1- The newest version of dwg we support is 2007. When you save down to 2007 in civil 3d it strips out the google earth snapshot entity because its "unsupported". 2010 dwg might support geolocation but we can't import it... 2 - Civil 3d uses the same com api that sketchup uses. I think you get the exact same quality that you currently get in SU. Zooming in closer is the only way i know of to increase the resolution of the terrain. hope this helps. Simone.

Thanks Gai, for replying. Sounds like I'll make this a request for the next release . Ever since the last couple releases of GE, it seems the cameras translations (at least for me) of SU scenes to GE have been on steroids and require too much adjusting in GE. IMHO this is too inconvenient to be practical. John

Well, any way we are looking at this,it's very interesting. I have never seen such a negative image on a GE model (oh well, I could do it intentionally of course but unless you did it so, too, it is quite unique). And forget the rant about the link, please. Sorry; I'm just a bit tired.

Well, I'm not sure what model you downloaded from the Warehouse but my guess would be this (from your description) you had a model already georeferenced somewhere (say location A) you imported another model with a different geolocation (location B) SU aske you if you want to change your (original) location (A) to the new one (B) and you answered yes. Try with "NO" and see what happens. As for the GE Subforum; you are (this topic is) in it at the moment.

That model is very "heavy" I think the photo textures are making it very slow. You should be able to move it, try deleting the Google earth layers that came with it. (both layers) to lighten the model. You will need to right click and unlock them, delete, then purge the model to get rid of the textures. You should be able to move it, for some reason that model is very slow to work with. I hope this helps.

Cool, Jason, and thanks for coming back with the good news. Now get your students to model the whole town and soon you all will be famous! (At least we would do our best )

Also, probably notable that the free version of SU 6 (for some reason Windows only) doesn't have the Location tab at all in Model info.

Except of image compression and geometry compression, I also noticed that 3d-layer models are very different from kmz (via download link in 3dwh), or maybe they are no kmz at all. When you load a very large model as kmz-file, the complete geometry appears first, and then step after step, the complete textures are loaded. When viewing a 3d-layer model, geometry and textures load simultaneously from low detail to high detail. This is similar to progressive file compression as it is available in some graphics programs for jpg, png. Also, there seems to be something like mip-mapping, textures of different resolution are displayed according to the distance of the viewer. Something that made me wonder is that a complex model loads faster from 3d-layer than kmz, but has less performance than the kmz model when orbiting around it. I experienced this for http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=4dbc22f87450a7b96f8be2f10eeff72d

my fifth building, Espaço CIEE, located at 3rd Perimetral Avenue, Porto Alegre. You can two of my other buildings (Mercado Publico and IPASE) at the distance, a few km away, in the right. Hm... That may happen. I only have one model like that but I haven't used that link so far since the rejection was correct and I hadn't even uploaded that model for inclusion but as a test (as I also mentioned in the description field).

Thanks for the answer. As you confirmed my assumption I'm almost sure, the the number with "Show nested components" checked is the right one.

Hi MGE, Unfortunately I doubt that you can access the 3D content streaming from GE servers AND not uploaded into the 3D Warehouse - which is generally the case with this "grey box content".

I uninstalled GE and cleaned all remains of it. Then I reinstalled the same version (4.3): the problem was not solved. Now I installed GE 5 and the left side of the model is only a little floating (it was really bad before, four times as much). So I will tweak the terrain and accept it. Thanks very much!

Ward, I'm glad that hlped. My model of Leominster, Herefordshire, is coming along. I think there are now about30 buildings accepted in GE with at least that many either waiting in the cue on 3DW or taking up space on my hard disk. Tom

Once the models are submitted, the QA Team decides by quality. Even if there's already an accepted model on the "official" 3D Layer in GE, whenever there is a better model, there's a chance that they replace the old one.

Just in case anybody else is having problems with this, I found out something else: Even if the Upload button is gray, after I've filled in all the boxes, I go back to the Title box, click in it and hit the return key. Presto, the Upload button turns black and the upload works. Tom

Fine. This is also why I always group a GE model once I'm done with it. It's easier to move the whole thing as a single entity rather than making sure to select all before adjusting it to the Terrain.

Hi Nicholas, What GE version are you using, also could you give links to the files (or upload them here)? This is not an every day use of SU/GE so I doubt that anyone would have an answer from their sleeves therefore the source files would be very helpful.
