      Hello,

I am new to sketchup and am having a spot of difficulty. I'm using SU7 and am trying to add color on a Google Earth image. So I go back to Google Earth, save an image of my location, import and click "use as texture". This gives me no cursor in SU7, it's a circle with a line thru it. Appreciate any assistance... thx so much.......

Hi Joy (and glad you found the way to register - anyway, I have already answered your email).

So your problem is that you can only apply a "freshly imported" image (as texture) only on a single face while the GE snapshot is a group (not to speak about the fact that it's even locked). That "forbidden" tooltip indicates an action you cannot do with a tool at the moment, in a certain situation in other cases in SU, too.

The solution would be to right click the group > Unlock then right click again and either explode or edit to be able to apply the image onto the face BUT in your particular case there's a better solution; reload the B&W image with the colour image. There is a longer discussion about the method here (in the SU & GE Subforum) and although eventually it's about using that projected image on a roof, the initial steps will be the same.

Welcome to SCF by the way.

Ah yes, and I'm also moving your topic into that "Google Earth" subforum if you don't mind.

          Gai,

Hi & thank you for your assistance. I've gotten the color onto my model now.

I've another question about importing a model from the 3D warehouse. I wanted the Foothills solar parking array, clicked download, and received a message "same location or reposition" or something to that nature. I said reposition. It took so long, I thought it didn't work & started scouring the forums again. It worked, except it's at the Foothills location, which does me no good at my location! Any suggestions? thx!

You mentioned the Google Earth forum? Where, plz, is it located? thx....

I'll be modeling the buildings of the parking lots I'm doing and checked out the parameters already to ensure they get accepted. And I really like the feature that I can add them as 3D onto my blog. πŸŽ‰ Ok, back to learning SketchUp7!

Well, I'm not sure what model you downloaded from the Warehouse but my guess would be this (from your description)

            • you had a model already georeferenced somewhere (say location A)
            • you imported another model with a different geolocation (location B)
            • SU aske you if you want to change your (original) location (A) to the new one (B) and you answered yes.
Try with "NO" and see what happens.
As for the GE Subforum; you are (this topic is) in it at the moment. πŸ˜‰
