after 'upload attachment' and 'add file' there's are further options to add a comment and to 'place inline'... A lot of people miss this step, but I think it's a better 'User Experience'... john

You can't get imagery and terrain from Google Earth anymore. It comes from Google Maps now. It has done since SU2014. The geo-location feature in SU2013 and earlier no long works, either. This was announced more than a year ago and is described here. I addition, you can no longer directly send SketchUp files directly to your local Google Earth and Google isn't accepting SketchUp models for populating Google Earth. Your profile is incomplete and doesn't indicate what version of SketchUp you are using but your screen shot came from a version of SketchUp earlier than SU2014.

Matt, What is your experience, training, education? With CAD software just about anyone can create floor plans. But do you actually know what you are drawing? As a former Architectural Instructor and presently an Intern Architect and Architectural Designer I do work for both residential clients and architects who use my services for drafting and design to produce SD's, DD's & CD's. So asking where you can get floor plans to create houses to add to your portfolio, are you simply copying plans or actually building models from work you personally have created? Feel free to email me: will@globerds.net or call me - 724-914-5888 Will

Thank you to everyone. Check out the finished product. https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model.html?id=f044d1ee-6d43-461f-a16d-1f60ce57acd4 You can change the sizes in Component Options. Don't inspect too closely and it looks pretty darn good! Thanks again!

you have to use eraser tool+CTRL key. This softens+smooths edges instead of erasing them.

In the very end of things, I think SU should have a command to force making of a face among 4 or more points, even if it would have to create some hidden geometry - break it up to triangles, though I would prefer that it would force the 4 points into a coplanar position upon the user asking it to. Then, even with a non planar face, it should allow people to extrude out that face in some kind of user defined or automatically calculated direction (as a mean vector maybe of some geometry ending at those forced-coplanar points definig the face). All this to withing user defined tolerances, I think would work like a charm. As it is now, judging from the number of people running into this problem, it has people chasing their tails for no apparent gain due to perceived "good practices" in some programming paradigm.

@rich o brien said: Is it the viewport resolution or the print resolution? It's probably both, although I have not tried printing it. What I'm doing is importing maps into SketchUp that do not have a scale in place and creating a scale bar which I then export to Layout to put in annotations. It seems that other people have had problems with this issue and there is no solution. Importing the image directly into Layout turns out fine but importing the image into SketchUp and then exporting into Layout reduces the image quality. I will have to scale my images in Layout directly or in other software from now on. Thanks for your help Rich, I appreciate it. All my questions were answered.

What do you mean by "reformat" your skp file? If you want another file type, use File>Export. Or you may need to get an exporter extension. Look in the Extension Warehouse. Be aware that exporters for some file types only work in SketchUp Pro. Your profile indicates you are using SketchUp Make. That would be limiting.

Look at TIG's "extrusion tools" plugin. Note you may have to make the begining and end shapes into "Curves" by welding the parts together. If that end is single line. Break it to min. two parts and weld it back. With Extrude edges by rails, that setup will give you a shape that diminishes to a flat line.If you wanted it to remain curved-top throughout you have to consider an ending profile.

That is a great idea pbacot thanks will report back when I've tried it! EDIT: Ah, it appears that colour to alpha is for Gimp only not PS, in PS you have to use channels apparently. I'll try it in Gimp, at least I know now that I have to make the image transparent before I import it into SU!

SketchUp's tolerance is 1/1000" That's' pretty small for most use. But if you are making a small thing - say it's a tiny chamfer in woodworking, or a rounded-corner for 3dPrinting - then you'll run into issues. SketchUp can't create edges shorter than that - it simply takes their start and end points as being coincident, so it skips making them. A missing edge means a missing face that needed that edge. The work around has been discussed in many threads... I'd recommend that you make the 3d object as a component. The place a second instance to one side, and scale it x1000. Then do your small size work within an edit of that. There'll be no issues of tiny geometry. When you are done delete the x1000 version. When you look back at the original sized version the tiny geometry will be there. Tiny geometry can exist but it cannot be directly created !
