. another approach using FredoScale and ShapeBender which sort of mimics the 'flow' approach in moi or rhino. (the shape bender step takes a few minutes to process but it will complete so hang in there ) [image: kzFz_helixtorus2.jpg] -- draw the profile shape and push/pull it along the red axis to any length.. draw a straight line underneath the profile.. make a 1/4 circle path being sure that the 'arc' begins and ends at a midpoint of a segment.. 2)-- use FredoScale's twisting option to twist the shape 180º 3)-- use ShapeBender to apply the shape to the 1/4 circle 4)-- copy/rotate to form a circle.

If you are looking to create terrain to model on, you can turn on your sandbox plugin, draw some quick topo lines (even better if you can get topo lines from an existing map/gis website) and then simply hit the 'from topo lines' tool in the sandbox tool kit and whalla you've got your site topography to model your deck, patio, & landscaping on. Sometimes I prefer to model the landscaping (paths, walls, etc.) in a plan view, then elevate the lines directly over the sandbox topography and use the drape tool to place the lines I need on the generated slope. Lots of tutorials I'm sure on how to use the sandbox tools.

the plugins are great but don't get in the habit of relying on plugins to fix sloppy modeling.

This probably wouldn't be quick, however if you're interested in modelling traffic paraphernalia to detail out your scene I've found most D.O.T. sites have a raft of standard details in CAD format for gantries, crash barriers, lamps etc. http://www.dot.state.tx.us/business/standardplanfiles.htm Example: ftp://ftp.dot.state.tx.us/pub/txdot-info/cmd/cserve/standard/traffic/stds66.pdf

Material Broswer: Texture Size settings... Click the chain to toggle it from unbroken/broken. With an unbroken chain the edited sizes change in proportion, e.g. make one twice as big the other one changes to twice its size to match. With a broken chain you can change edit one size and the other size will remain as it is. Making the chain unbroken again will re-link them ,and once again they change in proportion; although at this point you may well have got two unequal sizes they will still be changing 'proportionally' - e.g. twice the size...

@adt2 said: Sometimes I start from scratch. Sometimes I start with an existing plan and trace. I'm mainly curious about setup; layers, groups, components, etc. Working in SU is so different than working in CAD that I want to make sure I'm not carrying over unnecessary baggage. for a start draw everything in layer 0. draw out the walls and make a group. push pull them up to the necessary height. fill in the floor area and group the geometry. use groups for most things, and use components for items that are repeated (doors, windows etc.). make layers according to how you want to control their visibility, so generally i would have walls on one layer, floors on another, funiture on another etc. quite similar to the way i work in cad. it'll take you a while to get your head round it. one of the big stumbling blocks for me right at the start was knowing that i would have to draw some lines twice (e.g. where floors met walls), which is something i would never do in cad.

BigHandD, I hope you don´t mind me using your post for the same reason you did- just to say "hi" to everybody on this forum My name is Jan and I come from Slovenia. I am a new user of the forum and have found about it just about ... 5 minutes ago I use sketchup mostly for architectural models and interiors, but currently it is my primary "weapon" for modeling my "diploma" model, which I hope will bi finished in about two months. So I will probably be a regular visitor here from now on Greetings, Jan

Hi Ben, hi folks. It may prove to be simpler to do it all using SketchUp. Doing this simple design might prove a good way to learn the software. In the following example, I used the default 24 segments for circles and ellipses and 12 segments for arcs. Using more may yield a better result. The completed figure comprise 1608 edges. Using something like 96 edges for the larger circles would set the count to 1896 which is not much. Even quadrupling everything from this value would yield 7584 edges (circles and ellipses with 384 segments and arcs with 48 segments). Maybe this would be OK for CNC machines. See this SU file for ideas. Ben.skp
