Error404 , the multiple lines usually has to do with how SU creates a wall as an example. It is not two lines, it is 8 (top, bottom & sides). If it has base, windows and trim, the number of lines grow. This process of going between both programs really doubles your workload, and as you mention, creates a disconnect in the process for both you and your client.

I did the same process in the past and it was very frustrating, especially with changes. Diving into LO really helped, once I figured out a great workflow. I haven't looked back. Two months ago, I finished record drawings on my last ACAD project. I don't think I will need to open that program again.

I can live with my workflow ๐Ÿ˜‰ (but I know it's not for everyone)

Our Schematic Design phase is long and is meant to nail down the design (This is where Sketchup becomes and excellent toole). We use Design Development as in between step to Construction Documents (put the design in hard lines / CAD). Changing the Design in CDs is cumbersome not matter what software you are using... So we make sure the client is 100% satisfied before we move forward.

I would be very interested in seeing a complete Architectural CD set from your work flow.

    • RE: LO DWG-export to ACAD, need help please

MY WORK-FLOW from Layout to AutoCAD

Once Schematic Design is done and the client agrees to move into Design Development I export my elevations and roof plan from skecthup

      IN LAYOUT:
I create a custom size paper in layout big enough to fit all my Elevations and roof plan in one sheet at 1/8" = 1'-0".(It doesn't matter the size of the paper actually, if your drawings are outside the paper space they still get exported just fine).

      Make all the views Vectors.

I export them as DWG with Output Space set to "Model Space" Scale: "Custom = 96"
(If your views are at another scale, you will need to figure out what would your custom scale be.... example 1/4" scale = 48, 1/16" scale =192.... you get the idea).

      IN AUTOCAD:

As soon as I open the drawing, I can't see anything! (that is because my default background color in autoCAD is black). I also don't care about Layout's layer system, because I'm planing to redo them in AutoCAD anyway and add all the required details. All I want is the basic shape to get started.

So, I make a line on layer 0 and use the command "MATCHPROP" (also known as "MA") select the line that I just made and then select the whole drawing! All of the sudden all the black lines become white and I can see them ๐ŸŽ‰

Unfortunately (and I don't know why) There are many repeated lines on top of each other. Maybe they were in different layers and now they all are in layer 0... I don't know and I don't really care. To take care of this issue, I select everything and use my favorite command in AutoCAD: "overkill".

After that, the model is pretty much ready for one of my drafters/designers to take over. I write in Defpoints notes of things to watch-out and a warning that my exported elevation is for reference purpose only to verify everything

If for some reason the client goes crazy and wants to change things and see them on sketchup... then it's going to cost them extra ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Default sides for circles and arches

Does anyone know how to change the default sides (segments) on circles and arches?

I know, that once I click on the arch icon I can type the # of segments that I want and it will maintain that setting until I close the model (or by using the entity info if the arch has been created already). What I want to do is have as a default 24 segments in my arches as soon as I open sketchup (instead of 12).

      Thanks!

      @thomthom said:

I see no change with glued or cut hole components. Maybe you can share a sample model?

In general though, if I know I want to create a cut hole component I draw the profile of the hole on a face and select it with the edges and immediately create a cut hole component out of it before I model any more to it.

It could be something on how the geometry is that makes the different options in Make Component not be selected.

This is exactly how I do my glue/cut components,

I draw a rectangle on a surface, double click the inside of the rectangle(this should select the rectangle and the edges "only"... if you triple click it you went too far ๐Ÿ˜† ), then right click it-> "create component" make sure cut opening and replace selection with component are checked, and press okay....

After that, I double click the component and erase the rectangle but leave the edges.

As long as the edges are in a closed loop and are not inside a group/component they will cut the opening.

If it's a door or a component that might be touching the edge of the surface that I'm about to cut, I just move it a couple of inches off the edge before creating the component.

It sound more complicated than what it's. With practice, it's just a couple of secs. ๐Ÿ˜„

    • Does this plugin exist? (select and hide only the lines)

Let's say I have an object that I want to hide the lines (without hidding the faces)...

My only option is to select each line individualy and hit hide. Any other ideas?

Soften edgesor making a custom style are not an option.

I want crisp 90* angles (but no lines) so soften edges is not an option. I also want the rest of the model to show lines... so a custom style is not an option either.

    • What is wrong with this component?

I made this dynamic component: handrails with an element/design centered.

As you stretch the component, the element stays in the center and more balusters are added. The distance between balusters varies depending on the total length of the component, but it's meant to never exceed a distance that would allow a 4" diameter object to pass thru. (The center design is no code compliant, but that is an easy fix ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

My issue is that when I place it in my model, it goes to 0,0,0 instead of allowing me to specify where I want to put it.

      Has anyone experienced something similar?

    • Help me get acquainted with Layout (few easy questions)

Here is the deal, we have a project (existing building) that requies elevations and the company that I'm working with doesn't want to spend the time drafting the existing elevations in AutoCAD.

However, I already created a Sketchup Model that has enough details to work as existing elevations.

I opened up Layout for the first time, and got stuck right away as I didn't find a way to import a .dwg title block.

I was planning to do the entire page in Layout, but now I'm wondering how the export feature works... perhaps I could bring it as lines in AutoCAD and finish it there.

Q1- How do you guys bring autocad blocks (like a title block) into layout? do you re-draft it?

Q2- Can you export the layout views as 2D dwg lines? (I don't have layout in front of me so I can't check the export features)

      Thanks

First... I'm not 100% familiar with all the plugins that are available ๐Ÿ˜„ I'll look for TextureTools.

Without any type of plugin... the only way that I know how to rotate a texture 90* would be

Right click on a plane - Texture - Position - the grab the green circle and rotate the texture, then align it until it snaps into the correct scale. It's not complicated, but if you have to do it for a few objects... it becomes tiresome. I wanted a 1 click solution

Well, this isn't a single click option but it you right click on a texture, you can choose Texture>Position. Then right click again and choose to rotate 90, 180 or 270ยฐ or flip the texture. If you uncheck Fixed Pins, you can then move the pins independently to tweak the texture's dimensions/shape.

And if you have several different faces to do, adjust the texture on one and then use that texture to sample from when applying the material to the other faces.

All native tools. No plugins required. Use TIG's plugin for the rest.

      thanks a lot!

      Another silly question...
is there a way to import scenes (camera locations) from one skecthup file to another one?
