It is actually very simple - the Nature just can't cope with our consumption anymore. There is no more balance, no time to recover. And we are trying to solve the problem with ..."green" consumption! Ironically, the Nature just gave us a sign - the Coronavirus forces us to restrict our consumption in many ways!

"Satellite images have shown a dramatic decline in pollution levels over China, which is "at least partly" due to an economic slowdown prompted by the coronavirus, US space agency Nasa says."

The real power of the subscription (for the developer) is when you stop paying, you are left with nothing! That is the whole point - you have to pay to use your files! They want a full control - the software and your files on the cloud and on subscription! And this is just the beginning! With IoT all your stuff will be on subscription!

Do you think $49/year is expensive?

Compare to what? Where is the perpetual licence and upgrade price? See - we don't have a choice!
With more than 20 years as a CAD user I can tell you BUYING is my insurance to survive when things go bad - I can't afford subscription in my part of the world!

We do not want to tell users they can not read SolidWorks 2020 files for example because the license they have is for an old version.

But we have SolidWorks 2018 and you tell me to pay for reading 2020 files! But I agree - it is easy for You! I'm frightening how all software vendors are so worried abut me and want to decide what I need - and they always decide I need constant subscription and endless updates!

It all depends of course how long they will keep the classic license.

I would give it 2 years based on what I'm seeing compared to what happened with Autodesk. This seems to be playing out closer to that than Adobe. If you didn't go through the Adobe & Autodesk subscription transitions this is the basic playbook:

      1. Decide to push your customer base to a subscription model to increase and guarantee revenue.
      2. Bundle your "flagship" product with other low selling or low cost apps/ services to increase perceived value.
      3. Price your new subscription offering at half the perpetual license cost to offer easy entry but higher returning revenues past 3-4 years ownership vs. perpetual licensing.
      4. Convert software development to a rolling release model. No need for major updates unless there is a disruptive competitor in the market.
      5. Market your perpetual license customers to get them to switch over to subscription with "special one-time" offers to convert.
      6. Make owning perpetual licenses progressively more expensive/difficult and keep any substantial new features as subscription only. Do not reveal any future plans for perpetual licenses. Rely on FUD to move them over.
      7. After about two years or so cancel perpetual licenses to force the remaining hold-outs to subscription. Grandfather special subscription rates on on former perpetual licenses and then increase costs until there is no difference anymore.

      Adobe is done.
      Autodesk is on step 7.
Trimble is on step 4. Step 5 has already been mentioned over on the official form as a "customer loyalty" program.

Spot on! Couldn't say it better!

These are big, heartless corporations! There is no passion anymore, no craftsmanship! The suits are not identified with their products - they see reports, budgets, expenses, balances! Look around You - under the hood everything is the same - just different label and logo! Traditions are gone, people are just employees from 8 to 5 PM, most even don't know the final product! The founders are gone - and with them the soul of the creators!

Stick a form in it folks, SU (at least on the desktop) is done. Whether there is a
"new" cloud based product or not is up to Trimble -- and they're not telling, which usually means really bad news for the current product offering.

I wouldn't necessarily say the desktop version, but it certainly looks like they have set their sights on eliminating the perpetual licencing model. I sincerely hope that the perpetual licence with maintenance and support model is retained, even if it is alongside another licencing model.

Cloud and subscription are perfect fit for INVESTORS and Shareholders! Because there is nothing to buy, download and install the only option is to rent. Software as a service - only way to pay for the same shit over and over again!

We know the future, even we try to fool ourself πŸ˜• SketchUP WEB -> Subscription Only -> Sketchup WEB Pro. Imagine the future where everything is on subscription only! The big corporations own everything and we are just subscribers! And all this push to the cloud is in line with this strategy - take full control over the tools and the data!

      Thanks for posting Rich.

This is one that I've been keeping an eye on since it was first announced in the fall. Will be interesting to see how it compares to SU in capability, workflow integration and ease-of-use. If nothing else, it will be good for SU to have some additional competition in the AEC space.

Curious to check it out once my current deadline crunch clears.

It is better to compare as a part of BricsCAD BIM. It is not intended to be used from start to finish like SU.
