For a studio environment you can use an HDRI with a studio image. There is also the vray express installer which has studio environments for Sketchup. It gives you components with standard light setups and studiomodels. You can find it in the download section on the chaosgroup website (you have to log in). For some free HDRIs you can google. I have found this one.. http://zbyg.deviantart.com/art/HDRi-Pack-2-103458406 Maybe there's something for you in it.

Thanks a ton for enlightening me about something sooooooooo amazing that I never knew! I was blown away by such HDRI envrinments! Seriously WOWWWWW!
I'll surely try them out and post the renders here. I don't have have appropriate words to express my excitement and gratitude for this link. Thank you so much.
You can make the sun invisible and under the options turn off the affect specular. I'm on Vray 3.4 and I don't remember how it was in 2.0. Maybe something similar..

I'm only a novice at Vray, but it seems that the only way to get a numerical value for the roughness is to create a new "Vray material" from scratch. Here's the manual description of how to control it:
https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VRAY2SKETCHUP/VRayMtl#VRayMtl-Diffuse
Reverse question - is there a way to exclude 100% transparent material from the material ID render ? Say I have a texture of a tree where the foliage is opaque and an alpha channel masks what's not needed. Material ID still considers the transparent surface as a different material.
When a lot of objects are in background, selection is not optimal.
Thanks

I would do this using Curviloft by Fredo. That way you can easily control all the cross sections, contours etc and let the plugin do the work for you.

Or maybe use a blend material? With material A being the tile material and the B material a procedural noise for instance. Haven't experimented with it yet.
Best,
Hi, what are your settings for the background? Is it from the vray sun or do you use a domelight for the background? If you use a domelight make sure in the options to check the reflection on.

How do I enable material override?
In your Vray options editor - There's a checkbox in the "Global Switches" section
Oh! I see. Thanks for the useful tip!

Is there no other way to make the 2013 do as I want? Or do I need to try again with a higher version of sk?
with a scene of nearly 200MB, I don't see any easy way around the memory issue. Can you try installing 2016 Make version and only vray 2.0 for SU and see how it goes. I would completely uninstall vray before starting on the new install.
The little "m" button stands for editing the map of that item. Besides, I found that you don't have to turn the whole sun off, making the whole result dark. You onlt have to get inside the sun map, and turn off shadow
