Hey guys I am desperate for very high resolution/quality satellite maps, I use Placemaker and I also use Nearmap but the resolution is not that great, I have tried using AI to upscale but that too does not really solve my issues. Is there another solution?

I've run into the same problem Chris has when I've been trying to help others get their models straightened out. I agree that forcing geometry to reside on Layer 0 makes much sense. pbacot, when I am teaching new SketchUp users about components and groups, I use an analogy to try to explain how they keep geometry separated. Think of a sandwich. A couple of pieces of bread and some stuff in between. Lay a great big dill pickle on top and the juice soaks into the bread changing the sandwich. Wrap the sandwich in cling wrap and the pickle juice can't soak into the bread. Assigning a layer to a component or group effectively turns that cling wrap into some of that new "cloaking device" fabric. Unchecking the visibility box turns on the cloaking device. The geometry remains where it is though on Layer 0. It's kind of a lame but it seems to get the point across.

So far it looks that only some users with nVidia graphics cards gets the best results. I got an ATI Radeon 9800 on my Ubuntu box and as with the rest of the ATI users SU on Wine is no go. I have an 8800GT and 6800GT on my main rig, but I only run Vista on that.

@remus said: xbjllb, the bug we're talking about is when you have a camera position mid animation that passes through shadows. It messes them up, to put it bluntly. What your describing sounds somewhat different. Though his solution could have some merit!!!

I like to use the arc, freehand, and line commands for tracing things! This works real well when you need to do a company logo but you don't the text they used to create it!

thats what I tried to do. perhaps I should learn tools before using them I was not able to snap the control points of a bezier curve precisely to the camera position points. perhaps I should have closer look at the tools provided by fredo. will let you know, if I have success with that. [Edit] ok, as far as I understand it, it is only possible to draw these bezier curves on a plane, but not in 3 dimensional space. so it doesn't work for me when I try to connect camera-positions that differ in height. please correct me, if I am wrong (I would very much like being wrong on this matter ) [/Edit]

I am having this same issue, and I need to print on 36x48 for a presentation!!! The highest I can get it to export is 2,600, and that's with anti-alias turned off. I'm running SketchUp Pro on a Pentium 4 running at 3 GHZ, w/ 4 GB of RAM. My only guess is that it could be the video card, but its an ATI FireGL V3400 w/ 128 MB. Any ideas?

Hi Ken, well, to my best knowledge construction geometry consists of points and lines (infinite and finite). I don't know what these ruby gurus might come up with (nowadays you dare not say NO to anything) but I don't think there is such a geometry as "construction face". You could use a simple face however put on a certain layer (where you could also put all your construction geometry as well) and control its visibility. Make sure to group that face though otherwse it will interact with other geometry.

Hi Susan, hi folks. Dont forget that you can Orbit, pan and zoom in the middle of a dimensionning operation to force SU to use a plane instead of another. See this SU file for ideas. Dimensions positionning.skp

I haven't read all the posts in the other thread, but I'd recommend the component approach. Just break your model into components and then save each component out to its own file. Then you can work on the individual files, and update them back into main model later on. This also allows for alternative versions of specific elements since you can have multiple files for any component. Then on top of this if smaller files are slow follow guidelines by others about having shadows off, not show textures, outliner closed, etc.

Another way to sort the textures out natively is to turn on hidden geometry (view->hidden geometry) then sample the texture on the main face and paint it on to every other face. Probably a lot easier to use the UV plugin for anything with lots of faces though, as painting every face can get a bit boring.

Thanks so much for the replies. Guidelines are perfect, I use them in my CAD package all the time. What a great feature. I'll try all this, and especially get a lot more experienced with components, groups and layers. Keith

i stuggle with this as well. I do a lot of site modeling that requires trees and I like to use 2D cllips as often possible, but for aerial views, I kinda need 3D trees, and the good ones are so High poly. I guess I should play around with Proxies more to simplify and only turn on the biggies when it comes time to render or something, but Any other hints to manage the file would be grateful. Ps. I havne't done it yet, but I have the link to the 3D basecamp workshop on this. I oughtta listen to it. . .. I wasn't invited, you know. . .

Interesting about the directory. Basically it's an animation that may very well be used promotionally to show off the architects design via his website. I would think that would make a good enough candidate to get ahold of ol' Neil and maybe spot him a couple bucks. Anyone got his number? I seem to have lost it somehow. Seriously though, anyone have any idea on how to actually go about paying the royalties then or perhaps to get my paws on this directory? If I find out I'll report back but if anyone has any clues or links they're appreciated. -Brodie PS. too bad about that lady w/ the kid on youtube. too bad she got off scott-free that is. Posting videos of your kids on youtube should be a felony under the People's Right to Not Make me Gag Act 1997 established by the quasi-famous Gray vs. America's Funniest Home Videos case.

Thats always been my solution too. I really like setting up 2 scenes pretty close to one another and put a long transition time on them. So over like 15 seconds the camera only moves a little bit. Then make of few of these slow panning/zooming/FOV Changing scenes. Take them into a movie editor and do a crossfade on them. Makes for some really nice, upscale feeling, video work. Chris

I "accidently" solved it by clicking zoom all extents before your reply, but in the link you send i found this. Another situation that can cause clipping is when the Perspective camera mode is turned off. In that case, click the "Zoom Extents" button (it looks like a magnifying glass with four red arrows pointing outward). The camera zooms out to display the entire model, and the clipping is eliminated. So you are totally right! Thanks a lot
