parts of the drawings while the individual views update. It's a technical challenge for the Sketchup team, which I am sure can be solved, and the rewards are higher levels of productivity for us LayOut users whose models (and ambitions) are getting bigger.

No need to be embarrassed. There are a lot of things that might not be obvious at first.

Do spend some time poking around in menus and sub menus as well as the windows in the tray on the right side. You'll find there's a lot of options.

    Don't hesitate to ask questions.

    Thank Dave R,
Your suggestion was quite helpful. I imported floor plans from autocad of massive structure which was highly detailed and when i inserted it into LO I used hybrid render. There were 3 floor levels each on a seperate page. I just left it and after hours of waiting each page opened eventually and I changed the render setting..Now I'm able to flick through my pages with no problems....Thanks alot and sorry for taking long to reply

BTW, in LayOut 2016 we introduced the option to choose JPG compression for images in PDF export from LayOut.

    Thanks,

I know this will sound strange but go into the presences window in SketchUp and chane the OpenGL settings. Try turning Hardware accretion off. Quit and reopen LayOut. Then rerender the viewport and see if it fixes the problem.

    Which version of LayOut?

Why don't you complete your profile so that question doesn't need to be asked?

    You're quite welcome.

Indeed it should be layers before pages when setting up a template. Also, even though layer order isn't important in SketchUp, it is in LayOut. If you want things like text to appear over SketchUp viewports, but the text layers higher in the list than the viewports. I have layers for borders and title blocks and such at the bottom of the list because I rarely need to do anything with them or I change them once at the beginning of a project and don't need them again. That way those layers aren't in the way when I'm going through the stack later. I also have a couple of templates for large paper that will get folded. I drew out fold lines and put them on a layer that is visible when I start but gets turned off before exporting. They help me avoid placing important information on the creases. These layers mostly remain locked so they can't be modified, too. Everything else is higher in the stack.

    Interesting topic!

I prefer to use layout only for adding texts and annotations. Everything else, including hatches and dimensions, is done in SketchUp. SketchUp is more fast, more reliable, more fun and the 3d model can be opened by the client as well.

Some elements are only modeled in 3d as a simple volume and it's details are added in 2d in the sectioncut (ventilation duct, a timber framed wall).

Plugins that make the process more easy are:

...pdf has missing lines. Submited to trimble...

Could be Adobe need a kick up the rear too. I see this problem on a regular basis when exporting PDFs containing images from plenty of other applications too - e.g. CorelDraw, MS Publisher, MS Word, etc...

I wasn't aware of that... Thanks for the info. But now the problem is even greater. What format would one use for this sharing of drawings between architect, client, contractor?

    SVG?

On a side note, I also noticed that if I import the pdf to Gimp and print from there, the problem persists...

thanks for reply, yip found the scale tool.
Wouldnt it be great if you could scale scrapbook objects on import to drawings...eg 1:1 down to 1:10 or 1:20?

    In Layout?

With circles and lines and the text tool? Try taking a look at the symbols in the scrapbooks tray... they seem very much like the ones in this example.

Post an example LayOut file that shows this.

Is this leader text you've added in the SketchUp file or labels you've added in LayOut? If it is the latter, the best thing to do is put the labels on a layer higher in the list than the viewports.

    Hi Dave,

I tried your method of putting the text layer higher and it works! Thanks Dave, you save my day.

Thank you again, I really appreciate your assistance 😍

You can change the paper size under File>Document SetUp>Paper. As dedmin alludes, the content won't get scaled with the paper size change. If you go from A2 to A1, you'll find the content is stuffed into the upper left corner still fitting into the space of the A2 sheet. You can only set one sheet size per LayOut file. If you need more than one sheet size you'll need to split it into more than one LO project. You can combine PDFs if needed in Acrobat or some other applications.

make a copy of the drawing.
relink the model in the copy.
delete the viewports you do not want in the original.
copy and paste the viewports from the copy into the original.

not elegant, but it should update when you change the models.
