Has anyone figured out how to import the 3D "photorealistic" data from Google Earth into a local Sketchup Model (like geo-locating with the 3d trees and buildings... not just the terrain)?

If materials are not important and you are using Windows, you could try the mesh importer from the Plugin Store. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It doesn't matter what happens to Google Earth as far as SketchUp 8 is concerned since Add Location hasn't worked for nearly a year and Google hasn't accepted Sketchup models for GE for a long time. Since SU2014, SketchUp hasn't used Google Earth at all. It gets locations from Google Maps instead. http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/3000177

it seem Google Maps changed something and you need to enter decimal values now... there's a few threads a the SketchUp Forum... john

@topofsteel said: I have read through several old threads concerning this, but the links to outside sites/scripts were broken. I am going through the process of moving the selection box and grabbing terrain over and over again to get an acceptable resolution. I am looking for a way to automate that process. Possibly with a nested for loop moving the selection box incrementally. I have programming experience but i'm new to Ruby. Are there any similar scripts, starting points or other solutions? Thanks. to topofsteel: I have been manipulating GE terrains via Sketchup for many years. My purpose is to create contour slices, color them and end up with a color-graded contour map. It works very well - 99% automated, but only once the original terrains are manually imported - and even then, problems can arise if the imported terrains don't overlap correctly. I have tried to intercept the Sketchup "Add more imagery" menu option. I have a partial result, which means I can begin to "talk" to the GE map server, but then that communication link fails... obviously, I don't have the correct classes/methods available in my context... Any thoughts or experiences you (or anybody else) might have on this subject area are more than welcome.

Does anyone know how the Model Translation Attributes affect the eventual location in Google Earth? Im trying to get code to geolocate a model too however just entering a longitude and latitude manually in sketch up is not working. Im getting the long and lat from a place mark in Google Earth but when I put those values in the Sketchup model manually the model is placed far away from that place. [Edit: My problem was not converting from the degrees, minutes and seconds format in Google Earth to the decimal format used by Sketchup. e.g. https://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/degrees-minutes-seconds-tofrom-decimal-degrees] Im still interested to know the purpose of these attributes i.e. model.set_attribute key, "ModelTranslationX" , -12901579.2256146 model.set_attribute key, "ModelTranslationY" , -214086056.635273 Thanks... this has been covered before, I wish the admins would make a sticky of it... http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15%26amp;t=62489 The main reason, as I understand it, for this is because Trimble acquired Sketchup from Google, part of the deal was support from Google for a limited time for features introduced under their ownership. Since Google Earth is not a Trimble product further development and linking to the brand doesn't work. That period has passed and, as such, so is the linked functionality. Have you tried Google Earth Pro (it's free now, by the way) to see if you can get the info you normally imported automatically? Hopefully you don't use MS XP anymore, MS stopped support for it, that doesn't mean that MS is a bad company, just that it is a legacy software that doesn't warrant support any longer.

A DAE Collada file contains the geometry data. When appropriate, there is also a folder of the texture images. A KMZ is a re-suffixed ZIP file. this contains a doc.KML file [used to interpret the other data for GE's purposes], and a subfolder named 'models' containing a very similar DAE file, and an images-subfolder [although the image file-names differ from a vanilla DAE] etc. So if you extracted the compressed KMZ's contents it'd actually be slightly larger than a plain DAE and its images. If the client now wants DAE files, then when they are uncompressed that's what they'll get - bigger files. For 'transmission purposes' you could ZIP the DAE and its images-folder - then it'd be about the same size as the equivalent KMZ... Of course they would need to extract the files to use them in their alternative 'Cesium' app and convert them into its 'glTF' format data - with GE the KMZ's contents are extracted 'behind the scenes', but it still happens ! I also see that there is a KML to CZML converter https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/cesium-dev/kHtl6MXvEFY

hi is there a way to understand how and whether GE casts and receives shadows? In my model, I see GE terrain is shaded, but shadows from buildings are flat and do not conform to the terrain. Moreover, terrain below the 0,0,0 point does not receive shadows - flat or otherwise. Moving the entire model above the 0,0,0 point (unlocking the terrain) results in nothing receiving or casting shadows.. not even building parts on each other. I tried exploding the terrain, intersecting it with the model, .. to no avail. Any thoughts? thanks

People complain about Sketchups texture mapping process....they should give UDK a try. Just combine all the fragmented google pieces and "render to texture"....easy! Here are a couple of links to get you started. http://www.worldofleveldesign.com/categories/udk/udk-import-custom-textures.php https://forums.epicgames.com/threads/918963-Import-google-sketchup-meshes-(-skp-textures-to-UDK. ps: I was kidding about it being easy.

I have the same issue. It seems that the data you get via Add location is different from the data in Google Earth. In my case I even see a difference in the satellite footage. My guess is that, for some reason, the Add location dialog is using a completely different (older?) dataset than GE itself...

Hi quantj I spent a lot of time talking to Google Earths tech team about this and it wasnt solveable unfortunately. They werent planning on making any new features for it either so I had to make it manually in the end.

@kaas said: Just did a quick google search and maybe you should try: In SketchUp, import the Geo Location you are interested in. Then go to Window---->Components. Click the pulldown menu to the left of the search bar. Choose "nearby models". A list of available buildings near your location will appear. Click on any to import to your model file in SketchUp. Thanks for tip. It seems the resolution is so bad as to be unusable. is there a way to get beyond default resolution? Also, only one building to import. Dang...
